Took DD to Dr. because of a sore throat, she has strep. The Dr. also said that her thyroid is really enlarged and that she needs to have a thyroid profile and a scan. Does anyone know if thyroid problems are common in children? (shes 9) Will this affect her growth? I know these are questions for the dr. just could not think at the time so while I wait for results just thought I'd ask if anyone had any info. Thanks!

I'm no expert, but I think I remember reading that over-active thyroids (enlarged thyroids) are easily treatable. I hope this is the case for your DD! I don't think there's a correlation to growth, although there is a connection to weight gain and loss. People with overactive thyroids are often quite thin.

Pixie dust your way!

My neice has this, she has had it since she was a child. She is 18 now and she has taken medicine for it for years. She is normal sized. She was a little heavy, and when she started taking the medication she lost alot of weight, they had to adjust(sp?) the dosage. She gained some of the weight back and is normal sized now.

Best wishes for your DD, Trish. If a thyroid condition, most are so very treatable, she would do great. I take a pill a day for an underactive one, works fine. My best.
