I’m struggling to understand how to file my adult child’s taxes and thought someone on here might have insight. She did the dcp from Jan to early Aug in 2024. Does she need to file taxes for FL even though that is not her home state? I’m also not sure if she’s still a dependent because of her earnings, living status - she’s been living with me since the program but most of the year was in FL - and part time student status upon arriving home. She turned 19 halfway through the year and it’s my understanding that she is a dependent under 19 without the student status but I might be getting this wrong. Thanks for any help.

FL doesn't have state income tax, so there shouldn't be anything she needs to file in FL.

For the college program , they keep their home residency. Depending upon your state the CP may owe taxes to their home state. We live in MA and my husband made a couple estimated state tax payments for my CP during the year since Disney only takes out federal tax and social security taxes

Our daughter did the DCP from 1/8/24-1/9/25, so we are unable to claim her as a dependent this year as we didn't pay half her expenses.

My understanding is that you are responsible for taxes in the state where you are a legal resident. If her drivers license, plates, voter registration, permanent residence, etc. has been in the state where you live, then she was never a true resident of Florida and therefore could owe taxes to their home state. DCP is considered a temporary internship and it's the same as if they were college students.

As far as claiming her as a dependent goes, it does not sound like you can because she's not a full time student and she supported herself.

Neighboring states often have a reciprocal agreement allowing taxes to be withheld/paid at the home state rate instead of the employment state rate. If no reciprocal agreement, taxes can be withheld in the employment state and credit taken for that amount in the home state; a return would need to be filed in both states.

However, based on posts above, it sounds like FL does not have a state income tax so presumably nothing was withheld. Assuming the employee is filing taxes in her home state the FL income is also taxable at home and she likely will owe since nothing was withheld in FL.
