So it's been said that the test cruises will be done with volunteers that will be made up of Disney cast members but in my opinion that really isn't a test of how real passengers would act on a cruise with new restrictions. The cast members are employees and will comply with whatever DCL tells them. Am I missing something?

It is completely okay within the CDC technical guidance for the voyage.

Legally, Disney simply cannot require any employees to do the test cruise as a condition of ongoing employment.

I am a CM and willing to do whatever DCL would need me to do... with that being said if it was Carnival, RC, Norwegian, ect I would also do the same for them too... the only way the cruise lines can get up and running is that people doing these test cruises behave correctly and follow the guidelines... anyone that don’t want to comply shouldn’t agree to go... they should not be selfish and just wait until the cruise lines get back to the point that the rules are something they can comply with... so with that being said this could include non CM and I would hope the testers, CM or not, wouldn’t ruin this for the rest of us because I am beyond ready to get back on the high seas 🤗

Honestly, whatever gets things moving the quickest. If it’s faster to use CMs as volunteers vs. some kind of general-public lottery, I’m all for it.

Any volunteer system for these is likely to feature high compliance people. It is self selecting in that way even outside of employment relationships.

It's just a checkbox by the CDC that they are agreeing to do.

If you think having 1/2/3/4/5 cruises without issue means something it really doesn't. All of the important stuff is simulated and written down policy. Things like how to quarantine, how to lockdown, how to contact trace, how to deal with guest not complying, and how to offload upon outbreak.

I agree. If they were to allow guests to participate, they would likely be seasoned cruisers that understand how cruises work and would show the same level of discipline as CMs, especially since only adults can participate.

I would agree about a high compliance for non-cast member passengers but not 100% which is what it would be close to if cast members acted as passengers. Wouldn't they want that percentage of passengers that were not compliant to test out the what ifs of their written procedures in a real world scenario.? Maybe it is just to check off the boxes for the CDC and not really a true test as sethschroeder posted.

Conversely, it is easier to direct employees into necessary roleplay to practice processes. If you hand them a script you have more back evidence that they can follow it.

Can you imagine the indignant outrage that would be on display if DCL only drew volunteers from people who have a lot of money to spend on multiple cruises?

If I were in charge of DCL (and I should be), I would bypass that entire PR headache and stick with employees for my volunteers.

They want to check the safeguards, not the passengers, to see if they work. As for when real passengers get on board, those who don't comply could be confined to their stateroom, put in the brig, or put off the ship at the next port.

FWIW, this is straight out of the tech guidance. I actually feel it will be better controlled with volunteer employees, since if employees end up positive it is less easy to hide than if Jane I Want To Cruise No Matter What goes home and blows a positive.

To facilitate contact tracing, the cruise ship operator must advise all volunteer passengers to notify the cruise ship operator if they develop symptoms of COVID-19 or are diagnosed with COVID-19 with any SARS-CoV-2 viral test within 14 days after the voyage. Passengers who develop symptoms within 14 days should be advised to be tested. The cruise ship operator must in turn report aggregate results to CDC in the after-action report or through an amended after-action report.
