DCL reducing deposits to 10% of the cruise fare on new reservations

If having a casino is super important then you aren’t looking at a Disney cruise. Although I would be more than happy if they converted those high price jewelry stores that I never see anyone in to some slots. But they must pay a good penny to have that much real estate onboard.

I know, the lack of a casino was a positive on Disney for us. But I am flabbergasted on other lines how big a part the casino plays in some people's cruise. People planning to gamble enough to earn another cruise......thousands of dollars. A not really free cruise. But I am in California, where the number of Indian Casinos have exploded. Gambling is no longer a trip out of state, it is a 20 minute drive.

People make a big deal about Casinos or lack of Casinos on DCL. I could care less what people do with their money. The Casinos on Royal have had zero affect on my cruise. I don't go in them. I also don't play bingo on DCL. I'm sure there are people spending thousands on DCL Bingo. Bingo on DCL is a big thing and it's also gambling.

I'm not against gambling I'm just super unlucky. We had a drawing at work last week 4 prizes and only 8 participants and I still didn't win. LOL.

The placement of the smoking portion of the casinos as corridors to other public areas with no way around is something I wish was different though. But what do I know, I wish they would put less emphasis on specialty dining, and make the MDR their best food again. But again, profit is the deciding factor there.

I would have two issues with adding a casino to DCL- I don't want to lose any of the current public space to have one built and I hate how much the smoke smell travels. DCL's smoking areas are all outside and it does make a huge difference. As far as gambling, if people want to more power to them. I always joke DCL could make a fortune to allow betting on the Jack Jack Diaper Dash

I've never had that problem, but I do my research when picking a ship. I have not found a ship yet that didn't have a you tube walk through video done by somebody.

We want the pirate night buffet back. And we want old Disney movies in the theaters. All of their new movies are unwatchable. We just offered our two college aged kids a 7 night treasure cruise and they told us no thanks! Can you imagine?! I’d never say no to a cruise. When we asked why they said no, they said we’re mad at Disney for ruining marvel and Star Wars. And we hate that they never brought back the pirate buffet. Free marketing research, Disney! These kids are both high performers headed to jobs making a lot. These are Disney kids. These are your future customers walking away.

A future cruise certificate. When you are on a cruise you have the opportunity to purchase a “placeholder” for $250. It gives a 10% discount off a future cruise within 24 months, and for longer cruises only half deposit will be required.

You can get the placeholder on the DCL app while on the ship. If you don’t use it in your 2 year window, they return the $250 to you. You can book your placeholder cruise online before you had to call in to use it.

I see both sides of the coin, but a 10 percent deposit does increase the chance of me booking a cruise sooner. Sometimes that 20 percent is more than I have ready to outlay.

But really it's the airfare side of the equation that keeps me from pulling the trigger most of the time. Doesn't matter how good the pricing is on a cruise from florida if I'm paying through the nose in airfare. (fingers crossed there's an NYC season in 2026)

The pirate night buffet caused a ton of food waste. I get why DCL got rid of it.

Also, I’m not sure how Disney ruined marvel films. I agree that the last Star Wars trilogy could’ve been written better, but I feel that way about the entire Star Wars saga. However, have you seen the second season of Andor? That might be the best Star Wars writing ever.

On the flipside, I have a 23 yo DD who is a recent college grad who would never turned on a seven night DCL trip, except for trying to make the timing work (she’s doing research as an assistant, and is going to grad school). Her roommate and friends would also jump on an offer of a Treasure cruise.

The treasure is also kind of a love letter to the parks in particular. Skipper Cantina, haunted mansion bar even the periscope pub brings back 20,000 leagues under the sea. I could see the idea of they don’t like Marvel not wanting to sail the Destiny, but the Treasure is heavily focused on Aladdin and even for the newer films like Coco and Moana they are some of Disney’s best movies.

Would your kids be interested in sailing on one of the classic ships like the dream or fantasy? If not, it might just be that they don’t like Disney cruises and that’s fine.

Our two sons - both 20 something jumped at the chance to go on the treasure. We gave them the option of the Treasure or the 10 night on the Magic. Both picked the Treasure. They also love that it’s a free vacation - then they can use their own money for another vacation to their liking.

Our kids are both already in the work force and make very good money - especially the older one (manager at a big 4 accounting firm). Neither care for Star Wars, old Disney movies or late night buffets. Both would take their families on a Disney cruise when the time comes.
