DCL perks?

We sailed DCL for the first time as DVC members in Feb (7th time overall), and we received several nice gifts throughout the trip. There were magnets on our stateroom door, welcoming us home; a "Captain's log" which was a very nice hardbound log book with places to write memories, places to put keepsakes, some information and some lanyards tucked away in the pocket in the back. We also had a reception/talk for DVC members with some food and contests and prizes. They also had an incredible incentive going on to buy more points that I wish I could have taken advantage of. Oh we also got pins and hats. I can't remember what else. But it was all very nice.

Are you required to be traveling on points for perks. We have a cruise scheduled May 2009 for 9 people and are paying cash as the point requirements would drain all our points for the next couple of years.

Nope, you don't need to be cruising on points to get the goodies. We cruised last Nov. on a cash ressie and we received all the stuff the previous poster described. It was a cool surprise!

I had a question regarding using points to book a cruise. Are you limited to "only" use 3 years worth like normal DVC stays? (I wanted to still have small normal vacations around a cruise year but the typical 3 year window limits that) And yes, I realize a cruise on points it is not the most perfect value, but then neither is trading in your car to the dealer, or having a realtor sell your house...
I see that you can "bank" next years points into the following year's points and you seem to be able to reserve a cruise up to 24 months out.

How does DCL know one is a DVC member? Does one have to put it on their reservation, or do they somehow "just know"?

Somehow they just know. DH and I cruised last Sept. on a cash ressie. I didn't mention DVC when we made the reservation. We got all the fun stuff in our room and the hats and pins! It was a fun surprise!

Did you book directly with DCL or an agent? We booked thru Dreams Unlimited.

We booked directly through DCL but we didn't use points and also never mentioned that we were DVC members (actually when we first booked the cruise we weren't even DVC members, yet!)

I chalked it up to pixie dust, but I'm sure there's a more thorough explanation somewhere! :wizard:
