We are on the Norway / Iceland sailing which involves 4 different currencies - Danish Krone, Icelandic Krona, Norwegian Krone, and British Pounds. I was worried about this exact same thing. I didn't want to spend our valuable time searching out and standing in line for an ATM at each port to purchase small things at places that might not take US $. We have one tour guide in London that wants to be paid in cash, so I was going to have to get pounds anyway, so I went to our bank yesterday and ordered a small amount of each of the four currencies. They said it would take about two weeks to come in and they charged me a $15 fee for each transaction. If we were doing a land based trip, I wouldn't worry about it for a second and just wait until we got there to hit an ATM. But with so few hours in each port, we wanted to maximize our touring time. I'm sure tour guides wouldn't bat an eye at the $$, because as noted above money is money, but it really was a simple thing to order the foreign currency ahead of time. I didn't get a lot, as I don't want to carry around a wad of cash, but it's a start at least! I'm not sure when you cruise leaves, but they told me it takes about 2 weeks to get the currency in. I'm sure it depends on your bank and where you live, though.
