My mom is going with us on a DCL cruise on the Disney Dream stopping in Nassau. My mom is not confined to a wheelchair but she does have some mobility issues -- she would actually prefer to probably be in a wheel chair for lengthy walking. I was trying to find an excursion for my mom and dad to do in Nassau but I noticed most of the descriptions listed a 15 minute stroll. There is no way my mom could make it.... Can anyone suggest an excursion in Nassau that is good for those who can't tolerate a lot of walking?

Any experiences are greatly appreciated! Also, tips for Castaway Cay for those who have mobility concerns would be appreciated!! Thanks!

I want my parents to have a great trip!!

We went on a cruise last year with another cruise line. There was not much someone who is handicapped can do. Nassua is not handicapped accessible. If they want to go over to Atlantis though I recommend renting a taxi as long as she is using a wheelchair. DO NOT under any circumstances take one of those water ferries. They are just barely sea worthy boats that they over load with people, then try and suck more money out of you by giving you some fake speil about the island.

She could see most of the Atlantis hotel in a wheelchair.

Hmmm.... that's not very encouraging -- but I'm happy to hear a realistic point of view. Thanks for the input. I'm hoping someone else will have experienced an excursion that is good for those who have mobility impairments.

Are you going to have a wheelchair for her on the ship? I haven't been on a DCL boat, but on many other cruises and sometimes the walks/waits can be pretty long.

If you have your own wheel chair you can get her off the boat, down the pier, through the port and into a cab (this would be true for most ports). Then you could carry on with any excursions you have planned.

HTH.

I'm interested in this too. This will be my MIL first time to the Bahamas and so she would like to see something. But with diminished lung capacity and other mobility issues (no stairs) she needs a trip very wheelchair accessible - either through DCL or outside. Anyone with any suggestions?

Is she okay just sitting in a car? Maybe one of the sight-seeing excursions. Should be room for a folded-up wheelchair in the tour-van. If she's using a scooter-don't know.
Castaway Cay-there are trams and there are sand wheelchairs.

I may be in a similar boat as your mother(no pun intended):rotfl:I don't require a w/c 24/7, but need one for travelling more than short distances.

On Castaway Cay you will have 2 choices for transport. The tram system requires you to walk to the tram stop (guessing the length of 2 football fields?) then walk to your favoured beach area at the other end. If she can't walk that far, then you would probably be better off arranging for one of the sand w/cs that they have. Not sure , but I think they can arrange for this on board at the guest relations desk. You could call the cruise line in advance to clarify this.

As for Nassau, to tell the truth, we didn't even get off the boat. Just enjoyed some lovely quiet time by the pool. You might want to check out the Disney Cruise Line threads elsewhere on the boards. There are usually some lengthy discussions about the pros and cons of visits in Nassau.

Hope you all have a great cruise!!pirate::cool2:

You might check out Cruisecritic.com and look on their boards for info for disabled people. I think that there may be companies that provide tours for people in wheelchairs.

Thanks, I have been to Nassau before so I probably will stay on the boat too (even though it's been 10 years doesn't look like much has changed :) ) but the in-laws haven't so they are planning to venture out. I heard some disappointments with some of the 'accessible' shore excursions at Nassau not being quite accessible so was looking for any experience.
Our problem is some days she can do stairs and other days not. So even taking 3 steps into a motocoach is iffy. Walking more than 50 feet is right out. We were thinking tours of some kind but was hoping someone had experience with any. I've been to a few islands in the Caribbean and they like to load up the taxi vans and tour buses to person capacity and not necessarily weight capacity :) (kind of like someone mentioned before on the ferry boats) So sometimes it gets a little crowded, may or may not have room to stow the wc, drivers take sharp turns so that we feel like back in the theme parks, etc.
I'm sure DCL screens their partners well so we were trusting the 'port adventures' list but any insight is appreciated. I guess I'll stroll over to the DCL boards and see if anyone has mentioned something accessible. Thanks. :flower3:
