The font for "California" looks a bit funner. :) but I sure wish they would just dump the whole California thing lol

Here's the problem I have with the logo, if you could call it a 'problem.'

To me the logo looks a bit more...whimsical...a bit more fun, if you will, than the last DCA logo, because the letters are slightly tilted and off-kilter. In fact, I keep looking at the letters in CALIFORNIA, expecting to see Goofy peeking out from somewhere because, in my mind, I associate semi-wacky letters with Goofy (just like Goofy's house in ToonTown is tilted and slightly off-kilter)!:rotfl2:

In any case, that style of lettering would be fine and dandy except for the fact that, in my opinion, I don't think it fits with the idea of where that particular park is headed. It looks a bit too modern - and like Goofy is going to be peeking out of the letters!!!:rotfl2: It doesn't fit with a 1920's Los Angeles theme! I would expect to see lettering that maybe looked a wee bit more old-fashioned to fit with the new theme of the park. Unlike Disneyland, which has very clear sections and themes dividing up the lands around it, the new and improved DCA as a concept (I thought) is supposed to be reimagined into what Walt might have seen when he first arrived in the '20s and made a bit more old-fashioned (like the Paradise Pier area is supposed to be more Victorian in theme, for example).

Also, I am not fond of the color of the letters. It's bland. If they are going to be in that whimsical style, I wish they were a more lively color or maybe make each letter a different color - to kind of emphasize the whole "color" theme that is being brought to light with World of Color, their big headlining show.

Just some thoughts....

Has it always been "Disney California Adventure?"

I thought it was "Disney's California Adventure."

It always has had the 's on it. Very interesting.

I like the whimsical-ness of it. If you see the video on the web site where this comes from, they have it with a rainbow of color and it's cool.

I like it. Interesting about the 's.

That is funny because those were my EXACT thoughts! Where is Goofy and how does that match with the new theme.

One thing is I think it has a much "younger" audience feel which I think they have been trying to steer DCA towards (even with the big rides). I seem to recall reading an article that talked about how WOC was designed for younger viewing audiences of Disney not really adults (not that the show isn't for adults just new Disney content). :)

I agree with you, Sherry E. I would expect a more "retro" - rather than whimsical - font to fit with that image.

Oh yay! That's so funny! I thought for sure I would post that and people would be saying 'What in the heck is she talking about?' I am so glad the same thoughts popped into other folks' minds too!

They should have stuck us all in a focus group and tested out the new logo on us, and we could have shared these exact thoughts: Where is Goofy, and how does this fit a 1920's Los Angeles theme?:rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:

See, I agree that it's more whimsical and fun but I also think that it does match what they're trying to do with the theming. I was thinking it looked like the lettering they had on the title screens of the old cartoons. I couldn't find a picture of a title screen but here's a link that shows a book cover with a similar style and notice that the characters are the same "pie eye" style characters they've been adding to DCA: http://thenostalgialeague.com/galleries/csjr15/mm_movie_stories.jpg

Not sure about the color though. Maybe red would have been better.

Interesting about the 's' being gone from the name. I thought for sure they were going to rename it Walt Disney's California Adventure since it's supposed to be about his adventure of first coming to California.

ETA: Ugg..... the link doesn't work. Well, if you google "old Mickey Mouse cartoons" it shows the image. Okay, here's a link to my search:

Yes, you know, I thought of that cartoonish style too, after I did that first post. I didn't look it up but I was imagining it.

I definitely would prefer more color in the logo. It's too bland that way. I thought 'Walt' would enter the name somewhere too. You never know - they may change it again closer to when all the changes have been made. They probably don't want to drastically change the name right away, if that is even a plan, so they may be doing it in gradual baby steps. First step is removing the pesky 'S.' Next step in a year or two, they could add on or remove something else.

I have mixed feelings about it. I really like the way it looks, just not as I pictured the direction of the renovation. I envision the classic Hollywood style with maybe a deco-ish look. I love the whimsical font, but it doesn't jibe with what I've read about what they're going for in the redesign (or perhaps I've just misinterpreted what I've read!). It looks cartoonish, which is appropriate for only some of what Disney is about and doesn't really cover the scope of Disney's work.

My first thought was that "california" was all shaken up like an earthquake hit it. Overall it leaves me feeling "meh"- don't really like or .dislike it

That's the kind of 'retro' I was thinking - maybe more old art deco rather than cartoon. Disney has cartoons covered, I think... but I guess that would be more in line with the whole Disney line.

Blech. I don't care for it, it's too cute-sy, and absolutely reminds me of Toon Town fonts. Nothing wrong with Toon Town but for California Adventure I too would have expected something more classic.

Like Sherry E, I instantly thought "Goofy!", not "California during the era when Walt Disney first arrived & made a name for himself".

When I saw the title of the thread, I was expecting to see a logo with something close to these fonts:

DecoFontsSM.jpg

To me, the Art Deco lettering makes me instantly think, "1920s/1930s Los Angeles/Hollywood". Like the lettering on the signs that are still in Union Station downtown. The font they chose makes me think "Toontown".

Agree 100%.

Also, there's no way I'm ever going to train my brain to drop the 's when I say (or think) DCA's name.
