DCA's logo gets a new look and slightly different name

I'm guessing they had focus groups for the new logo? Obviously they didn't have any die-hard Disney fans in them ;) I'm with most of y'all ... the new logo is just meh. I don't get it - it's nothing we haven't seen before (Goofy, ToonTown references are spot on!) and doesn't seem to go with any of the plans they've been promoting online and at the Blue Sky Cellar ... :confused3

I agree with Sherry! I looked at it and immediately thought of Goofy! I, personally am not feeling it!

I doubt they had focus groups if Disney works like most companies I've seen when it comes to logos (I used to be a graphic designer). This is what probably happened. The graphic designer (or designers) came up with a bunch of ideas for the logo. The art director probably selected the best ones and then showed them to some higher up manager person who hasn't got a clue about graphic design, art or anything. Then the manager picked his favorite (probably the least favorite one of the graphic designers) and told them the changes to make. The graphic designers make the changes, even though they can see that the logo is getting worse, not better. The logo probably went back and forth several times to "refine" it and untl the manager person (a.k.a the person who doesn't know anything about logos) finally likes it.

That's the experience I always had. The managers tend to think they know more about it than they really do and then they have the final word.

I'd love to see some of those fonts posted by spacemermaid used...they'd be better than that toontown font. Put me in the group that thinks the new Logo isn't that great. Maybe enough people will complain and they'll change it?

So THAT'S what happened! Because I was thinking, "Whoever picked this logo out has little to no experience in graphic design, as either a professional or even an aficionado!" :rotfl: Because the logo isn't UGLY, it just doesn't make sense in the context it'll be used in (ie: to represent an amusement park that's themed after the era in which Walt Disney arrived in California).

Here's the sign at Union Station I was thinking would make a great inspiration for the new logo:

unionstation.jpg

The sign is still extant (it's next to a walkway in front of Union Station), but it perfectly epitomizes the style of the era. Not cartoony, but still eyecatching, and classy all the way :thumbsup2

I see what everyone is saying about the font type being cartoonish. But that style is from the original Mickey mouse comic books of 1931. So it does fit in that aspect. For example look at the pie eyed Mickey on the wheel
of death. That is classic 1929 1930 Mickey :)
I am not crazy about the color it's so current "California" lol it would be better in a classic limited color pallete. :goodvibes
I do like they dropped the 's.
I read on micechat a post from mastergracey.
................
The new name, lacking the possesive 's, now implies that it's a Disney-themed California experience. With the infusion of Disney characters and stories throughout the park, this name change makes perfect sense.
..............
I like that explanation, it sounds more of a California flavored adventure. Not a replica or mock up of California. Which I did not like at all. :) I am sure there will be more changes ahead for DCA for sure it really has nowhere to go but up :wizard:

I know they advertised this as the new park logo, but maybe this is just a logo they are going to use for the World of Color introduction? Because obviously there are very few people who like it, and Disney wouldn't make a logo that majority of the public doesn't like; they're smarter than that.

I think it's funny how we have critiqued something like a logo change to the n-th degree. It's a logo. I happen to like it, but when other places of business change their logo, I have never really given it a second thought.

As for the " 's " -

It's Disneyland Park, not Disney's Disneyland Park, so I suppose it makes sense for it to be Disney California Adventure. Ultimately, we all call it DCA anyhoo, right?

For those who don't like the yellow, I have seen it in rainbow, so I would imagine we will see it in a variety of colors.

obviously design isn't your hobby or profession :). I could talk design all day. In fact I just did, as we just finished my DD's graduation party and many people wanted to discuss the design choices I made when building my house and putting in the yards!

LOL, actually graphic design IS half of what I do for a living.

I am VERY critical of something I create, but would never have thought a new Disney theme park logo would be such a huge discussion piece. Just found it interesting.

Disney Dreams - I got the impression from viewing that World of Color ad/commercial that the logo was only colorized for the sake of that commercial - to illustrate the 'color' theme. I could be wrong. Of course, we won't know for sure what the actual logo will look like until it makes its official debut.

In the meantime, we all have fun discussing, analyzing, speculating and critiquing all things Disney to the nth degree - that's part of why we come here! It's fun to go over all the details and ponder what may or may not happen and give our opinions. It's not brain surgery or rocket science. It's just fun!:goodvibes

Hmm, could be. I saw that as their plan to play with the coloring. It'll be interesting to see that they do with it long-term.

And I was enjoying doing the same, just like everyone else. I also found it interesting how much analysis one little logo can get.

:rotfl2:I think it was HydroGuy who once said that only here on the DIS can there be a long, involved discussion about the weather!!!:rotfl2::rotfl2: It's true - we DIS-ers like to discuss discuss discuss - even the weather!

Hey, I like to discuss the weather even outside of the DIS. I'm a midwesterner, we LOVE to talk about the weather! :rotfl2:

A log o is very important. Disneyland's is instantly recognizable. I don't like the new logo. It should be a 1930's art deco font. harrumph.

Oh yay! That's so funny! I thought for sure I would post that and people would be saying 'What in the heck is she talking about?' I am so glad the same thoughts popped into other folks' minds too!

They should have stuck us all in a focus group and tested out the new logo on us, and we could have shared these exact thoughts: Where is Goofy, and how does this fit a 1920's Los Angeles theme?:rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:

I agree also..I would have expected a more 1920's thing since that's the era they are building up the entrance and such to look like..the Trolley, etc..

I made this cause I was bored, obviously it's not perfect or anything, but I thought it was more of what Disney should have made the DCA logo, and I made the background all insane for WOC. I even left off the " 's " for added realism ;D
