For our late August trip we're planning on finding a hotel just outside DC on 95 (Ashland?) we figure around 200am after we depart Maine around 400pm the afternoon prior. Couple questions: 1) Any likely issues heading South around 1100 am on a Thursday and what's rush hour like 6 hours to our south?

Other suggestions welcome!

Ashland is not just outside DC, it is about an hour and a half south of DC just outside of Richmond. You will miss DC's rush hour and even if you decide to leave early from Ashland, Richmond's rush hour is avoidable by going around 295. I drive it often during rush hour and it is not bad at all, but I live in the DC area and am comparing it to that.

Can you recommend a place say closer to DC but still safe from traffic hell the next day when we head out around 1100 am. Looks like 10 hours to Ashland which is the target. We'll be left with 800 miles, figure we'd set a goal of 650 again for Thursday. We got two free nights at Marriot World Center from Grandpa to begin the official stay (4 at BWV followed by 2 at BCV)...

Anywhere south of Lorton, Va. There is construction on 95 at Lorton during the day so I would go south of there. There are plenty of hotels at exit 133, 130, and 126. All of which are Fredericksburg exits. Ashland is more around exit 98 or so. The Fredericksburg area has a larger selection to select from. The Woodbridge area around exit 160 to 152 also has a good selection of hotels.

Good luck on your venture.
