Looking for a clean updated hotel, convenient location to major sites in DC with a budget of less than $200 per night. Free breakfast and parking a bonus. Anyone??

We're staying at the Embassy Suites in Chevy Chase for just under $200 a night. Breakfast and evening reception included. Parking is $30 a day. Metro stop is right under the hotel and there are many restaurants and shops close by.

If your willing to ride the metro into the city a little ways look at Springfield va. They have some pretty decent hotels.

We stayed at the Marriott crystal gateway in Crystal city city last memorial day weekend. It was 99 a night w/ free breakfast on a AAA discount rate.

It really does depend on when you are going. That hotel had much higher rates on different dates.

We stayed at a Marriott Residence Inn a few blocks from the Metro. I'm not sure if/price on parking since we took Amtrak in but it was very nice and about $100/nt. It also came with free breakfast.

We stayed recently at the Comfort Inn Georgia Ave/DC Gateway which is in nearby Silver Springs. They charge $10 a night for parking but I couldn't find a single hotel that didn't charge for parking. They do have free breakfast but the dining area is very small. It was very economical and provided you're not expecting luxury its got about all you can ask for. Rooms are small, but you get free wifi, fridge, nice flat screen tv. Its around $99 a night.

They have a free shuttle they run to the train line that goes straight into DC (Red Line). The neighborhood its in is a bit industrial, not terribly scenic out those windows if you get my drift but we never felt unsafe and they've got a 24 hour front desk with buzzer entry and a security guard. During the day there are quite a few good restaurants very close by, in particular I'd recommend Ray's Steakhouse, Nando's Peri Peri Chicken and if you get out to Rockville there's a Korean BBQ thats kinda fun and open very late on weekends.

Hilton garden inn is great. Located on 14th and Kstreet (I think it's K, maybe I) it's within walking distance to a lot, offered free breakfast and I got a rate of 159/night before taxes. The only thing I don't think they have is free parking. They do have parking but I think there is a charge.

It has a pool (rather small) and a gabillion restaurants within walking distance.

It's my go-to family hotel if we go to dc.

We always stay at a Wyndham on M street, within walking distance to White House. Prices were always less than $200 a night and they had parking but it was not free (I think $15-20 a night). I just tried to search for the hotel and can't find it, maybe it is no longer there?

Last summer we stayed in Alexandria for one night on our way to Williamsburg. We chose Alexandria as we were going to visit Mount Vernon.

I used Hotwire to get a rate of $93 including all fees and taxes for one night at the Holiday Inn Express - Alexandria Fort Belvoir. This was during peak tourist season in August. The hotel was fine. It's on a bit of a honky-tonk roadway (Route 1 or 1A, I forget). The Metro is not in walking distance, but they do run a shuttle there and to King Street. Hotel was clean, had free parking and and a good free breakfast. They have an arrangement with the hotel next door to use their indoor pool. I had no complaints, but then I also didn't stay for long or visit any of the main DC attractions.

All of these suggestions are great but way over our budget during the week :(

Try Springfield or Alexandria, there are metro stops all over which is better than driving anyway. Plus, your less likely to have to pay for parking on top of your hotel room, then have to pay to park at whatever attraction you go visit.

Which would be the shortest distance into DC to see the sites, Springfield or Alexandria? Also, once we are in the city is everything within walking distance? White house, lincoln mem, smithsonians, etc. Never been to DC before.
Thanks

Alexandria is closer to DC than Springfield. Crystal City is closer to DC than Alexandria. If you want easy access to "tourist" DC, CC (which is also called South Arlington) and Alexandria are both good bets with lots of hotel and transportation options.

Downtown DC is very walkable for sightseeing, and also has a hop-on hop-off tourist bus that helps you cover more ground. The Metro (DC's subway) is also useful for getting from place to place.

How about Oxen Hill?

From what I see on the map, that hotel is pretty far away from downtown DC (it's what we call "outside the beltway", meaning that it is beyond the I-495 Loop that encircles DC). The reviews say that it has a shuttle to a nearby metro stop. You might want to get on the metro website (MetroOpensDoors.com) and see how long the ride is from there to downtown to get a sense of whether it is something you would be comfortable doing back and forth.

So if we stay in say Alexandria or Springfield, where can we drive to to get on a metro that will go straight to DC? This is so hard finding a decent place in our budget. We want our cake and to eat it too ;)
