Daytona beach questions

DH and I are heading to daytona beach for the Coke Zero 400 We have not been in 20 years so anything I might remember

We are staying at theTropical Winds hotel, I sure hope that it is nice! DH drives for a living and so we are hoping that we can get by without a rental car. We want to use the 5 days weare there to relax and enjoy the beach. I called and was told that there is going to be plenty of transportation back and forth to the track so I am not too worried about that but I do wonder if we can rely on taxis for meals. I also wonder how realistic it is to walk to area restaurants and cocktail lounges in that area.

Can anyone familiar with the area share some info about the area, maybe some restaurants and if we are just asking for trouble by not getting a car at the airport. We are flying into the Daytona beach Airport.

I just want to add, Dh has teased me about the DIS and my "make believe" friends here but after the help I have gotten when we have gone to NYC he is a believer. After I told him I would check here for help he relaxed

Congrats on your trip! There is a lot of fun stuff in Daytona! We go there a lot and even got married there! We have not stayed at Tropical Winds but it is on the right side of the street and the north end of the beach which is in the best area. You are within 2 miles of some awesome eating places. So good ones are Hog Heaven if you want BBQ (diagonally across from the Hilton), Bubba Gump's (at the Oceanwalk Shoppes), and your DH would probably love the Nascar Cafe on the corner of Main Street. Most of the close and good restaurants are down on the Main Street end of town from where you are. Be sure to check out the pier too!!

Do you know if relying on taxis or public transportation is realistic? We are looking forward to getting away together and having to places to be at any given time. SInce WDW and not having to drive anywhere we have gotten spoiled, I would love for DH to just be able to put the driving aside one more time.

DH drives a lowbed for a construction company and his day is filled with traffic and stress behind the wheel while hauling heavy equipment from job site to job site. My driving would make his stress level (and mine as well) go through the roof so that is out. It would be nice if we knew that transportation is easily accessible and convenient.

being I lived in DB and my ex still lives there, I have issues with even driving around that area! sorry, but I would not walk anywhere down there! When driving late at night..(club hours) I had these "women" that were walking and trying to pick me up! ( jumping out at my car) I am sorry to anyone who lives there, but I would be very careful in the beach area! It is not like disney at all!
