Hey everyone! So I just decided yesterday that we will take a day trip to St. Augustine... Sunday! We have been wanting to go there for about seven years and have not made it.

So I am in the initial phase of deciding what to do. Here are my family members. I am looking for ideas on what to do.

Me
DH
DS21
DS19
DS11
DD10

My husband likes to try new food (he watches all the food network shows) so trying to find a excellent restaurant is at the top of the list. It will only be a 2.5 hour drive from where we will be staying so I need to fill up just over half a days worth of things to do.

Any suggestions. I want to focus on site seeing historical areas, not the beach so much, although we may find our way there. We live an hour from the beach so that is not what is pulling us to visit.

I know there are a ton of things on the tourist websites, so looking for personal recommendations from people who have been. What is worth doing, what is not.

Thanks!

We had a really good time when we stopped there on our way to WDW once. It was not exactly on the way, but we took the time to go. There are alot of opportunities in St. Aug. We were impressed by the Flagler College architecture, the fort, and the Memorial Presbyterian Church. Old Town was good. There are a lot of "oldest" things in the city, oldest house, oldset school, oldest this, oldest that, etc. It should make a nice day trip. Have fun!

If you stay until dark you should do a ghost tour. Lot's of fun. They have a closed off street in the middle of town with many shops to check out. Unfortunately, the american tragedy museum closed down years ago :)

We just stopped in St Augustine for a couple of days before our cruise. We are also fans of the food network and like to eat good food.
This is what we did:
Pirate museum. My kids (9 and 7) loved it. Lots of interactive stuff. It is a small place, so it shouldn't take more than an hour of your time.
Next to it it's the Milltop Tavern that has an excellent roast beef sandwich.
We also went to the castle, walked St George St up and down to look at the different and interesting shops that they have there and took a carriage ride at night.
We had dinner at The Tasting Room which presents itself as a modern spanish tapas and wine place. Having lived in Spain for three years ourselves, I can say it was not your typical spanish food. But it was good food, imaginative and we enjoyed it. The wine was excellent. The kids have the chicken tenders which we all though were delicious.
On our second day we had breakfast at one cafe on st george st, but I can't remember the name. It was packed with locals, it wasn't expensive, had a great combination of pastries and hot breakfast items and espresso coffee (my one and only demand for breakfast :)). It was close to the cathedral it that helps in finding it. That day we went to the beach, but it was raining, so we soon came back to our hotel. We had dinner at the restaurant just across the street from our hotel, La Pentola. It's an italian place with a very expensive menu for the quality of the food to be honest. It was just your regular italian place with overcooked pasta and too-much pepper dishes. My husband is italian and he is an excellent cook, so we are very picky about our italian food and usually don't go to Italian restaurants, but it was the closest thing to where we were staying and it was pouring down hard.
On our last day we walked to Casa Monica for breakfast, only to find out that the cafe there was a starbucks. Go figure. So nothing unique to St. Augustine to report on that.
In all, we enjoyed our visit very much and think it's an excellent weekend getaway, and it worked perfectly for us driving down from NC to stop there before going down to port canaveral.

Checkout the Fort, really interesting, lots to see, Flagler college is also a very interesting tour, they say it's haunted. Pirate museum is cool for the kiddos.

We love to eat at Harry's great food.

I still have family in St. Aug. we love visiting there. Stroll through the historic (old towne) part of the city, check out Flagler campus. As others said its so beautiful, very Florida. And then check out the fort.

We ate at this place last time http://www.thefloridianstaug.com/ it's very southern, charming and everyone enjoyed what they had. Id definitely go back there for lunch. MMMMM fried green tomatoes.

YOu should consider eating at the Back 40 OR Conch House. Conch House is not great food but you cannot beat the atmosphere. Back 40 great food kitchy atmosphere.

We like to visit the Fountain of Youth - it's not too involved but has beautiful grounds, some archeological exhibits, a planetarium and you get to actually drink from the well that is said to have been the one Ponce Deleon discovered - nice way to spend a couple of hours. We also enjoyed just wandering the historic downtown streets - maybe a horse & buggy tour would be enjoyable for ya'll. Have a great day trip!

There are many different types of Ghost Tours available in St. Augustine: from Ghost Tram Tours to Ghost Drinking Tours to Ghost Walking Tours to Ghost Hearse Tours. Many to choose from. I've even heard that there is an overnight Old Jail Paranormal Tour.

The Lighthouse is a great, fun climb (if no one in your group is afraid of heights!)

The Alligator Farm is worth looking into as is the Historic Fort (near the Bridge of Lions.)

Best food and atmosphere for the money: the Columbia Restaurant on Hypolita Street. Since parking is at a premium in the Historic District, you can park for free (for 2 hours) behind the Columbia if you get a parking pass at the booth and have it stamped in the restaurant after your meal there. Try their awesome, award-winning "1905" Salad. Best salad dressing ever!

I didn't realize that there was a Columbia Restaurant in St. Augustine. We are only familiar with the original "oldest restaurant" location in Ybor. We live in Tampa. I will have to ask DH if he is interested since he has ate at the Ybor location several times.

The ghost tours sound interesting as we have done them in New Orleans and have another trip planned to New Orleans. We were not planning on being in St. Augustine after dark since we have to drive 2.5 hours back to where we are staying that weekend.

Follow-up here is what we did: (DS19 didn't want to take off work to come. Typical for him.)

Okay, so we left later than I wanted and the kids were hungry so we stopped at Cracker Barrel half way. :)

We arrived at 1:30 at the Red Train (Stop number 2) on San Marco across from the old jail. I bought 5 Red Train Tickets with my military ID (50% off) so it was $43.00. Got on the red train and then got off at St. George Street. These passes are good for three days. I didn't specify to give me the one day or three day tickets, but from what I just calculated I paid 50% off the one day prices and got three day tickets. I think this is pretty good; too bad we couldn't stay three days.

We walked up and down St. George Street just to check it out, noticed where the Columbia restaurant was. There were tons of places to eat but this is the only one we were familiar with and decided to come back later (didn't walk in to make a reservation at this time...didn't know we should/could have).

Then we walked across the street to the Castillo de San Marcos National Monument. Saw the sign saying military were free so I pulled out my military ID. SCORE HERE. The guy gave us an $80 pass that is a military annual pass to ALL National Parks (Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Everglades, etc.). So DH says we now have to go to the Grand Canyon. LoL. He has been before we met. I think the Everglades are somewhere we can go before this pass expires. We did get to watch the 2:30 cannon shooting. That was pretty interesting and the kids did like this.

We got back on the Red Train then got back off at the Old House. I love house tours and have done many of them in various cities. The guy gave us a deal as well for being military. We paid $18.00 for the give of us to have a guided tour. I don't want to say the tour was bad, but I was a bit disappointed. I thought we were going to get a tour of more than just one building. Total tour with all of the talking couldn't have been more than 30 minutes. I wouldn't do this tour again.

So then we waiting for the Red Train (holiday weekend) but two trains were too full for us, so they called headquarters and one of their "ghost trains" came to get us. We picked up at a few other stops, but when we got to Ripley's, there was a day train that they combined us with that wasn't full. So we made our way back to or starting point about 4:45 and drove back to St. George Street for dinner.

When we go to the Columbia restaurant, the guy in front of me said they had 6 adults, one baby. He was told to come back in an hour. So I said we had 5 and was told to come back in 1.5 hours. They do take your name and make the reservation. We walked around trying to find something to do (and trying to stay out of the boutique Shoppes). We went back at the one hour mark and they immediately sat us. Our waitress was nice but stressed over the busy holiday weekend. After we ordered our food, probably around 35 minutes later she came by saying it should be no more than 10-15 minutes. DH and I were not timing it but we probably got our food about an hour after we placed the order. The food was just "okay" nothing great or special. DH has ate at the original Columbia restaurant (in Ybor City) at office luncheon but said it has been a few years ago so he doesn't recall how he liked the food then. DH and I just added this to another restaurant we won't go back to mainly because the food took forever and it wasn't really anything to speak of and is overpriced. Our bill was $82.53 and some change not including the tip. They didn't have sweet tea so everyone had a coke, except me I had one glass of Sangria ($6.95)which wasn't close to the best Sangria I have ever had either, just pretty plain tasting.

DH finished his food as he always does. He is out running some errands for me, receipt says he got the Checking Salteado for $19.00 (I couldn't remember name of dish).

DS21 got a 1905 salad with turkey for 10.95. I told him only to get the half as he wasn't really hungry. He ate two bites. :-(

DS11 - his dad ordered him the black bean soup ($3.95 cup) to try. He didn't care for it; the other kids tried it and didn't care for it. I tried it and it was very bland.

DD10 and I shared "the Bambino" ($32.00) which is just a sirloin steak, potatoes, and stuffed mushrooms. Since DS11 didn't have any food, I actually gave him the majority of my share. At least he and DD ate everything I gave them off my plate. :rotfl2: I never finish my food by myself anyways.

After dinner we went back to the car (parked in front of the Castillo de San Marcos National Monument) and noticed the weather was quite nice for pictures, so we took a few more pictures before the rain started coming down. J Then we just jumped in the car to make the 2.5 drive back to where we were staying in Georgia.

We didn't even make it over the bridge to the lighthouse. Overall we should have gotten there a few hours earlier if we wanted to add the lighthouse or alligator farm. I don't think we will go back here anytime soon with the kids. I don't think the kids really enjoyed it that much to want to go back.

Our next day trip will be to Savannah, but DH is thinking that we won't take the kids with us there. Not sure if we will make it there before or trip to New Orleans (DD cheer competition). But we have been to New Orleans last year for the cheer competition, and several other trips prior. We enjoy New Orleans. I guess if St. Augustine had a Cafe du Monde, the kids might have enjoyed it more.

One major disappointment is I thought we would see more historical reference to St. Augustine as San Agustin. Just a personal gripe since my husband wanted to go with the traditional spelling for DS11. My FIL is Agustin, DH Augustine (nurses spelled this way and his parents didn't know they could fix it) and DS11 is Agustin. Everyone mispronounces his name! Thought it would have been cool for him to see his name spelled in the traditional form there. I didn't see it once.

Too late for the OP, but maybe helpful for future visitors. Here are my restaurant recommendations, based solely on my personal preferences... and 22+ years of enjoying their cuisine:

For Lunch

Café Alcazar (25 Granada St, Saint Augustine, FL 32084-4387) is a true hidden gem…and is definitely off the main tourist path. It is a small restaurant located in what was once the deep end of the world's largest indoor swimming pool, now the Lightener Museum building. The food is quite good (I love their curried chicken salad.) and the atmosphere is absolutely unique and very conducive to conversation. They don't take reservations and only serve lunch. If you have trouble finding them, you can phone them at 904-825-9948. Check out their Trip Advisor reviews: http://*******.com/5qlvrq

For Dinner

Old City House http://www.oldcityhouse.com/
Outstanding breakfasts and dinners. Located just steps away from the Casa Monica.

The Raintree http://www.raintreerestaurant.com/

The Reef http://www.thereefstaugustine.com/index.html?
The food is very good, and the ocean views are even better. Be sure to arrive before sunset (or for Sunday brunch) for best views. Request a window table when making your reservation.

Saltwater Cowboys
(My personal favorite for ambiance and value combined)
http://www.saltwatercowboys.com/

Gypsy Cab Co. http://www.gypsycab.com/

Creekside Dinery http://www.creeksidedinery.com/

Le Pavillion http://www.lepav.com/

Purple Olive http://www.purple-olive.com

Casa Maya
This tiny restaurant offers fresh, organic ingredients to make the most delicious Mayan dishes.

17 Hypolita St
St Augustine, FL 32084
(904) 217-3039

And, for a special treat...you should try Collage http://www.collagestaug.com/ It is strictly a special occasion restaurant, but if you like good service, warm & relaxing ambiance and a creative, eclectic menu, this restaurant is a wonderful experience. They do everything right!

Honorable mention

O'Steens
(Perhaps the best shrimp in town. ZERO ambiance, no reservations, reasonable prices)

You'll notice that I did not mention the Columbia restaurant. IMO, their food is good, but not as good as any of the other restaurants I have mentioned.

Also, it is somewhat of a tourist trap and one of about 6-8 other Columbia's around the state. This may qualify them as a chain restaurant. I know a lot of people eat there, but the other restaurants I have given you are all better.
