DAY ONE

We met our ABD guides, Kristin and Kelley, in the lobby before getting started for the day. They gave us a few sightseeing tips and a map. Both guides are from the US for this trip. Kelley suggested a visit to the Little Museum of Dublin if we wanted something a little quirky.

We used our ticket for the green Hop On Hop Off bus tour for the rest of the day. Our first stop of the day was to see the Oscar Wilde statue.

Next we headed to the Little Museum of Dublin.

They had some exhibits that you could touch and play with. DD had to get a picture with the gas mask being a Dr. Who fan. We caption this picture "Are you my mummy?" for those Dr. Who fans out there.

These unusual looking dolls would say different phrases (many of them a little rude IMO) when you squeezed them. DD thought they were hilarious.

Near one of the bus drop offs is the famous Molly Malone statue.

On to the wax museum after that. It chronicled some of the major events in Ireland’s history, fairytale characters, celebrities and popular movie/TV characters.

Our guides had told us that the tour of Dublin Castle that was supposed to take place tomorrow was cancelled due to political elections. Something else was now scheduled in its place. They said we could still take a look at the outer portions on our own today so we stopped there too.

Across the street was a cute little pastry shop called Queen of Tarts. We stopped to have a snack here.

Our next stop was Dublinia. This is a Viking museum located across the street from Christ Church Cathedral – the two buildings are actually connected by a walkway.

It was about 3:45pm by the time we got to the National Leprechaun Museum. Their next tour was sold out and the one after that wouldn’t give us enough time to get back in time for our welcome dinner so we didn’t get a chance to see this.

We took one last ride on the Hop On Hop Off green bus back to our hotel. I thought this bus worked really well as a mode of transportation around the city and we were able to see quite a bit in the time we had.

Here is the Wellington Monument. The Duke of Wellington was actually born in Ireland but apparently not proud of this fact as you'll probably hear from the local guide the next day.

We met in the lobby at 5:30pm and headed to the mezzanine for our welcome dinner. As with our Germany ABD there were 36 adventurers on this trip as well. This dinner was a buffet and, I will apologize in advance, since I did not keep good records of the food offerings. I do know that they accommodated a vegan and at least one food allergy issue. There was plenty to choose from. Our guides introduced us to Farley the sheep – he was the keeper of the pins. They asked the junior adventurers to keep an eye out during the trip for Farley’s brother as he had gotten lost. There were quite a few repeat ABD families on this trip. We could now say we were Adventure Insiders as it was our second trip. We got our ABD pin with the #2 on it.

DD and her Disney Duffy Bear in his leprechaun outfit.
