Just became DVC members in March and immediately tried booking at our home resort (AKV) for Dec 28 through Jan 3. We are currently waitlisted for AKV, so I wanted to plan a backup preferably for SSR. Called MS today to check the availability and was told that they had the 28th and 2nd available, but I had to call tomorrow (I forgot that the window was based on checkout date, not check-in date for each day).

MS told me the best option would be to call on Jan 3 and waitlist SSR, and/or several others for the 2BR stay.

Is this the best option? MS told me the day-by-day booking is good when the room is available, but not when waitlisting. My other option is to have my brother book using his SSR membership & transfer the points to him if it goes through.

Splitting the stay at multiple rooms and/or resorts is not a viable option as we will be bringing grandparents with us - which is the purpose of the entire trip. We're going in July, but I wanted to bring the grandparents so they could see their grandkids in Disney...

any advice?

I would wait until the 3rd and waitlist for the entire trip if you can't move mid-trip. However, my understanding is that the New Years Eve/New Years Day timeframe is almost impossible to get at the 7 month mark. MS told me that locals book those days and rarely cancel. I own SSR and thought about moving my Thanksgiving trip and called several weeks ago and there was no availability. Good luck though.

The problem with having your brother use his SSR points and pay him back with a transfer of your points is that he would be getting AKV points from you--that may or may not be an issue depending on if he is planning on using the eleven month window for a SSR booking. In effect the SSR points he loaned you would be paid back with AKV points.

We were waitlisted at BCV for the same time frame as your trip. We wanted a 2 bedroom and it came through about 2 weeks ago. I would waitlist where ever you are willing to stay. Since you are not willing to move I would wait until the end and add the waitlist. I would not give up hope yet, there is still plenty of time for the waitlist to come through.

I would call day by day and book anything you can and wait list for anything else also on a day by day basis. I'd also wait list for the other resorts but as one block for those though you won't be able to do that until 4 June. It's likely you will get the wait list if you take this approach. Remember as others wait lists fill or the natural cancellations that occur, those units will come available.
