Can someone please let me know how this works? I am still waiting on my membership number to arrive so I can sign on and explore the website. I have my passcode but no member number, so I haven't had any contact with MS yet. I understand the concept of day-by-day, but does it result in having to change rooms some nights? Do people feel this is the best way to get the room you want or do most people just book 11 months from their check-out date for thier entire reservation? I see the pros and cons to both, but just wanted more info and opinions. Thanks!

No change in rooms. You tell MS on day one that you are day by day booking. They will make a note on your reservation. The next day you call back, give the reservation number and add on the next night.

For most rooms at most times of the year it is unnecessary to do. We just did it for a Grand Villa at the BWV during Food and Wine next October. For some types of rooms and some times of year (New Year's Eve Standard view or Boardwalk view at BWV, Concierge at AKV looks like the newest tough reservation) it is necessary, but for the most part it's not.

Basically you call MS and tell them that you want to make a reservation (usually at your 11 month window if you wanted concierge etc.) and also advise them that you are planning to book add on additional days later. They will ask you what your estimated departure date is and write a note on your reservation # that you will be calling to add days to your current reservation #. When you have reserved your final night just remind them that this is your last day you need. Then MS will close your reservation # and start the paper work to be sent to you.

In Summary.....

You are given 1 res # and 1 room (you don't have to change rooms). They will keep the res # open until you confirm that you have finished booking the days that you want. Hope that helps. :goodvibes

I've done this many times - it's pretty easy. Hardest part is to remember to call each morning. :rotfl:

I like doing the day by day because it pretty much guarantee's me the room that I need/want. Right now I am doing day by day for a 1 bedroom congierge at AKV for the 2nd week in December. Since there are so few of them, I know that for the next 4 days I am going to have/want to be on the phone with MS right at 9am so that I can secure my reservation.

I am a consumate planner so I know a year in advance when we are going on vacation - I have that in my favor so that I can book right at the 11 month window.

I agree that we seem to be recommending booking day-by-day a bit too much. It's typically not necessary at then 11-month window except for certain hard-to-book reservations.

Day by day is extending the original reservation, not making separate reservations. So room changing does not happen unless for some reason the same type room is not available on all nights.

I agree that it is unnecessary for most reservations.

You mentioned the member website, there is nothing on this topic there. It's not something DVC publicizes.

It is something that the MS CM's will recommend to you to do though if you're looking for a tough reservation in a popular time of year. I just did day by day to get a 2 bedroom at VWL in early December. VWL is VERY popular at that time of year so I didn't want to risk being waitlisted for any part of my reservation.

It really is painless to do. About 5 minutes on the phone each day after the initial call. Peace of mind is worth that time to me.
