Cast of Adventurers

Me: Shelly Disney Nut and wanting to go back to WDW for 12 plus years.
DH: Warren Converted Disney Nut
DS: Brandon, Age 7 Being raised right (a Disney Nut)

Warren voted to sleep in, have a leisurely breakfast and then hit the theme parks. My idea was to be up at the crack of dawn and hit the ground running. We compromised and no one won. My internal clock woke me up early and so I was itching to be at it when the slugs, I mean men, finally woke up. Oh if I had only been issued a crystal ball, I would have required Brandon to have more rest. OK honey you were right, I was wrong, this will only happen once in our marriage so I hope you enjoy it.

The day started out innocently enough. We didn't have anything overly scheduled; our only plan was to revisit anything that we particularly liked. Roughly we planned to start at the Studios and do Tower of Terror and then head over to Epcot for Test Track and browse Innoventions. Then we planned to go back to Dixie Landing for a rest and swim, hit the early show of Tapestry of Nations and cruise over to Fantasmic. OK so we are ambitious travelers. I think it must be genetic. Sometime I'll have to tell you about the time my father showed us Washington, D.C. in one afternoon. Or the time that my brother, sister and I jogged the Navaho Loop trail at Bryce Canyon in less than 45 min. with no water. I was raised to travel fast.

So off we headed to start our day. Brandon spent some time with Baloo and we took in two rides on the Tower and managed to get a picture of our family. Warren looks absolutely terrified, but Brandon and I look like we were having a good time. Warren said he enjoyed it but if that is the case, then pictures lie. We then decided to head over to Epcot and asked a very nice cast member about where to get the bus. He pointed out that while we could travel by bus, the boat ride would be much nicer. That was our first glimpse of the Boardwalk and The Yacht and Beach Clubs. It was a soothing and relaxing ride and part of the reason we booked the Beach Club for our trip this fall.

After we landed we headed over to Test Track. We had fast passes from before when it had gotten rained out and so we hopped in line. Unfortunately the ride broke down and we were stuck. We could not back out of the line because of my ECV and Brandon was not very happy. We started with the empty threats, "Do you want to go back to the hotel? Well then shape up." Finally the ride started up again and we rode. Waiting in that line was a miserable experience for us and the other people around us.

Next we decided that perhaps we needed some food, so we wandered through the park trying to decided what we wanted. All of us were feeling punchy. Finally we decided on the Lotus Blossom Cafe. Now I had read in the Unofficial Guidebook that this was one place to avoid, but frankly everything else we had consumed was fine to excellent. I wish we had heeded the warning. The board of health needed to put out warning signs. Think of the worst Chinese meal you have ever eaten in a mall. This was ten times worse and about ten times more expensive. It did not help that Brandon had to be put on time out twice during the meal.

You would think that with Brandon's misbehavior that we would have read the cues and taken him back to the hotel for a rest. No, he had imbeciles for parents. OK maybe that is a bit harsh and we were just overly tired too. In his highly agitated state we decided with our immense brain power to take him to the "boredom to children zone" or as you might also know it, Innoventions. Ours was not the best behaved child in the building. In fact, he was probably the worst. We had switched (far too late I must say) from idle threats to time outs but face it; he was tired. He wasn't ill mannered, his parents were idiots. OK commando theme park, "I paid how much for this vacation and we're going to enjoy EVERY second of it" mom was an idiot. Of course even at that point it took not one, not two, not three but about four time outs before we realized that for everyone's sanity and health Brandon needed to rest. But did we have the sense to phrase it that way? Oh no, that would have been far too sensible for any of us.

Off we headed to the exit so we could catch our bus. Brandon threw a fit right by the big tombstone garden called "Leave a legacy." Oh we left one alright. Everyone who saw us will remember the legacy our family left that day. Brandon might be a small thing, but he can be loud when he wants to be. At the top of his lungs he screamed, "I want a new family." Now one part of me was looking around to see if he had any takers because I was seriously interested in a trade right then. I don't care how bad your child was acting, at that moment, mine was worse. As you might expect, no one stepped forward. Unfortunately, Brandon also decided to enact a parent's worst nightmare for any busy place.

Brandon said he was running away, jumped up and started darting and hiding in-between the pylons. We knew this was no idle threat as he has run away a couple of times before and this was NOT the place for him to do it again. We immediately launched into action. Warren went to the gate attendants to put them on alert and I kept a close watch on him without getting so close as to spook him into running. I kept telling him how much we loved him and wanted him with us. Finally after what felt like hours but was probably only minutes he calmed down and everyone said how much they loved everyone else and we sniveled our way to the bus.

Brandon, of course, fell asleep on the way back to Dixie Landings. It of course took an entire bottle of horse tranquilizers to calm me down. We tucked him into bed and did the laundry. He did not move the entire time. He woke up and we grabbed some dinner at the Cotton Mill. Because he had obviously been overtired and also because he had threatened to run away we told Brandon that he did not get to go back to any more theme parks. Taa daa it finally dawned on us that we were ALL tired.

We didn't want to hang around the room for the rest of the night so we hopped a bus to Downtown Disney. We looked in the World of Disney - what a huge store and we also made an appointment for the following morning to look into the Disney Vacation Club.

We lined up for the bus to take us back. About the only consistent complaint we had was that it seemed like Dixie Landings and Port Orleans did not have as good of bus service as the other resorts. That night was the worst. We saw every other resort get about 3 busses come before someone came out and made an announcement that they were bringing in some special busses for us. It didn't seem to make sense since Dixie Landings is one of largest properties on site. It may just be perception because it always seems like the bus that you're waiting for will never come, but it may also be true that the bus service for these two resorts just wasn't as good. I don't know.

At any rate, we finally made it back to our room where we sadly started packing. We were looking forward to our cruise but were sad that this part of our vacation was over. Dear, did we really buy that much stuff? Brandon sit on the suitcase while we try to zip it up.

Oh dear, What a day!

Funny coincidence though. Our family had a meltdown at Epcot too a few weeks ago. We stuck it out though, until the very end of Illuminations and to tell you the truth, the last few days of the trip were rather marred by it. It seemed to cast a bad feeling from then on. We probably should have taken a nap too.

My son and I both had a screaming meltdown in front of Magic Kingdom right before the Christmas Party in December. I actually screamed at him "You ungrateful brat-See if I ever take you on vacation again!" Sometimes you do forget your good judgement. Unfortunately, I think that scene was witnessed by everyone who has ever written and commented about stupid parents at Disney who wear their kids out and expect them to "enjoy" every minute of a Disney vacation. I hope my 7 year old doesn't remember it in the years to come!

My child also had a meltdown at Epcot last year, he was very tired as well and we just didn't want to quit. But when he finally calmed down we saw TON and it made us forget the whole episode.

Nice to know that we aren't alone. When you think about it, WDW probably is pretty overwhelming when you're little. Actually its overwhelming when you're big.

Oh my, what a day!

Not to worry, I mean, who HASN'T been there? As a matter of fact, I had a little meltdown of my own on my last trip when the guy at the Dole Whip stand told me they were closing and I couldn't join the line! My husband just gave me a look that said, WHAT is the matter with you? LOL!!

I'm sure tomorrow will be a fantastic day!

You must have been absolutely terrified when your son tried to run away. Glad everything turned out ok so quickly.

Luckily it wasn't your last day!

I'm with the others, who hasnt been there! Luckly mine are teens now and the worst thing they do is get mad and stomp off a few feet. See things do get better with age LOL

What a meltdown not all that unusual to see at WDW, but I imagine you have enjoyed better afternoons. It's amazing how exhausted you can get at WDW. On our trip in March, 2000 my 6 year old nephew asked if we couldn't just take him back to the room and get a babysitter  It's easy to be too commando, isn't it?

Still, you made me laugh more with this, thanks for taking the time to post it.

Sorry to hear about the meltdown episode at Epcot. Although I don't have kids yet, I'm sure that's what I get to look forward to when I bring them to WDW. Yay!

Sorry to hear about the meltdown, but it sounds like you still managed to have a good day afterall!
