Since me and any of the people on this board seem to be in the market for a new camera I thought I would pass along an little tidbit I read in the New York Times today. In David Pogue's latest "Pogue's Posts" column/blog he talks about what tech gear he actually uses, and in the camera category he has this to say:

Camera
I bought the amazing Canon S100, a tiny pocket camera with the biggest sensor on the market. I wrote about my reasons here. But in two weeks, I’ll be switching my allegiance. You cannot believe what’s about to come down the photographic pike. Trust me: If you’re in the market for a small camera with astonishing photographic results, hold off for a few weeks.

I am just a camera newbie, so this may be old news, but presumably he has had pre-release review model of something that looks promising. I think I will wait to see what he's talking about in a couple weeks. I thought it interesting enough news to pass it along to my fellow camera shoppers.

Sounds like the holy grail of cameras might be coming! :goodvibes

You'll have to post back what you find out in case no one else picks up on it. It could be quite helpful to people looking for a new camera.

This RX100 looks pretty interesting, I really want to see what DP Review and others say in their in-depth reviews. At this stage I am comparing it against the Sony Alpha NEX-C3 and the Canon G1X. My concern is both those could be too large to easily carry around all day...

I am also very interested to see if Canon has something coming out in the mirrorless space soon.

I was just browsing David Pogues twitter feed and in fact he has confirmed that the camera he said this about:
You cannot believe what’s about to come down the photographic pike. Trust me: If you’re in the market for a small camera with astonishing photographic results, hold off for a few weeks.

Is in fact the Sony RX100:

@willie Yes, the upcoming camera is the Sony RX100!

Awesome! I can't wait to see reviews on this camera. And hopefully comparisons to the Canon S100. It would be great to see more competition in this category of p&s.

It got a great review (preliminary) on DP Review which is my holy grail standard for camera reviews. However, IMHO, for what this guy costs, I just don't get why someone wouldn't go ahead and make the jump to the Nikon or Sony EVIL cams. It seems like a no brainer to me.

I don't get all the hype.

Yep. Everybody is waiting. A lot of people (including me) expected to see it announced when the T4i was announced a week or so ago. Didn't happen. The soothsayers are still saying before the end of the year, maybe as soon as Sept. All this proves it that obviously nobody knows. :rotfl2:

It better be special when it ships. Canon has missed a lot of opportunity in this space, IMHO, and we're already 2-4 generations of improvement into it for several major manufacturers. If Canon's intro doesn't knock EVERYBODY's socks off, they will never establish themselves in the space, IMO. If they have any sense, they will make it one of the first fully mount-compatible with thier current product line with specialty lenses available specifically designed for it. We already sorta saw that with the 40mm pancake they announced when they announced the T4i. If they do that, that just might be the ticket to giving them and edge nobody else has. We shall see. ;)

Should be fun to watch.
