David Letterman's confession tonight..

I hope he gets fired - most companies have policies against having relationships with subordinates.
How would that work? Does he fire himself from Worldwide Pants?

He apparently is under contract with CBS to continue the show for three more years so CBS isn't going to 'fire him'.

Edited to add that according to wiki, Worldwide Pants does not have a policy forbidding manager/employee relationships. Whether CBS' policies would need to be followed is questionable. Of course, CBS only requires a supervisor to notify HR about the relationship.

exactly ...according to Wikipedia (I know, I know) WWP has no rules about this and CBS simply requires that if you are involved in such a relationship that you report it to Human Resources. So, he may be quilty of not reporting this to HS - who knows.

he isn't going to fire himself and I doubt CBS would cancel a top rated show for this.

ETA: oops we posted at same time!:)

apparently, he was seeeing more than one at a time.

The more accurate term is: He's not monogamous.

Since there is a legal case involved, we will be hearing a lot about this for quite a while.

Yes, I was wondering last night if he could actually use the fact that his wife is not "very upset" with him and if they end up divorcing, to file a lawsuit against the blackmailer for damages, on the grounds that she never would have found out if Halderman hadn't forced Letterman into the admission. Letterman coming forward to publicly announce his marriage is now in trouble could be setting the stage for how much stress, duress, emotional damage to his family, to get more sympathy from the public and possible jurors.

It also doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that Letterman has not been 60 for the past 14 years. :rotfl: Stephanie is 35 and Letterman is 63. If she was 21 when this started, that would have made him 49. I find it funny that you reduced her age but his age stayed the same.

::yes::

George Clooney is 48. He tends to go out with 27-30 yr olds. I don't think they think it's disgusting. :p

Dave is actually gonna get quite a bit of mileage out of this, as he did with others who did the same. That's his job!!! He actually played off that last night and it was quite funny!:)

I don't think Letterman thought it was a problem since he OWNS his own production company. He even met his own wife there.

Julia Roberts married her camera man that she met on the set of one of her movies.

As for whether CBS thinks it will be a problem in the long run, The Late Show was at the top of the ratings last night:

Letterman's apologies bring big night in ratings

http://news.moneycentral.msn.com/ticker/article.aspx?Feed=AP&Date=20091006&ID=10452763&Symbol=GE

October 6, 2009 2:10 PM ET Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) - David Letterman's apologies to his wife and staff for having sex with co-workers meant another big night in the ratings for the late-night talk-show host.

The Nielsen Co.'s overnight measurement of the nation's 56 biggest markets netted Letterman's "Late Show" on CBS a 4.2 rating — higher than anything rival NBC had in prime-time.

Nielsen didn't immediately have an estimate Tuesday of the size of Letterman's audience. The overnight rating was slightly less than last Thursday's show, when 5.8 million people watched Letterman say he had been the victim of a $2 million blackmail threat that led him to reveal he had sex with staff members.

As Letterman mixed wisecracks with contrition on Monday's show, he said his wife, Regina Lasko, had been "horribly hurt by my behavior" and stated flat-out that those affairs "are in the past."

He vowed to repair his relationship with his wife, whom he married in March after a years-long courtship.

"Let me tell you folks, I got my work cut out for me," he said ruefully.

Monday's show was the first Letterman had taped since Thursday. While he laced the show with references to the scandal, only one other late-night host, Craig Ferguson, made any reference to it. Jay Leno, Jimmy Fallon and NBC's "Saturday Night Live" had all made jokes in earlier shows, but everyone but Ferguson avoided the topic on their Monday night and Tuesday morning shows.

As host of the "Late Late Show," Ferguson follows Letterman's "Late Show." Letterman also is his boss, since Letterman's production company, Worldwide Pants Inc., produces the "Late Late Show."

"The person you work for, the person you admire and respect, is caught in an embarrassing situation," said Ferguson. "And your job is to be funny about that, whilst trying to keep your own job."

"So this is my last show," he joked.

Ferguson did make light of the situation, joking that it had now been revealed how he got the job in the first place.

But Ferguson defended Letterman, calling him "the king of late-night television."

"If we are now holding late-night talk-show hosts to the same moral accountability as we hold politicians or clergymen, I'm out," said Ferguson. "I'm gone."

On the "Late Show," Letterman noted the cool fall weather, reporting, "It's chilly outside my house; chilly INSIDE my house."

Then he cautioned the audience, "This is only phase one of the scandal. Phase two: Next week I go on 'Oprah' and sob."

A bit later, guest Steve Martin gave Letterman his kidding consolation: "It proves that you're a human being. And we weren't really that sure before."

Martin Short, making an unannounced appearance, playfully plopped himself in Martin's lap.

"You spend one more minute on his lap, you're gonna get blackmailed," Letterman quipped.

During the hour, Letterman apologized to his staff, which, he said, had been subjected to "being browbeaten and humiliated" by reporters since his revelations.

"My thanks to the staff for, once again, putting up with something stupid I've gotten myself involved in," he said.

Letterman, 62, began dating Lasko in 1986, and they have a son, Harry, who was born in November 2003. All the affairs took place before Letterman's marriage, said Tom Keaney, spokesman for Letterman's production company.

Letterman arrived on stage Monday to applause and cheers from his studio audience. After drinking it in, he grinned sheepishly and inquired, with a mock stammer, "Did your, did your weekend just fly by?"

After pausing for the audience's sympathetic laughter, he went on: "I mean, I'll be honest with you folks — right now, I would give anything to be hiking on the Appalachian Trail."

"I got into the car this morning," he added, "and the navigation lady wasn't speaking to me. Ouch."

In a more somber display, Letterman voiced his mea culpas. Regarding his wife, he said that, "If you hurt a person and it's your responsibility, you try to fix it."

Letterman has offered no specifics about how many women he had sex with.

But the CBS producer accused of blackmailing Letterman used pages from a former assistant's diary that described an affair with the "Late Show" host, a law enforcement official said Monday. The ex-assistant, Stephanie Birkitt, went to live with CBS News producer Robert Halderman, who found her diary describing her relationship with Letterman and used it to help blackmail him, the law enforcement official said Monday on the condition of anonymity because the investigation was ongoing.

Halderman, a producer for the true-crime show "48 Hours Mystery," pleaded not guilty last week to extortion charges.

The flood of attention on Letterman was inevitable, and the way he initially dealt with this maelstrom recalled an embarrassing dilemma for another star in 1995.

For a celebrity the caliber of Hugh Grant, publicity — including speculation of career suicide — was unavoidable when he was arrested with a prostitute on Hollywood's Sunset Strip. But then he retreated to NBC's "The Tonight Show" to try to explain.

Host Jay Leno wasted no time before asking an instant classic of a question: "What the hell were you thinking?!"

Grant's appearance provided him with some needed image rehab. It also vaulted ratings runner-up "Tonight" past Letterman's "Late Show," a leadership position Leno held through his retirement from late night earlier this year.

Since then, Letterman has reclaimed a ratings edge over new "Tonight" host Conan O'Brien.

And now he may have truly sealed the deal. Beloved by viewers and critics for decades, he has abruptly freshened the enduring Letterman brand and demonstrated he still can surprise even fans who thought they knew him well.

But it isn't the first time Letterman has shown finesse in managing a firestorm.

In June, he had a run-in with then Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin over jokes made at the expense of her teenage daughter. He emerged from a tumultuous few days of protests and demands for his dismissal with a ratings jolt. And thanks to the dumb-luck timing of the flap, he also handily upstaged his much-hyped NBC rival just as O'Brien was taking over as "Tonight" host.

Letterman apologized to Palin and her family in what became another one of his memorable performances. But he has never stopped making jokes at Palin's expense — including yet another apology to her on Monday's show, just for good measure.

not sure why I was quoted the second time, again I guess there is a point I am missing - as we seem to be in agreement?????:confused3

Yes, I'm agreeing with you both times. :thumbsup2

Other people on this thread seem to think an unmarried man who sleeps around is such a scandalous crime. :scared1: Just reiterating for them, "Hello, we even have a word for it. He didn't invent sleeping around." ;)

And yes, he will get mileage from it. It's interesting, as the tabloids try to spin things and get the "scoop," they are actually competing with him as he has a nightly platform :mic: if he chooses, to counter-spin and head off their scoops, by saying it first. They don't get much mileage out of writing, "Letterman's Marriage in Trouble," yada, if he comes on air and says it first - and gets the ratings.

gotcha - wasn't sure where you were going with the monogamous thing.....I agree.

as for others' comments:

Totally not sure where having consenting relationships with women who knew how he was - is comparable to some of the things people are saying on here. How is Dave NOT the victim? A low life tried to blackmail him? The women aren't victims if they were of age, consenting, and knew what he was about/capable of - and I would bet they were well aware!!!!

If you have different rules at YOUR workplace, fine - that was not the case here. If you find it unethical/immoral/distasteful, fine - that is your right. That doesn't make these women victims, especially not of anything unlawful...AS IS THE EXTORTION!! SO, yes Dave is the victim!

"MAYBE" there were victims who were passed over for promotions, etc because of this, but we have no proof yet. If people do come forward, it will be up to the courts to decide if they were victims or just opportunists now coming forward to take advantage.

I understand some people don't like Dave (for his personality, style of humor, or politics), so of course this is isn't going to sit well with them. Let's not blow it out of proportion. Don't like him? Continue not to watch! Do you seriously think YOUR calls to fire him really matter to WWP or the network???

Geesh, I can't believe people are getting worked up over the age gap. Older successful men and young women have been the norm since the beginning of time, especially in the entertainment biz.

Bordering on child abuse? These college age women seeking a career in broadcasting in NYC CAN'T be so naive as to think..."Oh, poor me, my boss wants to have sex and I have no other choice." I think ya'll give these college women little credit for making choices in their lives and being aware of their options.

It's funny, I've worked in corporate America for almost 40 yrs. I've seen more preferential treatment/promotions, etc., given to toady kiss-butts, butt-covering assistants, and "good old boys(girls)" than to anyone playing boink the boss.

I hope he gets fired - most companies have policies against having relationships with subordinates. And he sure as heck will be sued if anyone got promoted for sleeping with the boss when someone more qualified should have been promoted. His ratings will surge for a short time then plunge like Jon & Kate's. He hasn't been funny for a long, long time anyway.

Most companies yes...all no.

Get fired for what dating someone you work with? If we all got fired for that unemployment would be higher than it is:rotfl:

As far as these "poor college girls" being victims shame on people that think college girls are that stupid.

I have to add...once being that poor twenty something dating an older man...it was fabulous!
Hey is was fabulous in my 30's as well ; )

Just an FYI....

CBS policy "Supervisor/Subordinate Relationships."

It reads:

"CBS recognizes that consenting romantic or sexual relationships may develop between a supervisor and a subordinate (whether such supervision is direct or indirect). These relationships frequently lead to complications and significant difficulties for the supervisor, the subordinate, others in the workplace, and CBS. If a consenting romantic or sexual relationship between a supervisor and a direct or indirect subordinate should develop, CBS requires the supervisor to disclose this information to his or her Company's Human Resources Department to ensure that there are no issues of actual or apparent favoritism, conflict of interest, sexual harassment, or any other negative impact on others in the work environment."

The Statement continues: "Upon being informed or learning of the existence of such a relationship, CBS will take steps that it deems appropriate to protect the workplace environment."

That said .... Dave is not an employee of CBS. He's employed by Worldwide Pants (WWP), his production company. WWP says, "We have a written policy in our employee manual that covers harassment. It is circulated to every employee every year. Dave is not in violation of our policy and no one has ever raised a complaint against him."

We do not know if WWP has a policy of requiring employees to disclose relationships with subordinates.

Lucky for Dave he doesn't work for CBS. Sounds like they would have done something to punish him.

I thought this was a hilarious statement made by Merrill Markoe, the head writer that Letterman was involved with for years:

"Okay. Here it is. My big comment on Mr. Letterman... It is this: As you can imagine, this has been a very emotional moment for me because Dave promised me many times that I was the only woman he would ever cheat on."

Dave never struck me as the faithful type. He said many times over on his show that he was a difficult person to be involved with. He always admitted to being a jerk. These women either knew what they were getting into and hoped they could change him or they were content with the arrangements.

And for those that are so annoyed with Letterman, why aren't you equally annoyed with the females that got involved with him? They all knew he had a live in girlfriend and they were very much aware of the fact that he was their boss.

Just an FYI....

The Statement continues: "Upon being informed or learning of the existence of such a relationship, CBS will take steps that it deems appropriate to protect the workplace environment."

And this means what? "Steps that it deems appropriate" can translate to "Geez, we realize you're making us millions of dollars, so next time pick a girlfriend that doesn't keep a diary, ok?"

Sorry if I sound cynical - I've had a bad coupla days trying to decipher/understand "corporate speak".

Somehow it is acceptable for an older man, who has big bucks, to take up with much younger women. If Dave were as good looking as George Clooney (swoon) most folks would not mind as much because they could imagine that they would grab that opportunity if it were presented to them. Poor Dave, while not unbearably ugly, is NOT a matinee idol and so many, when confronted with the idea of sex connected with him, are less than enthralled thus the uproar. Who would have thunk???:confused3

As long as the ratings are good Dave is not going anywhere. Even Bobby Knight (a very bad behaving guy) stuck around, until he started losing games.

Many men might not ever get married if they were not able to capture the heart of a young girl without knowledge of the world. I speak from experience as my husband is 14 years older than I am. :rotfl: I am the more mature though. :lmao:

There are many things that folks do that are not really right. Most of the time we do not realize this until we are older. If women want equality they also have to take equal responsibility for their choices. Life is not fair, you make your mistakes and then you deal with them. If everyone who had ever had an inappropriate relationship were fired tomorrow the unemployment rolls would easily be twice or more what it presently is. Does not make it right, it is just what it is.

Someone should have clued Dave into Internet dating, wider field to choose from and more likely to find someone less embarrassing. He surely had enough interns who could have filled out the questionnaires for him.

Slightly Goofy

I think Letterman has revealed himself to be very sleazy.

I could maybe buy the "you can't help it if you meet your true love at work" excuse but come on... numerous times, with numerous younger women employed by him, and not his equal in age or position, including while he was involved in an established relationship with the mother of his children.

Sorry but he starts to seem less an innocent victim of cupid's arrow and more like a predator.

"Worldwide Pants" There's got to be a joke in there somewhere.

I feel sorry for his son. These celebrities act like they are the best parents on earth, then the poor kids have to deal with the aftermath of this bad behavior for the rest of their lives. He's little now but soon he'll be reading about all this crap when he googles his dad or kids at school tease him. Not to mention the possibility of divorce or stress at home. Grow up!

[George Clooney is 48. He tends to go out with 27-30 yr olds. I don't think they think it's disgusting/QUOTE]

Big difference is here that Dave is ugly and none of these girls would be dating him if he wasn't rich, famous or the boss. I hope he realizes that when he's hurting his wife and son by trying to feed his obviously fragile ego.

Sorry, I don't see it any different then other celebrities and politicians who got caught cheating and fooling around.

Clinton even survived being a president. Why should the media go crazy when a talk show host does it.

I have watched Letterman for years and I have never once heard him give any indication that he thinks he is the best parent on earth. I have also never heard him say that he thought he was perfect. Actually, he admits regularly that he is a flawed individual and that he is not easy to be with.

What?? :confused3 I am not sure what you are saying. It is okay for young women to date Clooney because he is hot but they can't date Letterman because he is ugly? Or are you saying the only reason someone would date Letterman is because he is rich, famous or the boss? I guess the women dating Clooney are doing it because of his brain, right? It can't possibly be because he is hot, rich or famous.

Reality is that he has done what a number of men do - cheat. He didn't break any laws, he cheated. I wouldn't want to be married to him but this is between him and his wife.

And where is your utter indignation toward the women that slept with him? They knew darn good and well that he was living with someone. Two adults made very irresponsible decisions. They probably hurt a few people but they didn't commit a crime.

Didn't his wife work for him at one point? If so its pretty obvious who he dates and WWP, or CBS doesn't seem to have an issue with it, why should we?
