Dave Ramseying to Disney! Some final thoughts 8/18

To Agent or Not? To TGM or not?

  • Go it alone. It is worth all of the effort to plan it the way I want it.

  • Get the help. The right travel agent is worth his/her weight in pirate gold.

  • Plan it myself but get Tour Guide Mike to help with the itinerary.

  • Get the works. Use an agent AND buy Tour Guide Mike.

Dear Mom and Dad,
Can you believe we are only 59 days away from our trip? I wanted to offer some packing advice from a (semi) pro. I know that you already have your Minnie ears and Goofy hat sitting in a suitcase ready to head to the World but did you know there are other more important things to think about when traveling to Dis.
1. PONCHOS-Go to Dollar Tree and buy like 4. They fold to nothing and are perfect. But they are more or less disposable so best to get a few. They cost $1! They last forever. We are going in the rainiest season.
2. SHOES-There are water rides at all of the parks now, plus it rains a lot (see above). While sneakers and socks are great they stink (literally and figuratively) when wet. And they get worse in a one room hotel. We prefer water shoes that are comfy or sandals. Think Tevas, Crocs, Sperry water shoes. You do not want a leather sole (that means no Birkenstocks for me). If you aren't sure, put your sandals in a bucket of water. Then put them on and walk 5 miles. BTdub-The average park guest walks 5-7 miles a day. A DAY! You want something comfy. I recommend Chacos. They are a fortune but guaranteed for a lifetime. 5 1/2 months pregnant often carrying someone while walking 5 miles a day. Chacos!
3. Foot first aid. Get Moleskin, band-aids and even Body Glide or Runner's Lube for chafing. It will be hot, you will be moist. It is totally gross. Here is a good article. http://www.thewalkingsite.com/blisters.html
4. A park bag. There are entire blogs just about the perfect park bag. I have no answers. Our needs are not your needs. Too big and it weighs you down, too small and you are cramming stuff the whole time. Basically, you want to bring as little to the parks as possible. There is no wi-fi in the parks so ipads are dumb. I think that we should bring one DSL camera for the days we are all there. And I think it should be yours. :) Mom, I don't think you should bring your purse. I know that seems crazy but you will not want to carry it around all day. I really think a small backpack is the way to go. You can put the camera, your glasses and hats and small sweater for theaters/restaurants and you will be good. You don't need wallets. You will each have a Key to the World Card that will be your park tickets, room key and charging privileges throughout The World. Do you still have those id holder thingys you got us for Italy? That plus a small backpack will be perfect. Plus your autograph book ,pin collector's lanyard and the Mickey ears, of course.
5. Sunscreen, hats. But we'll pack enough SS for all of us to use at the parks. Pay careful attention to your toes, ankles and calves. The sun is reflected off the pavement and these burn quickly!
6. Food. We have the Disney Dining plan. That means we get one snack credit, one counter service credit and one sit down credit per day. But you can use them anytime in any order. Specifically, you have 4 of each since you are staying four nights. But granola bars, diet cokes, waters, frappuccinos, prepackaged muffins are all good ideas. Disney lets you bring any food or beverage into the park except glass. They are nice. It doesn't even have to be sealed or whatever. Please do not plan on sneaking my kids cheese-its while in line for Nemo. I'm looking at you Nancy!
7. Mugs or water bottles. Disney water tastes fine. I think it is a better plan to bring one or two stainless steel water bottles into the park and fill up at the water fountains than lug a bunch of bottles. It is going to be HOT and I hear there is some walking...There will be one small coffee pot in your room. It will have a package of terrible Cafe Valet. Pretend it isn't there. We will be bringing our 8 or maybe 12 cup coffee pot with the stainless carafe so there will be hot coffee all day. You may want to bring a travel mug in case our rooms are not right next door. Disney cannot guarantee. This resort is huge so it isn't like you will likely be able to run to the lobby for coffee. And even if you could the only coffee served at Disney is Nescafe made with Florida swamp water. Not worth a dime let alone the $3 it costs!
8. Clothes. Do not pretend that it may get chilly in the evening. It won't. It will be hot as blazes. Shorts, tanks, t-shirts are appropriate dress for all of the restaurants that we will be in. No need to pack a dress or dressy shoes. You may want a P.M. change of clothes because you stink but make sure it is just as light and casual as during the day. A sweater for restaurants and theaters is a good idea. I don't bother but I can thermoregulate better than other people.
9. Swimsuit. Duh!
10. Your unending gratitude that you have me as your vacation planner.

To recap: ponchos, shoes, sunscreen, hat, moelskin/bandaids/ runner lube, park bag, stainless water bottle are the important purchases.

Love,
Erin

I love it!

Thanks Jill! How have you been. So happy for Brooklyn next year. We'll have to have our girls play the same sport so they can be rivals! Do you and MeMom have a new PTR or TR or anything? Or are you still working on Pop to the Top? I have not checked it since my 3 month hiatus from the Dis.

Life has been crazy busy. Bella will be two on Tuesday so i have been working on birthday stuff on top of work, trainings, meetings, soccer, dance and gymnastics. Brooklynn is super excited about MA, as are we. We do have a new report from our last trip (Feb 25th-Mar 2nd). It is "Geen Yight She's Out of Sight - A Trip of Leaps and Bounds" Come join in when you get a minute.

LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!:rotfl2:
And I think I may need to borrow it for my MIL, though she'll still ignore the gentle suggestions.

Love all the pictures from your 2007 trip! I wish they'd bring back AK evening magic hours. AK is so cool at night.

I can't believe it was that hot in January! I sure would have taken hot over cold in December. :rotfl:

Yes, I had fun writing it. Maybe one day I will write a Disney Grump's Guide to Finding Magic. I still can't tell how they are going to be at Disney. But I can't wait to find out!

Yes, it was crazy. I want to say record temps for that week. And all of the shorts and bathing suits in the gift shops were sold out. My mom had bought Abby a couple cute princess track suits that didn't get worn.

:cool1::cool1:50 days until Disney!! :cool1::cool1:
Holy Moly. I can't believe it.

We have been so busy. Our countdown calender is in full swing. At first the kids just fought over it, Abby would pout if Brady got a surprise etc. But now they are doing great with it. There is nothing worse than working on a project only to have them fight and get upset but around here it usually works itself out. Especially when you threaten to take it away for awhile. :confused3

I have also been busy making our trip binder, autograph book and researching a Dream or Fantasy cruise as well as working and enjoying the beautiful spring weather we have been having. AND playing on our new iPad2 which we love very very much!

such cute photos of the kiddos
We are thinking about a countdown calendar, looks like I need to go to HD for some Mickey heads!

50 days out! That's not much longer. :cool1:

The countdown calendar turned out great! Do you think the boys understand what it is? Has anyone ripped it up yet?

Cute pictures of the kids outside. It's so great when the weather is nice enough to be outside. :goodvibes

Hey Erin! Just followed you over here from MY trip report (shameless plug, I know! ;)). Cracking up over your letter to Mom! :lmao:

Just reading over the last page so far (I'm weird in that I read trip reports backwards if I start late), you sound just like me. I do the binder, with beautiful full color pics as well. And the activity books when Ally was younger......

I get so excited reading other peoples' PTRs because it means YOU ARE GOING TO DISNEY SOON!!!!! :cool1:

The countdown calendar turned out great! I really like your binder and autograph book, too. I need to get a binder so I can stay more organized! I'd make an autograph book, too, but Juju will only let me buy the same exact autograph book each trip:confused3.

Can't believe it's only 50 DAYS:banana:!!

Yes, the binder is great. I thought with a TA I wouldn't make on but it has been fun and there will be things I include that she doesn't and vice versa.

Thank you for stopping by! :thumbsup2 I read them backwards too sometimes! We have got some fun challenges with my mom and dad. We are like a sitcom when we get together.

I don't know that they understand that each day represents getting closer to Disney but they know as soon as Colin is awake and changed that they get to pull a head off. Colin wakes up saying Mickey in his baby monitor now. That is too cute. But like this morning it was Abby's turn and she was bummed that "Brady open box 4" was revealed. Then he was so excited to get his pirate shirt and then stripped down instantly because he wanted to wear it and mean mommy made him put it in the packing box. He was about to sit down to a nutella waffle so I think I was justified. But try telling him that!

In retrospect I think I would do one of the paper chain ones from the Dis board and write my little fun facts on the back. I think those are prettier. This is BIG and CENTER in my house and we are about to have a lot of non-Disney enthusiast company in the next few weeks. But it was fun to make. And do you know that all of those HD trips my DH would bring home a stack and not once did he bring home lime green so now I still need to get those for or trip. We are going to be banned from that store!

Hi there,
Do you notice anything different about me? No, well look down. That's right my siggy has changed to reflect my newest upcoming Disney adventure. And by upcoming I mean 17 months away. In 17 months I will be on the Fantasy headed to Grand Cayman, Cozumel, Costa Maya and Castaway Cay. We are doing backflips over here as we speak. I can't believe it. My mind is racing with how awesome this trip will be. In fact my current trip is a little jealous of my next trip. This trip will celebrate our tenth anniversary and C's third birthday. I just can't believe it. By then we will have paid off the two cars ( already done), and at least two if not all three student loans (one is paid off). We are going to have to work our tails off for this trip. But it will be more than worth it. Yeah!
