Who has did the dave ramsey class? Is the online one the same as attending the class. Has it worked for you? Is there ever a price break on the class? Discount codes ect... I really want to do this but it's $99.00 up front cost don't know if it is going to be a waste... Thanks in advanace...

We did Financial Peace University. It was very helpful to us. We were young, just married, and needed some financial direction. Sometimes classes offered through churches will pay for the materials/fees for you. Unfortunately, our leader was not very helpful at all, so we did most of the class stuff on our own. Every class is led by a different person, so if you're not happy with the leader of the class you sign up for you can go to a different class. Once you pay you're a lifetime member and can attend classes any time you want/need to.

If the money up front is tough for you, try reading Dave Ramsey's books, which are probably available at your library. You can do a lot on your own.

What we found helpful was that there was a set of steps to follow that helped us prioritize our money and spending, and get out of debt. At age 25 the only debt we had was our home. Not too shabby. Unfortunately we've had to borrow a small amount to purchase a car, but we're paying it down rapidly. So now we only owe a couple thousand on a car, and our home. Still not bad at age 29.

I agree about checking at your library; we already had the books, but got the audio books as well, just to listen to when we need some reminding...:rotfl:

Also, I recommend either listening to his show or downloading the podcast of the show (can be found on his website or iTunes; if you're a paying member of mytotalmoneymakeover.com you get all 3 hours of the show commercial-free). I like to listen to the show, it keeps me motivated (and is a great reminder that we're not alone!)

Good luck! We've only been following Dave's plan (loosely...not even "gazelle intense") since October, and have gotten our beginning emergency fund in place and knocked out 6 credit cards. We hope to be debt free except the mortgages by the end of the year! It really does work!!!

We wanted to go and couldn't swing the $$ for the materials either. Luckily, the church that was holding the class let us come and sit in on the video for FREE. We were able to gain the whole wealth of information without having the workbook (which is just a fill-in-the-blank thing anyway). Someone lent us a copy of the Cds (which turned out to be the exact same thing as the video) and they gave us the class password for Dave's website so that we could download stuff. Without the password, you can still get a few free things on his site, but he charges a membership premium for full access (so unless you're a class member and can access the site free during the life of the class, there's a limitation).

If I were you, I'd talk to the class moderator about sitting in without purchasing the materials. Explain how, since you're trying to gain control of your finances and become debt free, there's no room in your budget for a class membership. Ask if they would let you just come and watch the videos (and join in the discussion). I bet they'd let you do it.

It sounds like the church was more interested in helping than collecting the fees. I like that, because as a Dave Ramsey fan, I know that although he needs to make money, he also gets great satisfaction in knowing that he's helping others.

Sharing passwords doesn't seem right, but again if it was part of the class, and you were given the class, it should be OK.

By being a listener of him, you already know one of his favorite things. Often he'll give away free classes on his show. The condition being that when the person given the gift gets in control of their finances, they pay back by buying the class for someone else who needs it.

His plan, although really just common sense, has made a significant difference in our life. I hope you are able to "pay back" your free class someday soon for someone else who really needs it.

Our church does Crown Financial instead of Dave Ramsey. It was $55 for a couple, $45 per individual if you are doing it alone.

It completely changed our lives. We no longer owe on anything but our house and we hope to eventually sell it and downsize. We just want to live better with less!

I read his book and it helped me tremendously. My CCs were maxed with crazy interest rates that were killing me. We're talking BIG debt, Well, with DRs help, we'll be debt free in two weeks and will begin to start saving again. We've changed the way we spend money, and the future looks bright. We have a vacation account so that we won't go into debt again for our planned Disney Fantasy Cruise in 2013. Get his book to see if you like his methods. I also like Clark Howard. Good good luck to you.

I just posted this question on the live like no one else board today. We too are very torn. We read Total Money Makeover and we have been slow going. Not sure if this class would be a jump starter or a set back. They say if you do it online you don't get the support and it is easier to drop out. BUT the thought of paying a babysitter for 13 weeks PLUS the 100.00 fee class doesn't seem right either.

going to class. Accountability and people who are going through it with you.

And it's lifetime. So you can take it 4 times if you want. LOL.

And alot of churches offer free babysitting during the class, just check around.

I would do it in real life before I did it online.

But if you can't do it, get TMMO from the library or when he has his $10 book sales and do it that way. You don' t need the workbook as his forms are all in back of book or you can print free from his online site.

Good luck.

It changed our lives!

Trish

Our church provides babysitting during the class.

You might see if there is a church near you that offers this.
