DAVE RAMSEY on Oprah today

I haven't read his books or heard of him before this board. I forgot that he is coming on today, until I turned on Dr. Phil.

I can't wait to see what he is about.

Watching it now....love the segment on the spoiled teens. Hopefully they'll get a clue in college or Mom and Dad will be bailing them out for a long, long time...

I was excited to watch the show, esp. after so many Disers speak highly of him. I was hoping to learn more though and the show seemed to me to be more about extreme cases-I'd love to read his book though (do my fellow Disers recommend it?!). :flower:

I was a little disappointed in the show. Oprah didn't give Dave a chance to talk much, in my opinion. He didn't get to explain baby steps or anything! (unless I missed it while helping with a homework question)

I disagree with Oprah and thinks bills/money is not just the responsibility of one person. BOTH people have to be involved, imo!

I didn't think he'd give out that info. Then nobody would need to buy the book. It was interesting though. I doubt that family with the teens will change one bit. I hope the first couple finds a way to stay together.

OMG!
Those teens...although it's not their fault... I agree with Dave it's child abuse...raising such spoiled smug brats.
The Mom was in total denial. And like Oprah said, if there's no problem, why did you want to be on the show and say they are out of control?
The parents are out of control in this situation.
I think Mom is not so secretly happy thay she is raising "keep up with the Jones's" kids.
And I don't think they will change at all.

Yeah, in some ways I agree....that the Mom was more like..."hey, my kids are out of control with their spending, but we can totally afford it." And they probably can...the parents that is...but how about those kids. She'd better hope that her daughter marries someone very wealthy. I couldn't believe that girl was spending $300 a month on clothing...and supposedly the total for the two of them was $600 a month? I'm betting you it's way, way higher than that. Plus, the cars, car insurance, gas....they're surely not covering that either. I liked Dave's plan of matching the funds of what his kid saved for a car. We don't have kids, but if we had them, we'd be using a plan similar to that. Those people are doing their kids a huge disservice.

The engaged couple...yeah, they definitely need to postpone that wedding until they're on the same page financially. I can't imagine carrying that amount of credit card debt. It's not as though they didn't make a nice income....90K....so not bad. And the mortgage was only 105K. So, it's clear that they're living way, way above their means.

It's not all that surprising though. I was listening to Clark Howard, who I really like and he said that 60% of the people in this country carry a balance on a credit card....so, a big, big problem.

I JUST GOT TO WATCH IT AND I TOO WAS DISAPPOINTED I THOUGHT HE WAS GIVE ALITTLE MORE INFO ON HIS BOOKS SO PEOPLE WOULD WANT TO GO OUT AND BUY THEM... :confused3 :scratchin

Yep, I too was a little disappointed in the show. I don't think Dave came off all that favorable. Partly due to the extreme, almost unrelatable (thats probably not a word) nature of the guests that were on that show and the inability for the casual watcher to see any value in the remediation, but rather gasp at the severity of the guests' situations. And the fact that it wasn't his show to run, but rather Oprah's. Plus that whole big deal at the beginning about the apology from the husband to the wife.

Lots of value in Dave's system nonetheless.

Ugh. After months of letting TIVO tape whatever it wanted, TODAY DH decided he would "clean up" the shows it taped. Oprah, we don't need that. Click. GONE. ARGH! At least it sounds like I didn't miss much. TMM is on hold for me at the library, so I'm going to pick it up tomorrow.

I just cringed when I saw the mother of the two spoiled teens making a peanut butter and jelly sandwhich while her daughter was buying Starbucks and son spending $80 on food a week. Wow! And the mother shopping at Payless while her daughter spends $300 a month on clothes. Yet, the irony is that the mother is ok with this.

I bet she was "ok" with in front of the Oprah show because the neighbors were watching. Heaven forbid they can't afford something!

The first couple mad me sad. I think the husband has some serious grounds for divorce but I hope he realizes that although she messed up she seems truly sorry for her mistake. I am rooting for them and hope they make a dent in that debt.

I recently read TMM...though it was very good..except for 2 small points. I was hoping Dave would have shown examples of what people could do...like she did with David Brach(sp...Smart Women retire rich). He (david) took a few people and showed them what they could do, I think she even had like a million dollars on a table. I though it would be more like that. IMO Oprah was a little rude to Dave(I stopped watching her 2 years ago), so this was a special day for me. I think Oprah and many of her viewers are all about the image...so of course Dave would not be the bearer of good news...live below your standard of living. What? :rotfl:
I have been asked to speak by several women's groups, and I keep turning them down, because I honestly feel people know how to save money and get out of debt, but they just don't want to. And honestly I felt bad for that first woman (pregnant with twins). Dave was right , her DH kep blaming her...but honestly to me she seems like a lot of other executive wives I know-lonely, miserable, bored, and starving for some attention. Some (not all) husbands make sure their wives know they are the ones making the money. I hope the 2 couples work it out- the family is totally lost, and nothing will change in their princess/prince lifestyles. Can you spell Cha Ching!!!

You know, I was given a subscription to Oprah's magazine for Christmas last year and I was shocked at how many high end advertisements it has, and "articles" about "what's hot" that have outrageous price tags. Hello? Does this woman realize that most of her audience is stay at home moms who are struggling to feed their families? I don't know what she gets paid for these ads, but it's totally wasted on most of us. The odd thing is she really seems like a smart lady who is down to earth and does shows that really try to help people, but I guess her wealth has changed her.

I watched the "after the show" show. I was not impressed with him. He didn't tell anyone anything they didn't already know. I guess, I was looking for more methodologies on how to achieve debt-free, but he "fingered and name called" a lot.

I have a feeling that the peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and payless shopping was a bit of a put-on for the cameras. I think it would nearly impossible to be *that* frugal and have kids that are so totally out of control.

I wish I had seen the After Show. I was hoping Dave would have more time to discuss his plan.

The 2nd couple blew me away. I started feeling like there is something wrong with *me* because I have no problem telling my kids No. :rotfl:
