Dave Ramsey on DVC

Like all you guys, the video annoyed me. I think we all already know that if we bought a mutual fund instead of DVC we’d make more money. But so what! I’m sure many of us already have plenty of mutual funds. DVC makes us happy, and, guess what, we’ll probably make a little when we ultimately sell and if we lose it won’t be that much!

It’s not an investment, it’s super fun, and there’s a way out. So what’s the friggin’ problem? :)
Well, I'd argue it IS an investment, just not a financial one! :P

I disagree with him talking about the contract going to zero. I wouldn’t think of this as an investment to sell and profit from. I would look at it as a way to vacation and defray vacation costs. If at the end of the lifespan of the contract, the aggregate cost of all vacations taken via such DVC contract is less than the cost for the similar or same vacations without DVC, then such DVC contract was a good investment.

In fact, guides aren’t allowed to call DVC an investment. They can only say you are investing in a vacation experience or something like that.

EVERYTHING goes to zero, eventually.

I think people can't help it sometimes to look at it as a financial investment because it costs so much to buy and own. DR and other naysayer's primary concern is being stuck with annual dues that owners have no control over. I can see it from both sides. Before we bought, we really had to ask ourselves if Disney is something we would like to do year-after-year. I wasn't 100% sure at the time, but we took the plunge anyways because we could afford to. But now that we're neck deep in it, the answer is an overwhelming yes. I think the real question is, even if we did go to Disney consistently, would we stay in Disney property, let alone, a deluxe property every time we go to Disney? Without DVC, heck no! But that's not even a question anymore. And the wonderful memories staying in some of these resorts are priceless.

This! If your goal in life is just to amass as much money as possible, than any vacation (never mind DVC!) isn't "worth it". I don't think money is what life is all about though; it's meant to be used. Be responsible with it, but depriving yourself of the things that bring you joy, just so your bank account is bigger, isn't really living imho.
Yes. 100% this.
I considered buying a boat but decided on DVC instead.
Agree. Almost all of my friends have RV's, and most of them have boats, jet skis, etc. I don't have any of those things because I bought DVC instead.

This is how I look at our decision too. My parents bought a more traditional timeshare back in the 80s and so I had a pretty good idea how they worked, and the concept of dues did not shock me. And for us, being in the Disney bubble when we visit -- and knowing when we are coming back -- is worth the upcharge and the dues.

(If left to his own devices, my DH would never commit to a time for vacation, and we'd be left planning a vacation at the last minute. All. The. Time. This makes him commit and he is always happy that we've made the plan.)

My husband is the same way. There's a point on every trip where he'll look at me and say "thank you for making sure we do this, it would never happen if it were left up to me". I know I annoy him in the months beforehand, asking alllll the questions, but this makes it worth it.

100%!!!
And he means it and is fully self-aware about it all.

I actually still ask the family whether I should try for a switch at 7mo. Now that the kids have opinions, it makes for lively and fun conversation. But we are happy wherever we wind up!

DH: still loves BWV and BCV (in addition to our home resorts)
11 yo: loves BLT, VGF and BWV
7yo: WE'RE GOING TO DISNEY WORLD!! I WANT THE RESORT WITH THE WATER SLIDE!! ANY SLIDE!!

my 8 year old daughter says VGC, BLT, and BCV or bust! 😂

Isn’t this the guy who was stanning for one of those timeshare exit scams a few years back, and then got called out on it and doubled down? Those are all scams. I would be highly suspect about anything this guy has to say about timeshares.
He did, and he also gives out a lot of other bad advice, but a broken clock is right twice a day.
