I keep hearing everyone talk about Dave Ramsey and his program. I went to his website, but I was unsure of what product everyone is using. Also, I am unsure whether or not his program would be best for me. The only debt I have is my regular mtg. payment as well as about $7,000 in student loans left. I do not however have any savings to speak of and want to get a good financial plan going for myself and my children's future.

My ex-husband passed away last year and my children receive survivor benefits and I just want to make sure that they are well set when it comes time for college. Do you think this program would work for us and what product do I need to look into purchasing? Thanks in advance for any help.

Look at getting Total Money Makeover at the library or when Dave puts it on sale for $10 on the website. He's a great source of information and inspiration to get things moving in the right direction.

As far as your girls and their future education needs, I'd look at a financial planner for that type of information.

Don't buy anything until you get the book the PP mentioned from the library! It's good, common-sense advice that, unfortunately, isn't common enough. :rotfl:

When I started getting interested in DR last year about this time, I had $8K or so of student loan debt in addition to our mortgage. Our only debt is now the mortgage and we have an additional $10K in savings, as well as having cash-flowed a new deck for our home (to the tune of about $6K). Changing spending habits is a big deal - wish I were doing better with it, but still...we've made significant strides!

Get a Dave Ramsey book from your library-there are several with similar messages. Total Money Makeover or Financial Peace are the best. But, the very best thing to do is take a Financial Peace University class. If you go on the Dave Ramsey website, you can put in your zip code and find classes near you (they are often held at churches but everyone is welcome). Dave Ramsey is about much, much more than debt. The second half of FPU deals with building wealth and would give you a lot of information beyond how to get out of debt.

I also recently seen the local sams club has a Dave Ramsey kit that comes with the TMMO book, workbooks and financial software. I think it was $40.

If you like message boards and getting input from "real" people, there's livinglikenooneelse.com (llnoe.com). It's Ramsey's principles and babysteps explained and discussed.

I second that. I :lovestruc it over there

I agree with PP, check the book out of the library. His plan is common sense, and would help you get on the right track, even if you don't follow the steps to the letter.

I've paid off $11,000 in Credit Card debt, and only have a car loan left now. I'm in a MUCH better position financially then I ever thought I could be at 23 (and waiting tables..)...So I can say for sure that it's helped me!!

I completely agree with everyone so far- I just wanted to add that if you receive the Fox Business network you can watch his show. He also has a radio show that you might be able to get as well. It is just another way to find out more about Dave and to be inspired by others.

I agree with the others who have said you don't have to buy anything. You can listen to his radio show here online: http://www.daveramsey.com/radio/home/
His show is on Mon-Fri 2-5pm EST.
He is pretty entertaining.

You can also get the book Total Money Makeover from the library.

Also, it USED to be that some of these episodes were available via HULU>:thumbsup2

I've been a member of DR's "real" forum, TMMO, for three years. Until recently I've never heard of llnoe, and I've never checked it out, but I can suggest with a HUGE thumbs up to mytmmo.com. It's a great community with a lot of people on the same page working towards similar goal. Currently my family is on Babysteps 4-6 and have worked the plan the way the book recommends.
