My husband got some tickets for the Dave Matthews concert from work and our two daughters (9 and 10) want to go. We know the music, I'm not worried about that - I'm mostly worried about what the crowd will be like. I know the college crowd will be there and I guess I'm just wondering what we should expect. We do have good club seats through DH's company and I know the girls would love it but I just want to hear from anyone who's been. Thanks.

UPDATE: Well, the concert was last night and boy, do I feel old! Don't get me wrong, it was really great, it's just that I have to admit that my concert days are behind me. First of all, we hit traffic all the way into Boston so didn't stop for dinner like planned. When we got there the opening act was still on (Emmylou Harris I think, we were late to hear who it was). DMB didn't come on until close to 9:00. The accoustic part was awesome, they sound just like they do on the CDs. Well, after the break they had the full-out concert which was fun. The smoke was VERY heavy! There was another mom next to me with her kids and we were talking about how different our lives were with kids around (we discussed exit plans and possible terrorist attacks in the arena of all things! Quite a departure from our old concert days - Talk about OLD!) By around 10:30 or so, the kids started doing the old head-bob, dozing off thing so we decided to leave (poor DH, he was really enjoying himself). After catching oldest DDs contact lens off the Fleet Center floor, it was time to go. So, as you can see we survived but I have to admit that this was probably not the best parenting moment of our lives. Live and learn but I think we'll wait 'til they're older to try again. Thanks, again for all your input.

I went to a DMB concert a few years ago. Everyone there was pretty mellow. I didn't see anything that would be inappropriate from my point of view (but I'm 23 with no kids!)

I think the girls would be fine, especially if you have club seats.

Well, I took my older DD's to their first concert when they were about that age (MC Hammer and Boyz 2 Men). Unfortunately there are some of the same things going on at milder music concerts as there are at Rock concerts. But the girls looked at me when they saw some of these things and were grossed out. This may be an eye-opening experience, in a good way. Good luck! :D

I saw DMB 2 years ago, and was surprised by the number of people smoking weed, and there were a lot of underage people drinking, some to the point of getting sick. Granted, this was a late summer concert, outdoors (Gillette Stadium in MA), and we weren't in the best seats either.
If you have club seats though, I wouldn't worry about it too much, this kind of thnig seems to be usually confined to the cheap seats.

As a veteran of no fewer than 28 DMB concerts, I think you will be fine.

The outdoor concerts have more of a "party" atmosphere (if you can call it that at a Dave Matthews concert)-- but sitting in club seats I sincerely doubt you will see anything offensive. The vibe at all the concerts I have been to has been very mellow. People who are there are there to hear the music, not so much to party.

Hope this helps!

LOTS of pot smoking at the one i went to, but nothing visually inappropriate.

Ditto Caity's answer - we saw them last year and could have gotten high off the smell alone.

A very mellow crowd the night we went (and I can see why, everyone was stoned! )

I saw the DMB this summer and the crowd was pretty mellow, I wouldn't worry. If your seats are near the stage you may want to bring earplugs if loud music bothers your young ones' ears.

Thanks everyone! This is exactly what I thought the response would be - mellow, fun crowd with a little "funny" stuff thrown in. All in all, I think they'll be fine - they don't know what that weird smell is anyway so maybe it will just pass by without comment. Can't wait, thanks again for your opinions.

If we survived the American Idol tour (think thousands of screaming young girls), I'm sure this will be a whole other experience - a little better for mom and dad, too!

Your daughters might get high off the surrounding smoke alone...

And yes, I've been to one. Mellow crowd, though lots of drinking and drug use.

I've been to plenty of concerts but it's chilled out crowd. There's definitly plenty or smoking but nothing too serious. Just keep a close watch on 'em and you guys will have a great time.

I thought the update would bump this up. Just wanted to share with everyone who helped us. :D
