Daughter lost license can she still fly?

So my Daughter, she's 35, just called asking for her Birth Certificate since she lost her license. Obviously a HUGE problem. I can't find the BC, I suspect her Mother had it. She doesn't have a Passport. Maryland is swapping over to Real ID and when you go in for a license they mail it to you in 7-10 days. We fly out on Saturday March 9th. Is there any hope?

I saw this on the TSA website:

In the event you arrive at the airport without valid identification, because it is lost or at home, you may still be allowed to fly. The TSA officer may ask you to complete an identity verification process which includes collecting information such as your name, current address, and other personal information to confirm your identity. If your identity is confirmed, you will be allowed to enter the screening checkpoint. You will be subject to additional screening, to include a patdown and screening of carry-on property.

You will not be allowed to enter the security checkpoint if your identity cannot be confirmed, you chose to not provide proper identification or you decline to cooperate with the identity verification process.

I'm not an expert, but as I understand it the TSA agent will use information collected in a public database (similar to credit reports) to verify identity. Your daughter may be asked for past addresses, for example.

A quick search online says that the following may be helpful to have (if applicable):
  • Library card
  • Business card
  • Student ID
  • Mail
  • Passport card
  • Photo of an ID
  • Prescription medication with your name

Anything ID with both her name and picture will be helpful. Clearly, a Costco membership card isn't the same thing as a government-issued ID. But, this process is about using small pieces of information to verify identity. The more bits of data that she can provide, the easier the process will be.

Thanks guys. We are panicking a bit but we hope it'll turn out OK. She's going to go to the Vital Records tomorrow to get a new Birth Certificate. Then later this week she will go to MVA to start the process for a new license and change of address. She won't get the actual Driver's License in person because they mail them out now with Real ID.

She plans on braining the BC, a copy of her W2, a utilities bill, a Social Security card, and any other ID she can find. Hopefully a family traveling with a couple of younger kids, those proof of address, and all of us vouching for her they'll let her on the plane. But we're still worried since we won't really know until we try to fly.

I once used a baptismal certificate to prove my identity after my purse was stolen while visiting my parents out of state. Its a rough deal. Make sure she gives herself plenty of time.

There is an online service I have used in the past that offers overnighted vital records. They are legit. They run payments through Lexis Nexus, so I know its legit (and it is). Just google it and you can find the link pretty easy. Its the best idea and most likely to work with other forms of "Identification." Worth the try, even if its gonna be a nailbiter.

if I remember you guys are in Pa try getting her a picture ID that is only an ID not license if close enough. used to be able to get that on that day. might be worth the peace of mind if you could do that

Does your daughter have CLEAR?

If she is already a member of CLEAR, she won't need ID to fly. With CLEAR, you simply have to have your boarding pass. CLEAR already has your photo and info on file.

This helped me immensely when my purse was stolen in Las Vegas (and I was flying home that night). I made a police report and they told me to allow 3 hours for additional security at the airport. I had absolutely no ID, no library card, no utility bill. Nothing. But because I had CLEAR, I just showed up at regular time, went through CLEAR (who escorts you to TSA and vouches that you are who you purport to be and the name matches the boarding pass), and then through the metal detectors.

First off, apply for the new license immediately in person, usually they will at least give you a temporary license until the permanent one arrives in the mail, this won't get you on a plane in and of itself, but when combined with as many other forms of ID as possible it may help, some things to bring:
  • Anything with her picture and name on it, such as a Costco card
  • Library card
  • If she is a student anywhere, her student ID (even and older expired student ID may help)
  • Birth certificate
  • Utility bills
  • Anything government issued in her name
  • Anything else listed on the TSA site
As for the return flight, it might be a good idea to have someone check your mail daily and overnight her the replacement ID when it arrives to avoid a hassle returning.

Also, as the PP has said, if she has CLEAR it shouldn't matter, as long as the airports involved participate in CLEAR.

My dad has no license (or passport) and flies domestically at least once a year. He goes early, he is prepared to chat, and it’s been fine.

The tsa site info that you posted is pretty clear. It’s not worth panicking about.

I have seen the advertisements for Clear. It must come in SO HANDY if your purse or wallet gets stolen or lost.:eek: Wow, great for you! Is Clear an annual membership? What are the fees per year? Thanks in advance!

We're in MD and they're converting all ID over to the Real ID. So they no longer do same day IDs. :( But thanks for the suggestion.

No Clear or passport. She rarely flies so didn't really need those.

One year I lost my license while in Florida...later found it in a pocket in my purse...anyway I was able to fly home. It was a SWA employee that let me through. I think my boarding pass was flagged for extra screening but I can't remember. It really was pretty easy...I did offer to stay until I could get a new ID:D I'm sure it happens frequently and they have a policy in place to deal with it.

It will be fine. Don't sweat it.
In November I realized I didn't have my license while standing IN the security line. I told the TSA agent at the podium and they called over another agent to walk me through an enhanced screening process. He asked for 2 forms of ID (Credit card, whatever. I happened to have my concealed carry permit - state issued with my picture, which seemed to make it go smoother).
Once through the scanner they really swabbed all of my belongings for explosive residue and sent me on my way. Probably an extra 5 minutes and they were all really nice about it.
My wife met up with me at my destination a few days later and brought my passport to make the return trip a bit easier.

As one of my co-workers said afterwards, TSA knows that anyone looking to do bad things on an airplane is going to try to be as inconspicuous as possible and not put themselves in a position for extra scrutiny.

Uh-huh... You "lost" your license in a pocket that was accessible to you the whole time, then generously offered to extend your stay indefinitely... Yeah, okay ;)

Bill - I *think* they will give her a receipt at Motor Vehicles w/ her license info on it. Perhaps that will help.
I'm going next month, already have my appt.. Ridiculous amount of paperwork I have to bring in, especially considering I already have my passport.

Yea, they should give her a temp ID without a picture.

I went last month to get my license renewed. I took at least a half dozen proofs of address/ID including my passport. But it was still a 3 hour wait because I didn't have the appointment. You should have it much easier with an appointment.

It looks like they will expedite.
Question:
What if I’m in a rush and need my license or ID card quickly?

Answer:
It’s important to plan ahead to ensure you give yourself enough time to receive your new product through the mail. However, the MVA offers the option to receive your driver’s license or ID card the next day through the USPS, which charges $15 for expedited delivery. Please note that you must be present and provide a signature when your expedited product is delivered by the USPS.
