You're in sub group, I owe the "First Sergeant!" a beer. Lyn, calling a 1SG sir is a serious faux pas. One cold beer is the penaltyfor this felonious violation! :goodvibes

Yeah, Lyn, come on here. This has been explained before. :)

BTW, I would gladly buy First Sergeant Paul a Beer for all that he has done for our country! :thumbsup2

Seeing as I do not know what a "1SG" is.... I see see no faux pas.

Maybe I do not belong in any sub group.
Perhaps I am in the "you should respect your elders" sub group?

1SG's (or any sergeant) "sir" isn't appropriate since they work for a living. Its only those officers that get called sir.

Ignorance of the ways in which you are kept free is no excuse. You owe a beer young lady. No way around it! :goodvibes

Well, seeing as I am probably close to twice your age and you called me "young lady"...

Just the same, although I grew up an hour from Fort Dix and my father was ROTC Air Force, I do not know military ranking.

When I was in high school and part of a Girl Scout troop of thirty girls, I was very surprised to learn that a "troop" is one person!

Just curious - seems to me that you are looking to collect many free beers. Are you going to be able to make it around the World in an upright position?

Okay, now as a civilian, I just don't know what to make of this statement.

Are you saying that officers do not work for a living, yet the deserve the respect of a "Sir"?

Trying to learn... Seems to me that a sergeant is still an officer in command of people. That should be respected. Even if they are non-commisioned.

Wikipedia

Staff Sergeant is a rank of non-commissioned officer.

In most armies the rank of sergeant corresponds to command of a squad (or section). In the United States Army sergeant is a more junior rank, corresponding to a squad second-in-command.

More senior non-commissioned ranks are often variations on sergeant, for instance staff sergeant, flight sergeant and sergeant major.

Lyn, if you're not careful, you're going to end up owing our entire military a beer. Each.
