My son has autism and I have a few questions

We have a DAS from a previous trip. Can we renew his DAS at guest services Downtown Disney?

My son has limited foods he will eat. Can I bring a frozen Uncrustable peanut butter & jelly sandwich thru TSA?

We are flying Spirit Airlines. The airline allows a personal item to be taken on the plane free of charge. Food for the flight is also allowed, as is a car seat. Anyone think a small lunch box size soft sided cooler will be a problem in addition to a personal item?

DAS can only be obtained or renewed at the Theme Parks, so you won't be able to do it at Downtown Disney.
You should bring the old one with you because having it will shorten the process. They should be able to scan it and print a new one without taking a new picture.

Other people have posted they brought them thru security and they were not an issue since they are not considered a liquid. In general, anything that won't hold its own shape outside of a containe is considered a liquid. Peanut butter and jelly both would hold their shape (and there is very little jelly that isn't soaked into the bread part anyway).

With any other airline, I don't know for sure, but don't think it would be a problem. Because of how Spirit charges by the item for 'options', I don't have any idea.

I have never flown Spirit, but in reading their website I would say each passenger is allowed 1 free personal item. By my interpretation of their rules I wouldn't expect them to would allow a lunch bag plus a personal item. Could his lunch bag fit inside a backpack (or whatever your son will have as his personal item)? That's what I would do. Just make sure whatever you use to keep items cold is frozen solid (not a standard gel- or water-filled ice pack); many people like to use frozen grapes.

Enjoy your vacation!

A backpack and a lunch box should be fine. Worse comes to worse shove the lunch box in the back pack until you are through security. My husband always goes through with a backpack and a laptop case and never has a problem.

Just listened to a segment on NPR about Spirit Airlines. Apparently, they are very strict with their one personal item rule.

Also, it looks like their personal item size limit is 16x14x12. That's pretty small, but a small backpack may work. You'll be able to have one personal item for each of you.

Wish you the best with your trip!

TSA security should not be a problem.

What you described is allowed for most airlines -- one carry-on plus a personal item. I frequently travel for work with a small suitcase (carry-on) and a briefcase (personal item).

However, OP is flying Spirit Airways which has very strict rules regarding number and size of the free personal item carry-on. This airline charges extra fees for more than one or a larger (normal carry-on) size.

Enjoy your vacation!

The issue isn't with security, the issue is with the airline. Most airlines allow a personal item and a carry on (i.e. your husband's backpack and laptop case). Sprint, however, is very specific and particular. They only allow one personal item (16x14x12) for free. Anything else and you are charged extra.

Spirit is not my favorite airline, but Memorial Day weekend fares were very high on the other airlines. Spirit charges for checked and carry on bags and the max weight is 40 pounds (other airlines is 50#). Our suitcases are going to Orlando via Fedex. We are staying offsite and not dealing with baggage claim at MCO was so worth it and Fedex for us was actually a little bit cheaper.

Found this buried on Spirit website

How much does Spirit charge for bags?
Current bag prices are available here. Every passenger is allowed one personal item (like a small backpack, purse or laptop bag) with their Bare Fare™ – any bag on top of that will need to be paid for, including carry-ons. Having passengers pay for their own bags keeps ticket prices low for everyone. Bags are always less expensive if you buy early and online, so if you know you’re going to need a carry-on or a checked bag, buy it right when you book your flight to save some money.

Check out size and weight limits for bags, as well as embargo restrictions. Remember: you can bring one personal item plus carry on items like an umbrella, camera, infant diaper bag, assistive devices, outer garments (e.g. coats, hats, and wraps), reading material, and food for the flight for no additional charge.
In some instances wheelchairs, car seats and strollers may be checked or carried on free of charge.

Must be an FAA rule, as Spirit would charge if they could. Looks like a lunch bag would be allowed in addition to a personal item, but who knows :confused3

Sadly, I interpret that to mean you could bring food in a paper lunch sized bag, or fast food purchased in the terminal. Nothing else on the list, like a coat or umbrella require a carrying case. A lunch in a small cooler is probably a bag. This being Spirit, the safest best is probably to carry your food in your mouth, like a dog carries a bone. If the lunch box won't fit in a backpack, I'd pack the food small disposable baggies, and then put those baggies in a larger baggie, so that you can hand carry anything if necessary.

I just wanted to add that peanut butter by itself, not as part of a sandwich is considered a liquid by the tsa and subject to the 311 rulrs. In case anyone was reading this andthought to bring some bread and a jar on their next flight.

Yes, good point. I was thinking of it in terms of the sandwich. A tub of it would be a different situation. I think they call it a creamy liquid or something like that for TSA.

That's what I am afraid of - Spirit would charge you to use the bathroom on the plane if the FAA would let them! I don't want to be charged $100 at the gate to bring a lunch box on the plane.
