I've never seen the show, but, I trust Johnny Depp and Tim Burton. If I see the movie, will I "get" it? Will I not know what's going on? Should I watch the show on Netflix first? Or will I enjoy it anyway?

Thanks!

Oh gosh!! We went and saw it last weekend and it was FUNNY!! I have never even HEARD of the tv show.. But dh and I were going to the drive in for date night last weekend, originally to see the hunger games, but when we pulled in we saw the ads for Dark SHadows. *I* thought we made the right choice... Neither of us knew crud about the hunger games either.. But our choices were slim.. I prefer funny silly movies though.

You don't need to know anything about the show to get the movie. It's a revamp (no pun intended) not a continuation of the show. We liked it. It is silly and campy but not really a true comedy.

There are "in" jokes for those of us who loved he show, but the movie is a stand-alone reboot. Depp fans will like it.

I think there were a lot of in jokes, I know my mom was roaring at parts where I barely chuckled.

I really thought it was kind of lame. :confused3 I've sen a few scattered episodes from watching with my mom, but I did not like this at all. I thought the plot was weak, they jumped the shark a good couple of times, and there was way too much "Time Burton-ness" for me. But I'm also apparently the only person in the world who doesn't like Tim Burton in general. :lmao:

For those who have seen it, how is it for a 9 year old? I know it's rated PG-13, but reading the screen-it reviews, I'm thinking it might be OK for her to see. Most adult jokes goes right over her head and she's not a scaredy-cat at all. She's asking to go see it and my mom would love to take her. Thoughts?

I've never seen the show and I found the movie entertaining but not a movie I would watch twice. I have a 10 y/o DD and I was glad I didn't bring her. It's a little dark and there is some blood and an awkward sex scene.

I thought it was just an alright movie, just a little darker than I expected. And no I wouldn't want my 11DD to watch it.

I didn't like it so much. You will "get it" but it was not nearly as funny as I expected it to be. It was just okay.

I thought it was just "ok". I'm not a fan of Tim Burton movies in general so this one wasn't the greatest for me. It was funny but I wouldn't have taken a child under 12 or so. In fact there were some younger kids in the theater when we saw it and I really don't think the "got" it at all. During the sex seen one of them said "oh gross" really loud :lmao: (there isn't any nudity but the sex is implied.)

I loved the original and don't think I could bring myself to see the new one. It just looks awful.

Thx.

I liked the movie very much... except for the end (POSSIBLE SPOILERS COMING!)

IMO,the final confrontation dragged for too long, and the twist with the girl was too bizarre, even for Tim Burton... It wasn't just that it was bizarre, it came out of nowhere and didn't serve any purpose to the plot. If it did, I didn't get it.

But overall, I liked the movie. I think they did it a disservice with the trailers making it look like a comedy. It has its funny moments, but a comedy? No way.

SPOILER QUESTION COMING>>>>>>

What was the reference at the end to Elizabeth not being a real Collins? They said that, then never a mention again. I kept waiting for some sort of twist and there wasn't one.

I loved the movie and I loved the series.

To answer your question about Elizabeth, didn't she just marry into the Collins family? Maybe that's what they meant. I'm not really sure.

No, the twist at the end has to do with the teenaged daughter. She's been keeping a secret from her mom, and I do agree with the poster that said that detail was out of the blue and did not serve to forward the plotline in any way.

I think she introduced Roger (?), David's father, as her brother early in the story.

When Barnabus asked the handiman whether the Collins endure, he was told that four Collins still live. That'd be

2 Collins siblings: Elizabeth and Roger . . . I don't know what happened to Elizabeth's husband, but presumably she's not called Collins any longer . . . or perhaps she never married, which would make Caroline a Collins too

Elizabeth and Roger each have one child: Caroline and David

4 Collinses . . . plus Barnabus, once he returns
