Daphne's Babies The FINAL Update!

Thanks TiggerandBelle..........................

Wow, 80 bucks. That's a bit much for just carry-on. It's not as if they are doing any extra work, as they would if it was going cargo. 80 bucks.....................that's a lot of Mickey bars.

I saw post 87..........I don't know that much about cat coloring. It is an intriguing little cat, though. If it was a dog, I'd want to call it brindle.

just took a kitten break to squeee at your pretty babies. They really are beautiful. Even my porker of a fat black cat looked up and licked the screen. *yuck* and she sniffed a bit. VERY sweet babies.

All is well this morning, the babies are now 48 hours old. Mommy Daphne is leaving the nest occasionally now - hey Mom needs a change of scenery now and then. I guess she knows when everyone's belly is full, and they are all sleeping soundly. She even went outside on the lanai for some fresh air last night, but if she hears one cry, she is runs right back!

We all know that mother's are protective of their young.. it just goes without saying that that is the "norm", but to witness it from an animal who the day before was more interested in chasing a palmetto bug or sunning herself on the lanai, it just a cool thing from me to witness. Human moms have all kinds of time to prepare and learn, but with animals it really is all just nature.

During one absence from the nest, Tara was in the tub, and Princess our big dog wanted to visit the kittens - she very curious about these little things. It was almost like she was looking after them. She nudged one with her nose, and then laid down. I told her she had to be gentle. She does not seem to be looking at them as a tasty snack, rather with curiousity, but I still want let her visit without an escort! Maia our Yorkie is still "scared" of them. She will start to walk up to them, but if one moves the slightest bit - she jumps backward... which I think is a funny thing she does anyway when she is scared or unsure of something!

Tara's math this week seems to be fractions (Everyday Mathmatics - they jump from one concept to another all the time), so our "family" project works right into that - 3/5 are girls, 2/5 are boys - etc.! She is being incredibly attentive, and helpful. She was able to share the experience with her class as well. One thing Tara does not need practice in is PUBLIC SPEAKING - she's got the gift and will tell the story to everyone!

That photo is adorable! The kittens are smaller than teh dogs paw! I'm glad he's being gentle. I think most labs (he looks like a lab anyhow) have a real "nuture" gene built in to them.

That is an adorable picture of the dog with the kittens! Our dog would want to eat the kittens (one of our dogs, the other one would have been wonderful with newborns) and I had to really watch her with them in the first couple weeks (I kept her leashed until I could trust her with the kittens and they were about 4-5 months old--not teeny kittens on purpose.

Precious picture and the fact that the kittens are used to dogs will be a good thing when it comes to finding homes--something that we were looking for since we had dogs.

Kiara (dilute calico)112 gm start weight, today 156gm
Nala (calico) 108 start weight today 142 (she is the peanut)
Kovu (orange male) 110 154
Sara(bi) (tabby w/white face) 108 today 148
Simba (orange male) 114 today 174

So they are all between 5.0 and 6.1 oz.

The babies are really growing, and baby Simba is a real PORKER!! I re-weighed him to be sure!!!!

Daphne is roaming a little more freely when the babies are sleeping, and they stay asleep, and don't cry for her. She was out earlier this eveing, and the "sitter" went in to check on them. She was laying down again, and Kovu was trying to curl up with her, wiggling his way under her chest... she was not too sure about that!

They are just too too cute, I can't wait until their eyes open!

Awesome, they are really growing fast! Sounds like all is going really well!

I can't wait to see pics when they start opening their eyes and exploring, it's so funny how unstable they are on their feet at first.

Here's some pics of the babies on Day 3.....

Top left Kovu, Top Right Simba (had has more white on his face, and it came to a point), Middle Sarabi, Bottom left, Nala, Bottom Right Kiara - she didn't want to face the camera this morning!

I love that picture of Mom and her babies -- she looks so content!!

I want a kitten!!! Do you think they take trade-ins (like used cars). I have two slightly-used grey tabbies ...

They are so cute!! I have a calico cat, she is 11 years old. :goodvibes

Here's today's photo! Kiara and Sarabi. ALl still doing well and growing. Simba only needs 20 gms, and he will have doubled his birth weight. I never realized their growth was so rapid. I can't wait until they open their eyes and start exploring! Princess (our big dog) is getting very "protective" of them too. I'm not sure what that is about, but she growls under her breath when the Yorkie tries to go near them - not that she will get close, she is afraid of them! Princess keeps an eye on them whenever Daphne leaves the nest!

Isn't that Keara and Sarabi?

Pretty sure that's *my* Keara. I really, really like Nala, too. I just can't pick!

Simba is my fave of the boys.

:confused3 I knew that... yes it is "your" Kiara! Don't know why I typed Nala!

Simba is ALWAYS eating. I think he is going to be a "pistol"!

Since you asked ;) ;) Here's a picture that you can see Kovu and NALA's faces!

If you're serious about a couple of the kittens, maybe you can wait to see if two of the kittens seem closer to each other. I don't know if kittens tend to pair up like that--maybe Wendy can answer that.

That is absolutely great advice. Yes, they do tend to have their favorites. And some are just not interested in the others all that much. If I were in the market to get a pair, I would definitely be more concerned with their personalities than anything. I would want 2 who play well together and have similar personalities, if possible. I would hesitate to take one very docile kitten and one high energy, aggressive one. Of course they would be fine, but not necessarily the optimal circumstances for both of them. The one would be bored with their playmate and the other may be stressed by the playful one. As they get older, their personalities will really become more apparent.

We have seen vast differences in our litter of 8. Some are very social and not fearful of strangers. A few are only affectionate with people they know VERY well. Personality and social pairing is really something to consider.

I would love to have one. I really don't think I can convince dh on two. I have not yet figured out how to explain the 80 dollars for the plane. I know I'll spend way more than that on the baby once I get it home, for equipment, vets and so forth, but he doesn't know how much I spend on that stuff. He will be there for this one.................I'm thinking about it.................

Well, if you are only in the market for one, try to get the most social/affectionate one of the bunch. They are the easiest personalities to live with, IMO. And the most likely to adapt well to a family.

ETA, you know...in all honesty, unless one is totally anti-social...they will all make great pets. So, go with YOUR gut. LOL...I am the epitome of overly-analytical.

And the sad thing is that there are and will be kittens/cats where you live, if you can't justify the airfare. Of course it would be very neat to keep the kitten(s) in the DIS family, but I'm sure that you'll do what works for your family.

Yes, that's the real rub of it. But I already feel as if this baby is mine! Oh, well, I have a few weeks yet!
