Bistro de Paris

A lower heel for the female of the species tonight, as it's such a hike to (jeez they are killing me already) EPCOT. Tonight’s dinner reservation is Bistro de Paris, a repeat visit on this trip, we last ate here in Oct 05 so we're expecting great things.

Its very, very busy in EPCOT tonight. The last night of the Food and Drink festival, it’s a mosh pit trying to work our way towards France, surprisingly there are lots of young Americans out of their faces in groups everywhere, must be taking advantage of the cheap samples and the fact its relatively easy to get a drink in the dark if you are underage; in fact its like a night in Manchester.

Finally arrive at Bistro de Paris for a more refined experience. I do have to question one thing about the way this signature restaurant deals with arriving diners though. Why on earth do they leave everyone standing around the bottom of a staircase, would it be too much to ask to have some extra chairs and a proper waiting area, there are at least 4 couples standing around when we are finally taking upstairs with only a couple of chairs.

Our memories of this restaurant are excellent which is one of the reasons we are coming back to it.

We are seated at a window overlooking the lagoon and wine is quickly ordered, a lovely sharp Macon Villages.

Jackie is not having a starter, my suggestion that she order one anyway and I eat two falls on deaf ears so I order the pan seared sweetbreads and Louisiana shrimp.

Everything is cooked just to perfection, seared on the outside and caramelised yet not overdone and the sauce is reduced to a richness that is heavenly.

For her main course Jackie chooses the slowly cooked wild Halibut, this was served with a fennel fondue, a thinly diced ratatouille, baby arugula, escabeche and black olive oil sauce. Excellent fish, cooked well and a dish served with a nice balance of vegetables.

I go for the Dover Sole. This is served with fresh egg pasta and pan seared golden chantrelles and fava beans. Absolutely lovely, once again the fish was fantastically seared on the outside yet juicy and moist inside, it must have seen an extremely hot pan for all of 20secs.

Puddings consisted of Pear Belle Helene for Jackie, once we had cleared up with Henry from Dunkirk the English pronunciation for pear. My guess is he wondered why we were scared!

I chose the Chocolat Moelleux.. yummy.

Service was excellent: unrushed and unfussy as usual and our window seat allowed us to watch Illuminations during the meal. A pot of earl grey and an espresso rounded off a wonderful evening.

Total was $165.00 inc the tip and it still remains our favourite EPCOT restaurant for dinner by far.

Afterwards its lovely to walk out into an emptying EPCOT; at least it is until one starts to spot the fact that the % of binge drinkers tonight has not been managed by an equal number of Disney cleaners. Don't even go there

There's a last bus waiting for us as we walk out, timing or what :cool1:

Tomorrows our first MK day of the holiday, so lets get some rest.

Another beautifully written food review. Your descriptions and photos are killing me as it's dinner time here and I'm having leftover meatloaf! So glad your second experience at the Bistro lived up to your expectations. I, too, like the restaurant, food and atmosphere, but fear it's relaxed elegance wasn't on best display for our group this year. There were seven of us strung out along two sides of our oversized table and it made conversation difficult. I think everyone was happy with the food, though.
I have an additional complaint about the poorly planned reception area--as we were waiting to be seated upstairs, I asked if I could go on up to the ladies room. The answer was "NO!" spoken in an unnecessarily condescending tone. Of course, by the time I returned from the ladies I was allowed to use, our party had been escorted up the restricted stairway. My only thought on this most unDisney-like treatment is that somehow it fit the restaurant's theme, culturally speaking.

Really enjoyed reading your review ~ We are going to Bistro de Paris in March :)

Those extra wide tables are a problem aren't they, we found this on our last visit. I think the table we had by the window wasn't quite so big ( or did I imagine it?) so conversation wasn't a problem like before. In your situation I would have barged up the stairs without asking! Needs must. :teeth:

Our experience was also marred by the fact that we had dined at V&A's the previous evening - anything was going to be a disappointment after that. Bistro de Paris is a place I've wanted to try ever since my first visit to WDW in 1992, so, undoubtedly, my inflated expectations did nothing to help, either. I'd like to give it a second chance.

Surely that was, "NON!", Susan? ;)

Oh and, Susan - we both forgot to mention the eye candy that was our server, Anthony! :teeth:

"NON!" no doubt, but I was translating to English since this is a UK board.

Agreed about Anthony--he was good looking. He was also pleasant and personable with a conspicuous absense of condescention in his dealings with us. That along with his rather non-French name (as Kevin pointed out in his trip report) leads one to suspect his place of origin might have been Quebec.

Also a big "no doubt" about the Bistro suffering in comparison to V & A's as most places would. I do hope you give it another try. It's a restaurant we always went out of our way to include. After Dan and Jackie's review I'm ready to hit the print button, go back right now, hand Anthony D & J review and say, "I'd like these, please."

I am amazed that with myself and Kev at the table, you need any more eye candy!

Of course, Sir, you and Kevin have set the bar so very high. That's why it's remarkable that this young man even caught our attention at all.

Dan, please, forgive us for taking a step away from your beautifully written review. Then again, maybe not such a big step away--your criteria for fine dining always includes attractive surroundings, doesn't it?

True Susan, very true, and just in case I always carry a pocket mirror :teeth:

Just love these photos of food.
