Dangerous toys from Christmases past

Easy Bake Oven, Thing-Maker, Wood Burner, Leather Punch/Lacing kit, Jarts, Spirograph (with REAL push pins). Somehow we all made it through, and nobody had to tell us not to swallow the push pins!

The original Mr Potato Head used push pins meant to be used on a real potato.

But I’m sure that some kids got real firearms for Christmas.

Cap Gun. I can still smell the paper ...

They weren’t all that dangerous other than possible hearing damage. Roll caps never worked all that well for me since the advance was rarely perfect. I always preferred ring caps. I actually bought some ring caps, but it was for a cap bomb that could take roll caps or a single cap mounted on the tip. Those were hard to find, so I got 8 shot ring caps (made in Italy no less) and cut them into singles.

I didn't have any of those toys myself, but I remember some of that stuff. I remember playing w/jarts at a friend's house before.

I also remember mercury. Somebody brought it to school and was playing with it on his desk. I also remember some kids "weaponizing" Erector Set parts. They made swords out of them and were hitting each other and sword fighting. They also made projectile launching devices using rubber bands. It's amazing how any of us survived public school.

Come to think of it we did also have candy literally called Jawbreakers that were plainly choking size and adults would cheerfully hand them over smiling, all the while there was also a candy called a Lifesaver with a hole in the middle to prevent choking... so that happened.

Loved the original lawn darts - I’m still shocked that none of us had one impale our head, because we never played with them correctly - we had contests to see who could throw them the highest 🙄

While they saw us running around playing with our friends - LOL!
