Dance Moms - Help! Ballet Hair Buns

These are great tips!! I was actually about to start looking for something like this so I can put up DD's hair for Halloween! She's going to be tinkerbell and doesn't have much hair to begin with.

Judging by my quote from the Tag Fairy..I have nothing to add...LOL. I'm still working on it. LOL :rotfl:

Just another thought - one year my daughters hair was just long enough to put into a ponytail - not enough hair to wrap around it. What we learned to do was put it into a ponytail while wet then use the hairnet and wrap the loose hair several times, pin it into place and it looked just like a bun. Her hair is longer now, but we use the same technique.

My daughter's hair is just around shoulder length. We have really good luck with the donut thing (although I admit to buying mine rather than making one) and the Hairdini which I got off ebay. It's like 2 of those snap bracelets that you put the hair in between and roll it up. The instructions don't show the hair in a ponytail to start but I have found it works much better if you use a pony. A few bobby pins and a hair net and we are on our way.

You can also buy a hair scrunchie that has the fake hair, and use that to fatten up the bun. My older daughter needed one after she donated her hair, and then got a pretty short haircut, and it didn't grow back fast enough over the summer for synchronized skating the next year. We just made a (really stubby) ponytail, wrapped the scrunchie around twice, and then used the hairnet. For skating we have to sew the bun in, as no pins are allowed on the ice.

My younger daughter has been doing her own buns for dance class for about 3 years - she makes a ponytail, twists the hair into a tight rope, wraps it around the elastic, and then doubles up a hair scrunchie over it - no need for pins or hairnet for class. For competitions and recital, there's at least 20 pins, and a hairnet, and gobs of gel and spray!

Just to add a couple of thoughts. My DD10 has been dancing since she was 3 and also belongs to the dance company at her studio. She has shorter hair, which just barely makes a pony, so won't go into a bun. We buy the cute hair nets at the dance store that look crocheted and put her hair into a pony and put that around it to appear as though she has a bun then stick some bobby pins in it to hold it on.

For competitions and recital, we use fake hair that is on a ponytail holder, you can get them at any local drug or beauty suppy store. Put her hair in a pony and then put the fake hair on the pony and wind it into a bun. Put the hair colored hair net on and bobby pin and hairspray the heck out of it!!

Good luck!!

Well....I'm definitely not a "hair mom" and here's the easy, practical (yet effective) solution I've done:

Make a ponytail, wrap it around the ponytail holder, take a scrunchi that is the same color as her hair. Double loop it over the ponytail that you've wrapped up...done!

It's worked for three years so far.....

P.S. Add a little hair spray or gel for the loose hair in the front....

This is very timely! Dd's pre-ballet class starts Saturday, and I completely spaced about the buns when she decided she wanted to get her hair cut to shoulder length last week. Then I suddenly started wondering how this would work! I need to go to Target and get some supplies - the teachers did say they would demonstrate on the 1st day of class, at least. I used to do my own hair in a bun with a scrunchy sometimes, but my hair was longer then...

just wanted to add my two cents....

little hair claw clips work as well...not the teeny ones, the small ones. I start with a wet pony, wrap the hair around into the bun, put the hair net over as many times as it will go and then use the hair claws all the way around, clipping the bun to the hair against the head. If the claws are close to the hair color they disappear. This was the ONLY way I could keep my little adopted cousin's hair in a bun. She's from china and has incredibly thick hair. The hair claw clips were a LIFE SAVER! Some ballet teachers are more strict about what kinds of things can be used for buns, (mine was!) but there was no choice in this case!

you'll be a bun expert in no time!!!:goodvibes

This is the only way dd can wear it for skating .. if we wear bobby pins or hair pins they get disqualified in competition!

Do they have adult sizes? She is wearing an adult 6 1/2 or 7 (her outgrown ones are a 6). That would be great if they do and SO much cheaper than the local dance shop.

Yes, they do, and yes they are much cheaper. You can't get point there, but sounds like you won't need them for a while.
BUT< BOGO ends today. Sorry I didn't reply sooner... life gets busy, you know???

No problem. Thanks for the tip! We went to Payless yesterday and got all 3 pairs for $64. She needed 7s in all of them and I noticed that our Payless had up to size 7 1/2 in stock thankfully. I was SO dreading going to the little local dance shop and paying closer to $90 for 3 pairs.

Dance class starts tonite - she goes to back to back classes for 2 hours. Ballet is first and hip-hop is last so no telling what that ballet bun will look like by the end of the night!

I had the same problem this past Spring. I put "ballet bun" into the search engine on YouTube, and several how to videos came up.
