Is it possible to put short to medium length hair into a "ballet bun"? I am NOT a "hair Mom" at all (much to DD9's dismay) but the ballet/tap teacher this year requires the girls hair to be in a bun for all classes.

Is there an easy way to do this? I am at a total loss.

Anyone want to come to MD every Monday nite and put my DD's hair up? :rolleyes1

Is your teacher strict? Ours isn't. What we did was pull it into a pontail...but not pull it all the way through (looks more like a loop). The end of the pontail is held together by the holder. I'm not a big fan of buns.

A bun is traditional for ballet, so it's not an unusual request. It shows that your daughter is attending a school that is serious about ballet training. I wore a bun for many, many years of my life - long and shorter hair. Start with a ponytail and then wrap it around, going slowly so that you can pin it with bobby pins as you wrap. Once you have pinned all the hair around the bun, wrap a hair net around the bun to keep all the hair in place. You may have to wrap the net twice if she has shorter hair. You can pin the net in place with a bobby pin, too. Then I would spray a little hair spray to keep all the wispy hair back. Whew!! After a while it will become no big deal!! You'll be able to pull it up quickly! :) I used to use at least 20 bobby pins - maybe more! I have thick hair. ;) Good Luck!!

I used to do the same thing! For my dd who dances and now syncrho skates and must wear buns now 2 times a week LOL

Another way to do it is once you are in a pony, separate the hair in 2 sections and wrap one and pin as going around and then wrap the other. Or, my mom used to separate in 2 sections and braid it then wrap around and pin as you go. Hope that helps!

You can also make a perfect fake bun-

take a old pair of panty hose cut off the top and the feet
strech them overtop of each other on your arm and roll them off. You now have the doughnut shape.
Pull hair up into a clean ponytail - place doughnut around ponytail with the tail coming through. seperate and wrap hair and secure with pins and a hair net.
Comes in very handy for those whose hair is not long enough to wrap.

hope this helps.

These are great instructions. The only thing you might try is after you make the pony tail, just wrap it (no bobby pins) and then cover and wrap it with the hair net. Now use bobby pins and hair pins (most important to have some hair pins - hair pins really make it easier).

Boy, you typed exactly what I was going to say. My younger two daughters are dancers. Several times they have donated theri hair to Lock of Love so it was shorter then their normal. I think working with wet hair works best. Slick it back to a pony, then wrap it around itself. Then, with no pins at all, we use a hair net and wrap it over and over maybe 6 times or so, till you can't anymore. My kids' hair is thick and that holds it for class. I do use pins and hairspray for recital though. When I do I don't ever use bobby pins, hair pins hold beter (they are basically the same but longer if you aren't sure what they are.) Like I said, never a problem, actually I find it very easy.

You learn something new everyday!!!
All those years and I never used hair pins before! My mother always used bobby pins on my hair as a kid, so that's just what I continued to use when I got older and did my hair myself! It's been years since I've put my hair into a bun, so I won't be trying out that hair pin tip any time soon, but when DD needs a bun for her dance class (in a few years), I'll have to try the hair pins! :thumbsup2

I can't take credit for it, a wonderful former dance teacher of my daughter told me that at our first rectal. Actually, even for recital, I only us 3 or 4 tops in their hair and that is really only for insurance, you know, so they arn't the kid dancing their hearts out and having the bun coming out...
Take care...

Thanks so much! You guys are the greatest.

I'll pick up some hair pins (I had no clue what these were until the PP explained them) and hair nets at the store and do some "practice buns" before next week to see if we can get it down.

Now we just need to find tap, ballet and jazz shoes since of course her shoes from last year don't fit. She's so precious - she actually apologized for her feet growing.

just wanted to add my two cents....

little hair claw clips work as well...not the teeny ones, the small ones. I start with a wet pony, wrap the hair around into the bun, put the hair net over as many times as it will go and then use the hair claws all the way around, clipping the bun to the hair against the head. If the claws are close to the hair color they disappear. This was the ONLY way I could keep my little adopted cousin's hair in a bun. She's from china and has incredibly thick hair. The hair claw clips were a LIFE SAVER! Some ballet teachers are more strict about what kinds of things can be used for buns, (mine was!) but there was no choice in this case!

you'll be a bun expert in no time!!!:goodvibes

Thanks! I'll add those to my shopping list. DD has red hair so I hope I can find some clips that will blend in.

Just to let you know, we always get our shoes at Payless during their BOGO sale (Buy one get one 1/2 off) which is going on now...

Do they have adult sizes? She is wearing an adult 6 1/2 or 7 (her outgrown ones are a 6). That would be great if they do and SO much cheaper than the local dance shop.

I have a DD who's been taking ballet since she was 3 and is about to go on pointe. For her ballet bun since she has very thick, curly hair I put her hair into a pony when the hair is wet then I just pin it with hair pins (they are the ones that are more "U" shaped). Also, some of the other dance mothers also use the long bobby pins.

Oh, also find out if the teacher wants a side part - one of my DDs teacher's likes their hair side part. Oh! always put gel in it to get the wispys to stay. I buy the biggest tub at this time of the year and it lasts me about 9 months.

I think it makes the girls look so much nicer when they have their hair in a bun!

I use Bunheads brand "bobbypins" for DDs hair. I usually make a ponytail and braid it, or just start wrapping it. The bunheads hold a lot better than traditional bobbypins. You can use a hairnet, fold it over 2 or 3 times to the size of bun you want. If I use a hairnet, it takes 6 bunheads pins, and I can do it in 2 minutes.

You can get great supplies at discountdance.com

Ah the ballet bun lol.....my dd has been dancing 10 years and a few key points I learned ......

1. dirty hair is easier to put up!! (or wet)
2. use the hair nets!! I buy them in bulk lol, shoppers drug mart
3. bobby pins.......buy the good ones the cheap ones will scratch her head

This is the most important......have her to learn to put up her own hair!!!!
Believe me within a short time she wont want you doing the stage mother thing lol

My DD's dance class requires this too, my DD's hair is about 2 inches past her shoulders, I use alot of hairspray and a water bottle!!:lmao: :lmao:
P.S. I live in Maryland, so I am probably closer than anyone else, I'll come over. :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

The Bunheads hair pins are my favorite thing to do buns with. I have kind of thick hair, and love these a ton. They never bend out of shape, and they hold my hair down like crazy!

I'd also suggest spraying the ponytail with hairspray before starting. It gives more texture and hold. I've sprayed the pins before as well, and that does a good job too!
