Dan & Nancy's 20th anniv. trip report

This trip report is fantastic! I can't wait to read more!

BTW, the school bread in Norway is also great. And ANYTHING in Morocco!

School Bread???? The only bread WE had in school was as HARD as a moROCKo!!

I don't know about you...but I wish I'd gone to school in Norway.

That stuff in the cup is Rice Cream with Strawberry Topping!! My favorite all-time snack at WDW. The other one is a Cloud Horn. (I visit the Norway bakery a lot :p
Those two desserts are some of our favorites, help to wash down the coffee that is served at WDW! We have something similar to the cloud horn served at a nice local italian pastry shop on Hanover street in the north end of Boston called Mikes Pastry. Their version is called a lobster tail and is about twice the size (and four times the price probably!), but worth every penny.
Dan, you are right - I believe the Oceanic did have verandas.
As far as the food? It was so good, I gained 5 pounds just from the "sea" portion of our "land/sea" trip!!! Our waiter was not happy if we didn't clean our plates. It was almost as if thought we didn't like the food, so he would keep bringing us plates of different things and insist that we tried them.
So did I (the 5 pounds extra weight part), got to the point where I was muttering something like "Do we have to eat AGAIN" at one of the midnight buffet's on our honeymoon. Never made any midnight ANYTHING on this follow up cruise, just don't have that in me any more! I've decided to try and do some research on the older ships for comparison as part of the TR, we'll see how it goes.

This trip report is fantastic! I can't wait to read more!

BTW, the school bread in Norway is also great. And ANYTHING in Morocco!
We never thought to try Morocco before, until we got the free dining plan one trip and figured it was worth a shot. I forget the name of the signature restaurant, but hit that place with a grand gathering collection of 12 people and had a great time. Service was most excellent and the food was great. I think the server enjoyed the fact that we all wanted to try something different, and he offered up some great suggestions and we all shared. He even let Justin and his friend try on his "fez" hat. I'll try scanning that photo and adding it later, great memories from that trip.

Ahhh ---- Here it is; Justin and Jake with the fez and having a great time. Notice the plates have no leftovers? Those kids could pack it in.

Have you ever picked up the CD from Mo-Rockin; the band that plays in the Moroccon pavillion? Some pretty cool stuff; different and kind of exotic.

Awesome trip report so far! :thumbsup2

I am making some mental notes for myself for our trip next week. Fish and Chips....check. Chicken Schmammy thingy....check. Norway....double check. I can get that bread stuff and, from what I hear, Snow White hangs out there a lot. Gotta get me some Snow.

Keep the updates coming! popcorn::

I gotta warn ya Dave, that Snow White is a real heartbreaker. I had to go pull these up from our trip in 2003 when my little guy was gettin some attention from the ladies at the princess breakfast! They couldn't resist his charms even then:

Trying the trick of writing the TR in a Word document first, then copying it to the web-page to see how this goes. Sorry for the delay on getting back to this, but I always put off my term paper assignments also, and have a habit of getting distracted.

So, we left EPCOT shortly after having our desserts in Norway. We had planned to stay for Illuminations, but the early day with little to no sleep had taken it’s toll and we decided to take a leisurely stroll out through Future World while all the crowds were in the World Showcase. I love the parks at night, especially when the temperature is mild, the music is playing in the background and they have those cool illuminated paths in the concrete. It is so much more enjoyable to leave the park this way instead of the mad rush and crowd right at closing time.

We woke up fairly early the next day to enjoy a breakfast at the resort before hitting the road for our cruise! We have learned to try and pace ourselves a little better on the food, and decided to share a breakfast meal instead of each getting our own. We went to the Sassagoula Float Works and Food Factory to get a Ham and Cheese Omelet breakfast with a side of beignets and the mandatory souvenir travel mug (We use these all the time at home). They were really pushing the Princess and the Frog memorabilia at the resorts this trip.

PB120130-1.jpg

Something tells me that the beignets in N’Awleans would be much better than these, but they covered up the taste of the Nesca-crap fairly well (catching a theme here yet about the coffee?). We took the breakfast back to the room to eat while packing, and had noticed that it seemed a lot cooler, cloudy and windy. We could not wait to get on the ship and get some of that warm sun and fun in the Caribbean! Ayree, mon.

So we loaded up the temporary family sedan provided by Enterprise and hit the road. Stopped at the 7-Eleven on the way to fill up the new travel mug with some half-way decent java and to get some water bottles for the cruise. Cue the “Holiday Road” canned music and the Griswolds are on our way! No video though. I never knew there was still so much undeveloped land along the highway between Orlando and the coast. I’m thinking we need to explore that area some more the next time we head down. Aw, who am I kidding, give up valuable vacation time that could be spent at the Fort and WDW? Forgive me Walt!

Here we are approaching the end of the highway, and about to cross the bridge near the terminals, and what could that be over there in the distance? Is it, could it be? Yup! It’s our home for the next 3 nights sitting in the Port calling our name.

PB120135.jpg

We cruised on past the port area to drop off the rental at Enterprise and get the complimentary shuttle service over to the port. When we planned this, I thought it was going to be a hassle and questioned whether to just get Disney transportation or a town car. But I have to say that it was a breeze and the folks at Enterprise were great to work with. We had the shuttle to ourselves and the driver was very friendly, let us know a little about what it was like to live in Florida for retirement. We were so mesmerized by the look of the ship that I forgot to grab more shots of the area and how it looks when you arrive, but there’s probably 10,000 shots like that on the Cruise Line boards if you want to go check ‘em out. Our driver dropped us off at the curbside check in area and we were early enough that there were no crowds. We tipped the driver (don’t forget to tip the drivers folks, they need beer money too!) and then the luggage wranglers at curbside (do they call them skycaps when they check your bags for a cruise?). We headed on in with our carry on containing a few items like bathing suits and whatever in case we wanted to take a swim before the bags arrived in our stateroom on the ship. Did I mention that it was still cloudy, breezy and cool? I think it was warmer in New England when we left!

Here is our first shot of the terminal, as construction fencing was blocking the view when we approached.

PB120137.jpg

And we had to get our shot with Minnie all dolled up in her cruise gear!

PB120152-1.jpg

Nancy had gone through a lot of effort to make some custom t-shirts with iron on cast member logos on the front, designs on the sleeves and back. And the lime green Mickey logo on the front. Of course, we also have the logo that Rog created for us for a magnet on the stateroom door.

Well, I’m going to try and post this now and see if the little trick that Lisa taught me works. I really hope that I can get all this to paste right on the browser, including the code for the images….

Dan, you've got me hooked. Other than the Fort board, the DIS section I frequest most is the dining reviews. I'm a sucker for food porn.

The boarding process was fairly painless, a little hectic, but not so bad. Disney is pretty good at crowd control and herding the cattle when needed. We patiently waited for our turn to enter the ship and discovered that they have photographers along the entrance to grab a shot of you on the way in. We did not opt to purchase many of the photos, but they do a good job with it. We just decided that they didn’t have a good subject to work with in my case and took a pass! I could actually sense the excitement building as we approached our turn to enter the lobby, and they do a great job with this. I’m not sure what kind of happy juice those cast members live on, but the welcome aboard energy is great and the feeling you get walking into the lobby is hard to describe. Well worth the price of admission and a great way to get in the mood for a fun time. So much so that I forgot to take any pictures! DOH.

I think I mentioned that it was a little cool and breezy, right? Well, put yourselves ten stories in the air in a port with nothing to block the breeze and that transitions to “PRETTY DARN COLD” real fast. So, what to do? Most people try and get a quick bite to eat on deck while waiting for the sail away party, but we could tell with this weather that the indoor buffet at Parrot Cay was going to be crowded so we hot-footed it down to the buffet to get some chow. Again, they handle this real well and keep the people moving, the tables clean and the food hot. Here’s some more food shots. I discovered a handy scene selection on the new camera specifically set up for food shots, so I guess I am not alone in taking lots of these food shots!

We sat at a table with a family of 4 from New Jersey who had two little girls. Those kids were so well behaved, polite and very well spoken. They had been on cruises before and we enjoyed hearing their stories and tips on how to relax and enjoy the time. And, to top it all off, they are huge fans of cooking and food, so Nancy and the little girl carried on a great conversation about experimenting with cooking and trying different spices, food prep options, etc. This really went a long way toward easing my anxiety about what it would be like having to share dining rotations with other cruise people. I mean, what if you didn’t like the people at your table? Not to worry, people on cruise ships know how to have fun and we felt another notch of stress slipping away.

So, after adding some more calories and cholesterol, we strolled on around the ship some and decided to check out the pools.

And the shops

PB120177.jpg

I think I mentioned how cold it was, right? What is it with kids and water? No matter what the temperature, kids will hit the water like there is no tomorrow. I think Disney had just skimmed the ice off this pool and in went a couple of hearty souls! Would make my Finnish grandma proud!

PB120195.jpg

Then we strolled around the ship some more and checked out the Cove Café in the adult only area, recently renovated with glass to get ready for the upcoming Alaska cruises;

And the Walt Disney suite:

Coming up soon, our stateroom is ready, we chill out on the upper deck for the departure and then get ready for dinner!

Dan...I dont have friends because I kinda hate most people, and the few that I dont hate would NEVER have anything to do with the likes of me....but if I DID have a friends...Id want them to be like you and your wife. I know a little piece of your story...and seeing the pics of ya'll having some alone time together, well....its just OBVIOUS that ya'll are good apples. Im glad things have gotten easier for your family and that youre able to exhale a little finally.

Thanks Rog, mi amigo. Life's little lessons tend to make you step back, take stock of the situation and remember we only have a finite number of days on this ride. Each and every one of them from here on out is gonna get the attention it needs if I have anything to do with it. Now, if I could just win the lottery; mwah-ha-ha-haaaa:idea:

Nancy and I spent a few cold moments topside watching the dolphins play around the side of the ship as we began to set sail out of the channel toward the coast. We had read about them playing near the ship and I had figured it would be once we hit open water. But the dolphins would actually surface along the side of the ship right in the port area. I tried getting some video and pictures of them, but had no luck. We figured enough time had passed that we could head back and check out our stateroom on Deck 2. Like we said before, we booked a guarantee 12 category, which meant we might get bumped up a category or two if Disney managed to sell out all the category 12 staterooms. What you sacrifice for this option is not having the ability to choose your stateroom. But, seeing it was just the two of us and we did not need a lot of room, we figured a category 12 would be just fine. Lucky for us, we were assigned room 1054, a category 9 stateroom on Deck 2 with two porthole windows. This was nice because it was low on the ship in an area that was fairly quiet and only a few feet above the water line. Here is a shot of the door with all the decorations on it, including the artwork created for us by Rog. Many thanks for that Rog, it worked great, printed up on a magnetic sheet and it held to the door really well. It was kind of funny being in the room listening to people stop by and check out the artwork while we were in the room.

PB120176.jpg

Here are a few interior shots of the room, and I have to say that they are pretty good sized for a ship. I think it was a lot bigger than the room we had on Premier 20 years ago. Then again, I’m a lot bigger than I was 20 years ago too!

PB120170.jpg

A nice surprise gift from friend of ours;

PB120159.jpg

A view from the porthole area looking toward the door and bathrooms (yup – two bathrooms!)

PB120171.jpg

The bedside area:
PB120172.jpg

And the desk area with one of the few places to plug in things like cell phone chargers, laptops or a portable DVD player if you wanted. They had recently refurbished the ship and changed to new flat panel TVs that were pretty decent. Then again, who wants to spend much time watching TV when you are on a cruise!

PB120173.jpg

We took some time unpacking, watched the information channel to learn a little about the ship, read the Navigators and waited for our turn at the safety assembly. Per usual, there will always be someone who arrives late, unprepared and not wearing the lifejackets like they are supposed to. I got the guy on video (no, NOT ME!). The castmembers were pretty decent about it, but most of the other guests were a little ticked off because they had to wait for this guy to show up. Here we are in our finest lifesaving apparel looking kind of fashionable I must say:

PB120226.jpg

So, now that we were properly trained on how to drown in an organized fashion, we could go get ready for the most important part of the cruise – MORE FOOD! Tonight we dine at Animators Palate and get to meet our tablemates and official servers who will be with us for the remainder of the cruise. Here is another Glam shot of Nancy all decked out and waiting just outside Animator’s:

PB120236.jpg

We went for early seating because I tend to need to eat long before I go to sleep, so I feared we would be dining with lots of loud kids that weren’t ours. Not to be, they assigned us to a table with two other couples. One couple had been on many cruises and the other couple were on a ship for their first time. Here are some more food porn shots for those who can’t wait to go on their next cruise. Nancy got the soup for a starter:

PB120238.jpg

And I got a tomato salad which was very tasty with fresh ground pepper on it, tasted like summer:

PB120239.jpg

I followed up with beef for the main course:

PB120240.jpg

I either forgot to get a photo of Nancy’s meal or I didn’t load it up to my photobucket account. Either way, we’ll just have to imagine what sort of tasty nosh she had unless I can find it on the PC and edit this later! However, she did have a taste of some delicious ice wine:

PB120243.jpg

On to dessert! I had the apple crumble with ice cream on it:

PB120245.jpg

And Nancy had the desert sampler:

PB120246.jpg

The meal was fantastic, and my dessert ended up being much better than the dessert sampler that Nancy chose. The ice wine was really good, but at $11 per glass, not something we were going to have too often. So, completely sated, we ambled on out of Animators Palate to take in the show, which was completely packed. The cast members did some amazing performances considering that we had entered the Gulf Stream and the ship was beginning to crest a few waves. Nothing too dramatic, but I would not want to run around on a stage with that motion. Finally, we headed back to the room to let the waves rock us to sleep, in a completely darkened room (no street lights shining in, no night lights in the kids rooms, nothing but blissful peace and quiet and about half a dozen big fluffy pillows on a king sized bed. So ended our first day on the cruise, and we were looking forward to a relaxing day on the ship the next day while docked in Nassau.

This is great Dan, with all the talk about cruising this is very informative.

Dan, what a awesome report and pics, :thumbsup2
Maybe it's just me, but your wife reminds me of Patricia Heaton.
