My BFF has a child with Autism. He is going to a DAN doctor and they have already started changing his diet. Tell me your success stories if you have them. I would love to hear them!

It's been a few years since we saw a DAN dr. but the experience was really good for us. He was very knowledgable and helpful. He did lots of testing and gave us some really helpful advice. We changed our son's diet and it did help, but our son would sneak food so it became almost impossible to adhere to it. So we found that using enzymes before meals was incredibly helpful.

I still use information that we learned from the doctor, even after several years of not having seen him.

Hope the diet is helpful...it's REALLY hard to begin with but does get easier.

There are some excellent threads here where some kids are helped by being gluten and cassein free. I never heard of the DAN Diet but have heard of the Gluten-Free, Casein-Free Diet or GFCF which I am on sort of as I am GF adn no dairy, soy, eggs or chocolate.

I have heard of improvements in autistic kids who have dietary changes. I would recommend it but remind you that kids love gluten and dairy filled foods. I get cravings for food I am allergic to and that is a problem with kids on the GFCF diets. If the kid does sneak a cookie or accidently the diet is broken then do not worry or get upset. Just go back and keep at it.

Being GFCF means me not having mac and cheese, most fast food, burritos, donuts, pastires, cakes, donuts, fried shrimp and corn dogs, ooh, sigh, no more junk food, lol.. My skin cleared up after getting rid of my alergens.

Also, Yahoo groups has two pretty big groups- one is gfcf kids, the other is the TACA group, there are tons of messages so be prepared, but I have found them to be a great resource.

We've only been to the DAN once, because he doesn't take insurance *plus* he's about two hours away. But I was pleased, because he told me what I knew was the right answer, that everyone else didn't listen to me. He made suggestions and started us on Nystatin for yeast, plus the usual probiotics, enzymes, gfcf and rotation, etc etc.

The Nystatin cleared up the eczema and asthma in about a week, and we knew we were onto something.

Our local family dr has been very receptive. We've had lab work done since then that confirmed many many IgG food allergies, a huge yeast overgrowth (so the DAN was right!), all sorts of other stuff. She's not a DAN but she listens and is willing to try things if they are reasonable, and hearing what the DAN told me plus the result of the Nystatin and the lab work, she's been very willing and cooperative.

I don't know when we'll actually be able to get back to the DAN but he started us down the right path. As long as I'm able to keep learning, and our doctor is willing to listen, and interpret the stuff I don't understand ;) ... there are people that do it on their own with no support... I would still recommend seeing a DAN at least once, though, it did really help us out.
