Dame Julie Andrews comeback concert in London this past weekend

Hey Everyone, I had heard that Julie Andrews was performing this past weekend for the first time in 30 years in Great Britain, and I was curious to hear how it went. It sounds like the concert is getting mixed reviews.

The most negative reviews are calling it a "car-crash", comparing it to Whitney Houston's disastrous comeback attempt, and reporting that fans are demanding their money back.

The most positive reviews are saying she may have lost her 4 octave singing voice but not her star quality, warmth, and good manners.

I think it was very brave of her to try this. But I think it very unfair to compare her to Whitney Houston. Julie Andrews is a STAR and a Lady in every sense of the words. And I would go see her on stage in a New York minute.

Anyone willing to pay 140 pounds for a ticket to see Julie Andrews is probably aware that she hasnt really sang in many years. Expecting her to return to the voice of her youth is unrealistic at best.

In the article it mentioned that she had considered a world tour.

Just want you all to know that if that occurs....I'll pay 140 pounds to watch Julie Andrews eat toast.

I would buy a ticket to see Julie Andrews mime the phone book.

That being said, I can understand going to a concert with a certain set of (albeit unrealistic) expectations, and being disappointed that it was more of a tribute concert than anything else.

Andrews' medical malpractice case received a LOT of attention, and her subsequent recovery has, as well. I think a lot of fans went there expecting her to sing for several hours, and when that didn't happen, they lost sight of the performer, and got caught up in the (lack of) performance.

I actually think it's pretty cool she was reading a childrens book she co-wrote with her daughter. I love the work she is doing to help promote childrens literacy.

While I don't think the comparison to Whitney Houston is appropriate, I can kind of see where it comes from since Whitney just had the comeback attempt in England recently. Again, it's not a valid comparison at all, but I see where it comes from by the reporters.

Whitney has always had horrible pitch (most of which got fixed in post production). She kills my classically trained ears.

With any physical talent and yes, singing is physical, workouts are required to keep a consistent level of performance and time does take a toll on you (unless you are Bud Herseth). I would love to go hear her in concert. As Kevin said, I would pay money to watch her eat toast.

Surgery notwithstanding, the fact that she's in her 70's would be reason enough for her voice not to be the same. I paid full price to see Joan Baez in concert a few years ago, and she had laryngitis. But... I was still in the same room with Joan Baez, and even ill, she didn't sound all that bad. I didn't complain... although I do joke around now that I saw her with a cold. =)

I recently heard Julie Andrews sing somewhere...on a talk show, not a whole song, but she didn't sound that bad...not bad at all. Her voice was sadly, not the same, but it wasn't painful to listen to either. I would definitely pay to hear her perform...or eat toast, if she choose to do that instead. I expect she knows her limitations now, whereas Whitney clearly does not. I also imagine Julie Andrews doesn't randomly wander off stage or stop mid-song to whine and make excuses.

Our Tivo picked up Eloise at Christmas as a suggestion back in December. We watched almost the whole movie before realizing Julie Andrews was Nanny. Julie Andrews is a delight.

Would have loved to see her in concert. £140 would be pricey, but a once in a lifetime experience.
