I first saw the ad mentioned here and after seeing it on TV, I wrote a letter of complaint to Dairy Queen. It was my first complaint letter. Enough other people must have complained because this was in the Ottawa Sun today.

DQ pulls ad of hanging boy

By CP

TORONTO -- Dairy Queen is pulling a controversial TV commercial showing a young boy being hung on a hook.

The ad sparked outrage, especially in the Chatham area, because it is similar to an incident that killed a 10-year-old boy in the southwestern Ontario city nine years ago.

Myles Neuts died in hospital after bullies hung him by his clothes from a coat hook in a school washroom.

"Dairy Queen Canada understands that some in the Chatham area were uncomfortable with the content of this ad, as a result of a tragedy in that community several years ago," the company says.

Is this the one where the kid's brother stole his blizzard and the kid on the hook tells the dad and then the dad does the same thing to the older brother?

I remember the Chatham boy. Tragic story.

Yes that is the commerical LadyRedd.

I didn't know about the earlier tragic incident, but that commercial totally creeped me out... just not good marketing.

Thank goodness they're finally going to pull it off the air. I also fail to see how bullying is a good marketing strategy :confused3 In fact, lots of schools in Southern Ontario don't even put coat hooks in the bathrooms anymore (and this has started transferring over to mall bathrooms too now). So sad that DQ would think that commercial was appropriate.

If that's the ad I think it was, I thought it was funny.

Wow, I've seen that commercial multiple times and the "bullying" aspect of it never crossed my mind.

Doesn't seem like it was an appropriate commercial at all, of ocurse I have never seen it so I have no right to judge. Glad it was pulled though.

It never bothered me. I think some people are a little too sensitive. :confused3

Well, I mean, its hard to say someone is too sensitive. This was an event that did effect these people, a child died. If I saw it I would not have given it a second thought, but I had not known of this incident. I mean it all depends on experience, and how an individual dealt with it and how personal it was.

I am not at all a fan of censroship, but I understand why they were upset.

I'm in the "People are a little too sensitive" camp on this one.

ITA...it's like the car comercial where the guy base jumps off the cliff in a business suit. There were a lot of complaints that it was making fun/bring back the horror etc of 9/11.
There are plenty of movies/shows/comercials that show someone jumping off a bridge. Should those scenes be banned because some people have died jumping of off bridges? What about the car comercials where they are driving really fast and dangerously? should they all be pulled because it might remind someone of a horrible car accident?

Even without knowing about the other incident, bullying does not equal funny to me. Nor does it make me want to buy your ice cream.

It never occurred to me that it was in any way bullying. I was actually surprised that it bothered anyone.

Then nothing is funny because everything has hurt someone in some way at some time.

Do you guys remember the "Leggo my Eggo" commercials, though, where people were stealing waffles from family members? That could be considered bullying, too, if you want to get right down to it.

What is wrong with the commercial????

Not hilarious, but certainly nothing to make a big deal over.

I've been trying to find out what happened to this boy who was killed. How was he hung up? rom what I've been able to find online, it's a bit unclear exactly as to what happened.
