My DD7 has asked for the Dairy Queen Blizzard maker for xmas so she can make her own ice cream. I have seen it for $15 which is not bad but the refills seem a bit expensive.

I showed her the ice cream maker that is the ball that you roll around to make ice cream and she said that would be okay too.

Does anyone one have either of these? If you have something else that isn't too pricey please let me know. I just want something easy to use that makes decent ice cream.

We have the ball you shake and roll. We use it for camping. The ice cream is delicious and you use regular ingredients, no mixes. But, it gets so cold while making it. My husband and my friend's husband take turns doing it and sometimes wear gloves. And when it's done you have to do a lot of scraping because quite a bit gets frozen to the sides. A kid could do it and enjoy it but might need help.

Someone gave my DD12 one of those balls years ago when she was so little she couldn't do it. You really have to move the ball around for quite a bit of time and effort. Too much effort and not enough reward. My daughter ended up sadly asking, "Couldn't we just BUY the ice cream next time?":rotfl:

I'd vote for the DQ machines.

Has anyone ever used the Blizzard Maker? I am wondering what the 'ice cream' is like and is made of?

My DS6 would love an Easy Bake Oven. The new one with the heating element is purple and covered with flowers though lol. When will the Easy Bake people wisen up and realize boys want to bake cakes too?

My DD has the DQ Blizzard maker. It's a pain! You need to stand there and turn the knob for about 2 mins. We take turns when we use it. It makes a tiny cup full. Barely enough for one person. If she had a friend over they would need to make another batch. The ice cream is very sweet and tastes artificial. It's a powder you mix with milk or cream. One the outside you use ice and salt like a real ice cream maker. I've only seen it come in vanilla flavor. It also comes with mix ins but we used our own. Pop rocks didn't sound good. IMHO it is a waste of money. I think that's why it has dropped in price. DD asked for it for her birthday last year(sept) we used it a few times and it now sits in her room. We still have mix left to use up.

I ended up buying my DD an electric ice cream maker at Walmart for around $20-$30. She likes it better. She has ice cream parties with her friends. I like it better because we use real ingredients and can make different flavors.

HTH if you have questions feel free to ask.

My DD is 17 and works at DQ making REAL blizzards. I joked about buying this toy for her for Christmas but I don't think she would laugh too much!:lmao: Don't worry, I'm not going to really do it...

I would just get a regular ice cream maker to make homemade ice cream. It will be much yummier than the Blizzard one and you can make any kind of ice cream you like. You can get mixes or you can make it homemade. My mom has an old ice cream maker with a hand crank. It's yummy but a lot of work. An electric one would be easier!

Oh, and you can make homemade ice cream using ziplock bags and ice and rock salt. Our science class does it as a lab on heat transfer. It's really cool and yummy, too!

Thanks for the quick responses! It looks like the Blizzard maker is out.

Do you happen to know which brand you have? I checked out the Walmart site and there is a few different brands for around $25.

That thing is a PAIN and messy. I wouldn't waste my money on it. Of course last Christmas my 5 year old NEEDED it, so I ran all over town trying to get one and I wish I hadn't wasted all the money on it. If you want to make your own ice cream, pay a little more and get a nice electric one!

My kids got the blizzard maker last year for Christmas. They used it 1 time. like a previous poster said it made this tiny cup of ice cream that was gross...We definitely wasted our money.

My sister adds juice or pop to her's in the summer so she can make slushie drinks.

We have the 25 dollar electric one from Wal-mart. It does work, but beware it is extremely LOUD. I make all our ice cream- it takes sweetened condensed milk, half and half, and whipping cream to make vanilla. Once in the freezer it will get very hard. I can't tell you how long it will stay fresh in the freezer because I can't keep it around here for more than a few days!

I bought the Blizzard Maker for my Grandson for this Christmas. I know it is a waste of money, but I got it because I know it will drive my DIL crazy!!!! Well worth the money!

:rotfl2: my MIL has bought annoying gifts on purpose just to irritate me. But it backfired on her because I'm smarter than she is. When my DD got that irritating xylophone thing that sings when she was 4 or 5 I was quick to say to DD "Hey, you got a lot of Christmas presents, why don't you leave a few of them here so you have things to play with while you are here??" and then suggested a few to keep at Grandmas, including the irritating xylophone thing. :rotfl2: Somehow, when DD went over there, Grandma never suggested playing with it.

That DQ blizzard maker looks AWFUL. My 6 year old has his little heart set on it for Christmas so guess what I bought! LOL It's that darn commercial makes it look great. I tried to talk him into a real ice cream maker but, he wasn't having any of that.
We got a deal on it so it will be worth it to see his little face.

Kids want what they want and if you don't get it for them they are heartbroken. I was lucky DD got it from one of her friends for her birthday.

I hope he is able to get some enjoyment out of it. At least you will give your arms a workout right?

Thanks for all the replies.

I think I will just keep the Blizzard maker since it was only $15 and get the Walmart one as a family gift from Santa.

We have 2 actually. The one we use at home is the Nostalgia 4qt. and the one we have in the camper is a Rival or maybe a Hamilton Beach. The camper is in strorage so I can't go and look. We use them both all the time. The one in the camper makes a smaller batch 1-2 qts.

I would get a nice electric one and buy some DQ stickers. Throw them on the outside of the machine and "bam" a DQ Blizzard Maker. :thumbsup2
