I've recently found out that I'm lactose intolerant and cannot have dairy. The Lactaid pills do not work for me so I have to try and avoid dairy. I plan on telling the restaurants in advance so they can accomodate me, but some of our meals will obviously be counter service. Does anyone out there have any tips or experiences to share on this?? Thanks! :)

One of my travel companions is not only lactose intolerant, but also allergic to wheat and wheat products. We've been to WDW together twice now, and both times she was accomodated completely. The lactose intolerance is pretty easy to deal with--actually much more so than the wheat alergy--you wouldn't believe the things with wheat in them!

At any rate, also took my lactose intolerant FIL once, and he had no problem eating well the entire trip either. In fact he gained eight pounds in a week LOL!

If you have other questions you might want to try the DisAbilities board instead--tons of helpful people over there with ots of allergy type experiences.

Look over the menus to see where you will most likely eat then you can call WDW Dining to find out for sure what is safe for you. I have several food allergies and this has worked out well for me. WDW is great at assisting with this type of thing.

swankybeth,

You might be interested in this if you can't do dairy but still crave it...

Please double check as I am no authority but it is my understanding that Dole Whips are non-dairy.

I am also lactose intolerant and can't use the supplements. Just went to WDW in May and I had no problems at all! No matter where we ate the wait staff was always very knowledgeable about how things were prepared and when they weren't they did not hesitate to run back to the kitchen and check it out. They also never refused me a substitute for something, like using margarine in place of butter, leaving cheese off a salad/chicken/sandwich or replacing a dairy laden side dish with something else. One thing that is a nice consolation is that when everyone else is eating ice cream from the many vendors in the parks u can enjoy the frozen chocolate covered bananas (dairy free!!). The first few months of your intolerance will be hard..u won't believe the things that have dairy in them (like some brands of hot dogs for instance), but once you've read millions of labels and learn to look for kosher meats and the word PAREVE ont he label it will get easier (I'm on my 13th dairy free year!!). If you'd like help with some substitutes and things like that I've used over the years just email me. Believe me, everyone balks at my tofu cheese and rice milk but ya gotta do what ya gotta do and after awhile the taste is actually quite good! (my kids won't stay away from my tofu ice cream!!). Good luck!!
