I'm thinking of purchasing the d60 (first time digital and figured the price was right to try it out) and I know it comes with a kit lense.

I was wondering if the lense that comes as a kit lense on the d90 would be a good addition for the d60 or would it be too heavy for such a light weight camera?

(The zoom range is compatible with what I usually use on my FM2 but I was told the old lenses won't work on the D60).

Any lens you could put on the D90, you can put on the D60...the only major difference is that all autofocus lenses (like AF-D) will focus on the D90, but not the D60. I believe the kit lens that comes with the D90 is the 18-105mm. I have the D60 and have an 18-200mm VR on it right now as my "walkaround" lens and don't think it's heavy at all. I know there are others on here with small dSLR bodies who have things like the 70-200mm f/2.8 on there sometimes as well...so the possibilities are endless!! If you do get the D60--enjoy, I've had a great time with mine over the past few months.:thumbsup2

I have the 18-105 and it's not heavy at all really. Lighter then 18-200 and I used that on my D40 forever and never had an issue. If you have the choice between the 18-55mm kit lens and 18-105mm I'd definitely go for the 18-105mm. It has a nice range and IMO pretty sharp. Much sharper then the basic 18-55mm.

The kit comes with 18-55 (only $50 off for body only vs. with the kit lense), but I was thinking of getting the 18-105 as well. I assume that one would focus on the D60?

This digital stuff is overwhelming, that's why I've stuck with the FM2 for so long!

Yep--the 18-105mm will autofocus with the D60. Any lenses with an AF-S or AF-I will autofocus with it. For future reference, here is a link for a list of all fully-compatible lenses with the D40, D40x and D60 but be aware, fully compatible just means they will autofocus as well, however there are LOTS of other AF lenses that will work, you just have to manually focus (i.e. the 50mm f/1.8 AF-D, the 60mm f/2.8 AF-D, etc.) It is really pretty easy to focus manually with the D60, so try not to rule out those lenses as well!

Also - there are lots of varying opinions about the 18-200mm VR (and wenrob will disagree with me) but I have been through some ups and downs with this lens and recently considered trading it in...but in the end, I'm SO HAPPY I kept it. It's great as a walkaround lens, it is pretty sharp (not as tack sharp as some other lenses but for the most part, pretty sharp until you get to its longest reach). It's a little pricey, but for the most part I have found that on day trips when I don't feel like carting around a bag of lenses, this choice is great. I also think the VR works like a charm. I didn't get a tripod until recently and was very impressed, only having to do a little sharpening in the editing process.

There are lots of people on this board that seem to love their 18-200mm VR and some of those who don't...it's up to you to do some research and make a decision, but it gets my vote! :thumbsup2
