D5100 or T3i

Mine did come on Wednesday but I didn't get a chance to try and do anything with it till last night. I was able to attach the neck strap and set the date and time before I needed help!. I'm definitely overwhelmed and the owners manual is like reading a foreign language. I'm reading the two books I bought and going to a friend's house for help tonight. I may try the YouTube video thing too. How's it going for you so far? Have you been able to get some good pics yet?

I'm still overwhelmed!! Once I think that I understand something, I end up taking a picture that is either over exposed or under exposed or blurry or whatever!! :rotfl2: But I'm sure that it will get better the more that I practice! I've also been trying to do research on the boards about settings for fireworks, MSEP, indoor rides, etc. I plan to bring a cheat sheet with me when I go in August!! :thumbsup2

Depending on your camera, you may be able to "bracket", that is, take 3 shots in rapid succession, but with varying aperture settings. That should ensure you get at least one good one per set.

Not disagreeing with you that bracketing could help a new user, but I would suggest bracketing by varying the shutter speed instead of the aperture. Doing the aperture would vary the DOF and for a beginner that could mean the difference between a perfect shot and a perfectly exposed shot that missed the focus and is useless.
