Has anyone broken down and ordered them a new Nikon lately. I spoke to a dealer in NY the other day and was told that Nikon had slowed the original delivery date on the D4 to early March rather than mid February.

I read that some of the Pros' like Joe McNally have gotten theirs but you would expect that.

My local vendor said it would be late March before they saw any D800's

Just wondering what other may have done?

Nope... not tempted this time around.

The D4 (anything in that series) will always be out of the question, I don't make money with photography, so it's just way too expensive to justify.

As for the D800/e... I'm still awfully happy with the D700. Any improvements in the D800/e aren't enough to tempt me.

What's much more interesting to me is the Tokina 16-28 2.8. An alternative to Nikon on the wide end, for full frame. Now to convince the husband that I need it... ;)

What are you shooting with now? Are you definitely getting a D800?

I have been looking at both. I currently have a D7000. Not looking to replace it but adding a full frame into the bag. I do not make money taking photos but have been into it for over 30 years. I like the D4 and the D8000/e but I am thinking of waiting until next year and save up for the D4. I like it that much better and am willing to wait.

Would love to see photos if you end up with either (D800 or D4!) in your hands!

Also, hope my previous comment didn't come off judgmental in any way... I couldn't justify a D4 for me personally, on our income! But for other hobbyists it could make sense. :goodvibes

I didn't even pay attention to the D4 b/c it's so far out of reach for me... how do the specs compare to the D800?

The biggest change on the D4 is it has a native ISO of 100 to 12800. That alone is amazing. You can now push that to over 200,000!!!!!!!! The D4 will also shoot up to 10fps. New processing engine and new storage system. They say the buffer can hold up to 100 images?

I also have been taking pictures since high school that next year will be 40 yrs ago.

I will only say at this point that I have collected the trifecta of the full frame lenses over the past two years. I have the 70-200 2.8, the 24-70 2.8 and the 14-24 2.8. I would not have made that investement in glass to shoot DX. It will be late March or April before I have anything in my hand. A used D700 will be my second body. This stuff takes real planning!

I am not trying to be secrective but until I have somethng in my hand I just do not want to jinx myself.

Check out Joe McNally's blog to see how impressive the high ISO is on the D4!
Of course he also knows how to make a camera sing!

Ah yes... the stuff dreams are made of! Definitely sounds like an impressive camera.

I won't ask more questions since you don't want to jinx yourself. ;)

It did not come across as judgmental in any way. I just wish I could get it now:sad2::sad2:

If I had giant piles of money, I'd get both — the D800 for landscapes, as I shoot lots of that — and the D4 for most everything else.

Probably good I can't afford it — my resultant constant maniacal laughter would probably freak people out.
