At the end of August my son and I are having a short 3-night guys-only vacation at HHI. We're both avid cyclists although we do most of our riding in a more rural setting. How practical is it for us to leave the car parked and just cycle around the island to the beach, restaurants, etc, ..? Are there places to lock bikes everywhere?

When we were there in May we rode our bikes alot, if you are avid riders then the distances will mean nothing :) if was harder for us since we don't ride except really on vacation. Everwhere we went there were always bike racks etc to lock up you bikes, we rode to the beach, grocery stores, mall, around the pier area, etc with no problems. Spent alot of time on the bikes. Hope this helps. There are bike paths everywhere, and an access area under the highway to the beach side of the road.

HH is about the most user friendly place I've seen for cycling. If your up to the distances, and it seems you likely are, you can hit almost all of the island on bike paths and certainly the areas you'd want to go. Do a search on the internet for the HH bike paths, I know I've seen maps before. You'll have to pay for the Sea Pines area on a daily basis.

Great that's what I was hoping to hear. We typically go for 25 to 30 mile rides on roads with rolling hills so a more casual ride around HHI should be fine.

I've seen the Sea Pines entry fee mentioned in some posts but not much more. How much is it per person? Do any of the businesses rebate the entry fee back?

I'm not sure the bike fee, Last I saw it was $5 per car. We get free bike passes when we stay at Grande Ocean. If you rent, ask if they have sea pines bike passes. Just be aware that the paths are made more for recreation, they are not they type that are conducive to speed. Most rental bikes are the one speed cruisers.

Since it's a short stay we had planned on getting the bikes right at the DVC resort. I know the bikes are cruisers and that's okay. We will likely do one ride around the island to see everything but the rest of the time on the bikes will just be to get between A and B.

There is no bike fee to get into Sea Pines or most of the other plantations. You can also ride the beaches and access any of the plantations via that route.

You'll have no problem biking as much as you'd like at HH. Sea Pines has the greatest number of paved walkways, but the entire island is very bike friendly.

Enjoy! :)

That has not been my experience. We've been turned away or else would have had to pay a fee at the secondary gate. Grande Ocean gets X number of bicycle passes per week. This was true as of 2 summers ago. I'm sure enforcement is variable.

HHI is the most bike friendly place I've ever been!! Just love all the bike paths all over the island. And for you OP, it will be easy riding as there are no hills!

$3 a bike isn't bad but I wouldn't want to pay the car fee in the same day so we'll have to do some thinking about the restaurants that are on SP property.

I have to admit the concept of gated communities seems strange to me. We don't have anything on this scale in Canada. Are there other areas that you need to pay to enter? For example Palmetto Dunes looks like it has some nice bike trails too.

I don't think any of the others charge but they would require an appropriate reason to enter. See if the bike rental at the resort has passes.
