cutting cable?

thankfully, they did take it back and return my money.

We live about 25 miles away from the channels' stations, but we also live in a bit of a dip/hill and have 80 ft. trees surrounding our house.

So, I am not sure distance is as much of a barrier as obstructions.

That's what I really liked about those sites - they factor that in as well. Our address, when typed in, is down a huge dropoff behind the physical house. I was able to move the cursor around so that I could find out what I'd get ground level, in the room I wanted to put the antenna in. Down the hill, we'd have needed an antenna in the attic at bare minimum. At the very least, its a good research tool to determine what you'd need to get.

But I do understand that you may still need an antenna placed higher up no matter what. Fortunately, they also make attic antennas that are pretty strong, so some people don't have to invest in a roof antenna. The downside to either, of course, is that you have to have splitters if you've got more than one TV. :)

We are getting ready to dump cable. DH tested out the atenna which he put in the attic. Amazing how clear the TV come in. I think the only thing I'm going to miss is my DIY shows. I do love them so. :(

We cut cable years ago before Neflix streaming and such things were commonly used. We now have Netfilx streaming for the kids to use during the cold winter months. They get so frustrated when they visit my parents who have regular TV with commercials. I personally love not having so many loud, annoying commercials!

We've never had cable. There is only one provider in our area and they are outrageously expensive. Our Internet alone is $60 (GAG!)! Most of the people I know that have the cable/phone/Internet bundle pay $200+ per month. I just can't see paying that so we've never had it.

We got Netflix a couple of years ago and we just have an old school rabbit ears antenna. We get 12 channels and have a nice variety of programming to watch. Netflix is used almost daily with DD.

The thing I really love about not having cable is that DD is not exposed to all the crap marketed to kids. She watches PBS Family and Netflix...no commercials!

I would LOVE to get rid of cable, but DH is addicted to sports, so that's not gonna happen anytime soon. Netflix is wonderful, but I also watch Hulu and YouTube from time to time. I've considered Amazon, too, but I haven't tried it, yet.

Ok, for those of you that have done it...how have you made it work? hulu? netflix?

We cut for 5 months. We used Hulu Plus and Netflix. DH's work pays for our internet since he works from home, so that was a plus.

Anyway, we eventually went back to cable because we missed the disney channel and the convenience of DVR.

I typed in my address too and it didn't show that it would be a problem, but it was.

I don't think I know how to move the curser around though.....I just put in my address.

BTW: We have a rooftop antenna that has never been mounted. I have asked DH to mount it and use our cable wires to connect to our indoor TVs as a Christmas gift! It has been on a list of things to do for months! I think that will help tremendously and connect to all of our TVs.

We cut the cable/satellite about 2 years ago. We stream Netflix and Hulu ($8/mo each)and there are occasional shows we buy from Amazon On Demand. It works really well for us, but we aren't sports people. I know very few sports-oriented folks who could cut out cable/satellite and still be happy.

We have Netflix and Hulu Plus. I like Netflix the best but right now we are having issues with it streaming properly. The neighbors are having the same problem. We can both still use our other service. Hulu is streaming fine and they are using Amazon but we miss Netlfix. Wish we could figure out what is going on with them.

I LOVE Netflix for older stuff, but if you're a TV person you need Hulu+. Every show I watch is available the next day (and let's just say my TV watching is exorbitant). I wasn't sure I could live without cable so we added Hulu+ in addition to Netflix to try it. I was ready to cut everything but basic cable (my 2 year old would melt down without Mickey Mouse Clubhouse! but when we called to cancel they needed my inlaws permission to switch (we just bought their house and they bought ours). Next thing I know, they're paying our cable and Internet for a year! In addition to what we already had, we now have HBO! Apparently they got a serious deal on paying for 2 houses over just 1.

Sigh, most shows I watch are NOT on Hulu+. Most shows I watch are on CBS. CBS current shows are not available on Hulu+. Just be aware. That is why I ended up canceling my Hulu account.

I had Netflix but cancelled it because the streaming where I lived was terrible. It would cut out several times in the middle of the program. I figure in another few years, we might try to eliminate cable, but our area is just not there yet.

dh wants to go with apple tv (streaming service) but we have kindles, and pay for Amazon Prime - which isnt available on apple tv - but it is available on Roku,

there is a lot of research involved in dropping cable, and keeping internet! (and I was watching Anderson Cooper, he talked about loving his apple tv!)

I want to be able to watch Hockey (:rolleyes1) and football - as well as my Reality TV shows - The Amazing Race and Survivor (which are cbs shows of course!) and I also enjoy the PBS Channel called Create... but I think we could drop out of cable, just change my ways and the morning shows, I am a flipper, I watch GMA, Today, and The CBS Morning Show!

I currently have 2 roku boxes in the mail coming my way. When they arrive my home phone and cable are going bye, bye. My current bill for home phone, cable, and internet is around $135.00. Going to 30mg internet for $49.99 and $8.00 for netflix, I should save around $77.00 per month. We have good OTA reception at my home so I will have 25+ OTA digital channels. Thats $77 more dollars towards the mortgage each month!! :cheer2:
