Mickey Mouse and Pluto! (on disneyshopping.com - search "harness buddy") Of course, they're about 3x the price of the puppy/bear etc from Target, but they ARE Disney!!! ($39.95 :scared1:)

This is not to start yet another harness or don't harness debate. This is simply sharing that there are some cute Disney ones out now. ;)

Edited to add: Pooh, Tigger and Minnie too!

So cute! Why do they come out with the really good stuff right after my kids grow out of it?:confused3

I KNOW!!! Ethan had the bear from Target - not ugly by any means, but not as cute as these! And we pretty much only used it @ Disney.

bhwhiz - if they are avail @ BRU for $15 less, that would be great for those who want one! Thanks for sharing that info. :)

Our local hospital had a youngster who was critically injured due to wearing a harness. The doctor in ER said it is more common than most people realize. Regardless of what kind of behavior/safety tools any of we parents use, they all require due diligence.

How on earth did the harness cause critical illness? I can't imagine. I am sure it is a lot more accidents due to toddlers running off and getting hurt.

I'd guess the parents weren't supervising the kiddo, right? Too bad he/she was hurt though. As always it is important for the parents to be alert all the time with their children - not just regarding harness use!

In the instance where the child was critically hurt, the end of the harness was taken somehow into something mechanical causing the child to hit his/her head. Parents were present. The other times have been where the child has been jerked backwards or sideways causing injury which the same injuries can occur with a caregiver pulling the child.

The post earlier was only to let people know that harnesses can portray a false sense of security. Any device, even car seats, are not perfect. Parental supervision is not perfect even the most ideal circumstances. As a parent, I have to be diligent and prepared as every second passes wherever my child is - even in a stroller. Everyone enjoy their trips!!

Well, to me that is the parents/adults fault. The end of the harness should never be left loose. It should always be in an adult's hand. If they had been holding it then it wouldn't have ended up caught in something. If you want to let the child wander you can either remove the harness/backpack completely or remove the strap (they can all be detached). You don't just let them run dragging the strap. I'm still very sorry to hear it happened - and I'm sure the parents are hurting emotionally also (at least I know I would be if I had been in that situation). I realize you were just sharing a word of caution and I agree completely. It's like anything - you MUST use common sense. It's absurd all the warning notices they have to put on things because our society doesn't think first...

And just for a chuckle:

Manufacturers of consumer products have to be liberal with the warning labels these days, lest they get sued. But for these, it's hard to know whether the company is being outright stupid or if they're simply targeting the most brain dead dumb among us.

In summary, read the paper that comes with the backpack. I'm positive it will say to not let the child wander with the strap hanging loose. If I remember right from my bear one, it also mentioned the tripping hazard (if the child darts in front of people they could trip on the strap between child and adult) etc.

SO cute!! I wish it just a had a pic of Mickey on it, instead of being the stuffed animal kind. :( I feel like those are way too hot for the summer FL heat...especially the way my DS sweats. LOL

Well, you could always buy the one with Elmo on it (from Target or Walmart - I think I saw it at one of those anyway) and put a Mickey or other Disney character applique on top of it maybe...

I don't know if the Elmo applique is stitched on or glued on but either way it should be able to be removed and something else placed there.

OR -- you could even design your own if you know how to sew! I bet it would be pretty easy - and a LOT less expensive than the backpack style ones. You could make it fasten in the front or back that way - whatever would work best for your child. :)

I agree. While that sounds like a terrible thing to happen to a child it is clearly the adults fault for allowing the strap to be loose. Its very easy to blame the equipment when, as with anything, you have to take due care and have a bit of common sense.

We don't use harnesses on the kids but they are certainly cute!:goodvibes

Now I wonder if one of those will fit my dh.......:scratchin;)

I love the harnesses I have for my girls. They arent disney though they are a dog and a pig. They don't mind wearing them and I don't care if I get looks from people. As for that child hurt by one that is totally the parents fault and I wouldnt blame it on the harness.

I just bought the Mickey Mouse harness for my daughter (who will be 19 months when we go to Disney) at Wal-Mart for $20!!!!

I was sooooooo excited to see it there because we had been talking about getting one for our trip. They also have Winnie the Pooh for the same price! Now if I could just find a double stroller swap we would be all set....
