Curse You DVC add on enablers!

200 points was supposed to be enough. But on my VERY first DVC owner trip I decided to stay at BWV in a 1BR garden view. I ended up renting 30 pts to complete a split stay for the trip!
The solution everyone seems to have for this is MORE POINTS!
The experience has me looking at 50 pt add on contracts!

I can be strong. I can wait a few years and see if this is an anomaly that makes ocassional point rental fine, or a shortsightness that requires an add on...
But reading this forum makes me look at contracts...

Disclaimer: I don't consider myself an enabler...

How much are OTU points from Disney nowadays? $20/pt? More? If you rented 30 points, that's $600. Let's say you do it a few more years (3?) that's just about $2,000 after tax. A 50 point BWV contract would be about $6,000 right now. So you'd have to rent that same amount for nearly a decade before it makes sense to buy a small BWV add on. So I would recommend against it.

That being said, there's some Hilton head contracts for about half the price. Which would mean you'd break even in about 5 years. And if you're renting for say 3 years...you're nearly at breakeven. If that's the case, you should definitely buy a small 50 point Hilton head contract especially considering you could still sell it after. Let's say you can sell it for 20% less than what you bought it for, in that case you'd only need to use it twice before you breakeven! So if you look at it that way, I would recommend a small Hilton head contract.

But just recognize that you'd lose the ability to book a BWV at 11 month, and that just wouldn't make sense to buy a small contract but not be able to use it with your big contract. I mean it's a small contract anyway, so you really should just buy a small BWV contract instead of a small HH contract. Plus, have you seen the way the dues are climbing on HH?? It just makes sense to go straight to the BWV contract. You own the contract for a while, I'm sure you'll breakeven.

Now that we got that out of the way..have you seen the 2 bedrooms at BWV?

You also need to consider the maintenance fees. Boardwalk is a little under $8/pt while Hilton Head is just a few pennies shy of $10. That's half of the cost of OTU points.

The only negative of OTU points is that they can only be purchased at the 7 month window and is limited to 24(?) points per use year.

I've been going the point transfer route which has worked out pretty good. The only time I got in a bind was this year. Took a transfer in Jan for a trip to Aulani in Oct. Had a feeling back in March things were going to be bad and banked the points. Points are good until Jan 2022 now. Instead of Aulani, planning on Boardwalk (possibly BLT if I can change at 7 months) in Jan 2022 since we are not comfortable flying yet.

Just my 0.02.
