Just a quick update on the current trip.

The original plan was a night in the Animal Kingdom, followed by a move to the Beach Club for the week, and finally Vero Beach for 5 nights and Hilton Head for 2 nights. That was all about to change.

Before we departed, we found out that we will have to spend some time overseas for my company. This would require me returning a day early from the trip, cutting 1 day off of Hilton Head. We arrived in Orlando a day early due to an earlier than anticipated departure time from home. Now the tough decision – stay onsite for the first night or offsite. In our goal to stay at every WDW Disney Hotel, we decided on the All-Stars Movie.

What I am posting here is an honest opinion on the resort. It is very nice, well themed, but our experience with the staff was just not great. The lady at the check-in desk never smiled, and in fact made it almost seem that we were an inconvenience to Disney by staying just one night. We asked about using our DVC or Annual passes to get a discount, and were told in a very cold manner that they do not do this at the desk, go use a phone and call central reservations and come back later. I opted to forgo the discount to get into a room, as I was feeling a little exhausted and under the weather. The room they gave us was a handicapped room. The lady at the check-in desk conveniently did not mention this even though she knew we had a 2.5 year old with us, who generally require bathtubs. Fortunately DS took to the shower quite well. Interestingly, the rooms also do not have hair dryers. Even the cheapest basic hotel/motel rooms have hair dryers these days. We had dinner at the food court. DW had to wait over 20 minutes for her food. DS and myself were finished when she showed up. The lady at the checkout never cracked a smile. In fact, it was not until the morning that I finally saw a cast member smiling – one of the housecleaning staff.

Arrival at AK was exact opposite. We were greeted when we drove up by very friendly staff, welcomed, and looked after from start to finish (current at least). They even went so far as to upgrade our room to a safari view because they did not have a room with a king size bed, even though they did not have to do this. There was a minor problem with our room, the previous guests were still in it, but this was resolved quickly and efficiently – and with a smile. Boma was great – again the staff was all smiles. The server even went so far as to go to a restaurant next door to get a small spoon for DS because their spoons were too big.

I think that in two nights here, we have seen both sides of Disney. While I don’t expect much for the value resorts, after all they are value – I would expect at least something comparable to the local Ramada, and preferably with a smile.

I will try to post further updates as the trip moves along.

G ~ are you posting FROM WDW? COOL! Have a great trip! Keep us posted! What's the weather like? S

Hi Glenn,

Sorry to hear about your experience at the AS...not a great way to start your trip. I'm sure the rest will be great & I can't wait to read your updates as it goes along.

I hope meeting three sombre CMs at ASM was just a fluke, Glenn.

AKL sounds great, I'd love to stay there someday. I've eaten at Bomas and really enjoyed it! Our sever there was very friendly and helpful too!

Hope we hear from you again! :) :)

Glenn - hope your stay continues on the upbeat! I'm really interested to hear what your 2.5 yr old DS likes on this trip. In two weeks we'll be down there with our almost 3 yr old DS for his first visit (and also 6 yr old DD's second trip). How's the heat and humidity!! Have a super time!
PS. the dollar is over 64 cents!!!!!;)

Hi Glenn, so neat to hear from you while at WDW! We have stayed at AKL, too and LOVED it! Boma's is perhaps my favourite restaurant at Disney. I love taste-testing all the interesting foods. There are so many interesting smells and textures at AKL you feel as if you really could be in Africa.

We have stayed at ASMu a few times now and while it certainly doesn't compare to a deluxe resort, we have enjoyed our stays there and haven't (so far) encountered any problems with the staff or in the food court. I'm sorry that your stay at ASMo was a disappointment and left you with a bad impression. I was just reading on the resort board about a family's bad experiences at the Grand Floridian. Sort of makes you wonder what is going on behind the scenes, doesn't it!

Drop by again and let us know how your trip is going! :D

Woke up this morning with Giraffes outside of the window. They have these neat invisible fences that keep the animals away from the building. You have to look really close to see them, as they look just like bushes. The crane had other ideas though. He saw the grass on the other side and simply flew over the fence.

The weather here has been hot and very humid so far. They are calling for rain for Tuesday and Wednesday, but we will deal with that problem when the time arrives.

The start of the day was slow. We packed our bags and had the AKL send them to the BC for us. We then drove to the BC, checked in, room was not ready, so we left to do the World Showcase. We kept DS interested by giving him pennies to drop into all of the fountains he found along the way. The story of the trip for him thus far has been animals and transportation. Every time he sees a boat or train he wants to ride it. We actually took the monorail to the TTC and back just so he could rise it. We asked to ride up front on the way to the TTC, and they accommodated our request. DS was thrilled with this. We had lunch at Tepaniaki (SP?) in Japan. As usual – food was great. I would highly recommend this restaurant, especially the squid appetizer. They cook it in such a way that it is very tender, and does not have the rubbery texture that most calamari is known for.

Other than that, the day was pretty relaxing. The Beach Club has been great. Much more crowded than when I was last at this resort in 1993, but I expected that. With the additions of Boardwalk across the lake, and the villas here at BC, there are now many more people around. It does not seem to bother me as much as I thought it would though. The Beach Club Villas are simply astounding. Besides, if they had not added the Villas, we probably would not have stayed here again, as we would not be able to use out DVC points. The service here is first class Disney all the way. We did have a few mix-ups caused by DW’s maiden name being on the reservation, and me using my surname to valet the car, and check luggage etc. Things usually got sorted out though. Tomorrow is MGM, and relaxation around the pool. Forgot to mention – I took 2 floats out of DS’s swimsuit – just enough to make him sink if he did not continuously kick and swim. He adjusted very well. He is like a fish in water. The problem is convincing him to get out. I figure I will keep eliminating the floats until eventually he can swim on his own.

That is all for now. Tomorrow is another day and more excitement waits. It is fun seeing all of this through a 2 year olds eyes. He tends to see very different things than he did last year, and different from what we adults notice.

Glad to hear things are better now. We went over to the BC when we were there in July and also found it much busier than the previos year when we stayed there...but it is a beautiful resort just the same. Enjoy your vacation and keep writing :D .

Have fun at MGM ~ with a 2 year old, you'll enjoy Bear in the Big Blue House, Stanley, Pooh and Friends! It's Tough to be a Bug Play area is way cool with a 2 year old! If your 2 year old is like my two year old the Parade will be a HUGE hit! S

Today brought many new joys to the face of a 2 year old. We visited MGM where DS saw Playhouse Disney, and one of his favorites Bear in the Big Blue House. We also saw the Little Mermaid, however, he was very afraid of the villain scene, and we had to leave. He kept repeating all day – Octopus bad, Octopus very bad. He did meet with one of his favorites – Pooh Bear after the mermaid show, which cheered him up considerably. Did not get to the parades today. ½ day is about DS’s limit before returning for a nap. The things he enjoyed the most – Bear, feeding the ducks, and swimming. We tried to remove another float, but he sunk like a stone. Too soon for that. He was a trooper though, and wanted to try again without it. That time will come soon enough.

The weather seemed cooler today than previous days. The sun was shaded by the clouds somewhat, either that or I finally started having sense enough to wear my hat.

MK and more trains are up next!

More tomorrow!
