As many of you are aware, the Vermont Legislature passed legistlation allowing Gay Couples to marry.

As expected the Vermont Governor vetoed the bill.

Reports are coming in this morning that the legislature has OVERTURNED the veto!

This makes Vermont the first state to legalize gay marriage through the legislative process rather than judicial mandate!

Go Vermont!

The veto was overturned by a ONE vote margin. We had driven down to Boston yesterday when we heard the breaking news

I heard this on the news too.

I was flipping through the radio stations in the car after and caught a portion of a heavy duty religious broadcast. All I'm going to say is the guy was frothing at the mouth with regard to same gendered marriage. As we win one we need to be ready for the backlash.

I hope California overturns prop 8. If they don't what would be the next step? Legislative like Vermont? I am so flipping ignorant on individual state civics.

I agree, I wish NY would hurry it up already. I very much want to see my best friend get married (legally with all the rights) one of these days

I actually asked my friend your question earlier this week. He sent me a long email, which I appear to have deleted. It seems it is laregly due to the fact that once the legislature passes it NY there is almost no way for it to be over turned or vetoed (a good thing, right?). I guess that makes some of the representitives less likely to vote for it because they know it will stick and they don't want to overly upset conservative constituents I really don't understand why that changes their vote, but I never have pretended to understand politics in general.

well i for one did not think it would get past the over ride vote but then again i never thought the civil union bill would pass either. just goes to show that people can do the right thing. moments like that make me proud of where i am from. oh well back to work.

ps while i have come to this site for quite some time this is the first time i have ever posted. thanks to all for your comments on this and disney vacation planning. if i have a question i just come and look around i always get the answers to my questions. thank you!
