Do/did you have renters insurance?

We didnt for the first couple of years. Young and invinsible I suppose. We quickly figured it out though and while we never had to use it it sure made me feel better knowing we had it!

This week a local apartment complex caught fire and most everyone lost everything. On the news only THREE families in that whole building had insurance.

I know in many cases its under $20 a month. I just think its so important.

Do/did you have it?

We had it when we rented. For us it was a given. I am really suprised how many people I come across that don't have it. I really think more people don't have it then do.

I do...I'd never be able to replace anything otherwise.

I've got a lot of my rare music stuff in a fire safe, too, although I hear that may not work.

Yes, we always had it. It is VERY inexpensive, I think we paid less then $100/year. Well worth it considering a lot of people that rent aren't in the financial situation to replace EVERYTHING they own.

For the five years I was a renter, I did not have it. At the time I didn't own anything I thought to be valuable...all my furniture was from Amvets. I didn't have expensive electronics...etc...Although if I ever had a fire, I would probably realize how wrong that thinking was.

We have always had it! I think we pay about $300 a year with $100 deductible and 110K coverage, plus our computer riders.

I absolutely have it and would recommend that every renter have a policy. It is very inexpensive and while my landlord has a policy to cover the house, it does not cover any of my personal items. Back in June, part of our ceiling caved in because of all the rain. Thankfully, and miraculously, nothing of ours was damaged. But I was relieved to know that we had the policy in place at the time.

My wedding and engagement rings are also covered under the policy and I'm still paying less than $20 per month. In fact, I think I pay less than $15 per month.

yep, we have it - about $200 a year. But this is only the second year we've had it b/c we were stupid. Although haven't had to use it, it does make me less worried about things.

yeah, I know what you mean about not having much. But think clothes, appliances, all of these things cost money and would be a bundle to have to replace all at once!

We never had much when we rented either but we figured baby stuff alone would put us in the poor house if we had to replace it.

I know now that we own a house, and have for several years, its a no brainer but I even know of people who own their house outright that have no insurance. I cant imagine what you'd do!

I used to sell insurance. In a lot of companies if you purchase renters insurance with the same company you insure your autos with you can recieve a home/auto discount. When we sold the renters insurance many time the cost of the insurance was offset by the discount you recieve on your automobiles. Definately worth checking into. :thumbsup2

At my last job I won a plasma tv. We knew that if our apartment were ever broken into or if there was a fire we could never replace it. When we found out it was only going to cost $13 a month to cover everything and more I wondered why I hadn't started it sooner. Each year since we have increased the amount of coverage a little more. I think we now pay $17 a month and I feel it's money well spent.

When I was super poor, I didn't have it.

We have it now though. It is really SOOOOO cheap! Much less then you'd think. We have a lot of electronics and stuff. It would be so expensive if we needed to replace it.

We have it as DH rents a place in NJ because it's cheaper than an extended stay hotel and he spends a good portion of his month up there.

I think we've got $30K in coverage (the minimum they will write) and it's about $150 a year and includes liability.

All he's got up there really are his clothes, a bedroom set, 19" TV, and a few other things, but replacing his work suits would cost a lot of $$$, so it's worth it.

Our landlords actually made it a requirement in our lease that we have renter's insurance, although we were definitely planning on getting it anyway. We paid $120 a year, and the peace of mind was well worth it to me.

Now we own, but I couldn't imagine not having insurance. You never know what could happen.

We did not have it the first year or so we rented, but we finally smartened up and figured out we would be in a world of hurt if anything happened. Once we called USAA and found out it was only like $15 a month we were amazed.

Nothing ever happened and so we never needed to use it. We went back to the home we rented in Georgia about a year ago and a tree had fallen through the roof and part of the garage had collapsed in a big storm. Sure hope the current renter had insurance as there had to be considerable damage not only to the house, but to whatever had been in there.

i have it-would'nt go without it. allot of people passing thinking they don't have much they could'nt replace-but the same people will keep valuable property in their auto, which in the event of theft is not covered under their auto insurance but IS under renters. our policy also has a provision for temporary lodging in the event of a fire, flood-other habitability issues.

we had always carried but it realy hit us how valuable it was when a friend's apartment was damaged due to a fire in the upper unit. his unit went pretty unscathed but it was deemed structuraly unsound. he had just paid his rent, the landlord said they had to wait for the report, talk to their carrier...he had to scramble to find a place to stay with no money.

:rotfl2: Wow, I can tell none of you live in Miami. I have $36,000 in content coverage and pay $482.04 a year.........it's an expense I have to have due to the hurricanes......but, it's certainly no cheap by any means. I won't even go into what homeowner's insurance is on a home here.

We have it....we didn't when we were robbed....figured out that it cost us nothing through our insurance because of the percent we get off by doing both car and renters. It's also a requirement at the storage unit...where it's overinflated from them if you don't have it.

I think I need to get this. My Dbf & I have been renting for over a year at our current apt and don't have renters insurance. Now I'm getting worried. :listen:
I think I'll look into getting some. If I can pay to go to WDW, I can pay for renters insurance. :teeth:
